Schrock faces accusations: CANCELS CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGN

Before we move on to the next member of Congress and highly placed officials in the Bush Administration, here's the news on outed by blogACTIVE.com Congressman Schrock. Ed Schrock in a stunning turnaround has announced he will no longer be a candidate for his House Seat in November. "The time has come for these gay homophobes to step up or be outed...Schrock is the first...more will follow."

Remember when a candidate for Congress said he supported eliminating don't ask don't tell so the military could again question recruits about gay experiences?! Well, if you thought it was Ed Schrock who said it, you'd be right!
From the Virginian-Pilot, October 22, 2000: Schrock favors ending the Clinton administration's ''don't ask, don't tell'' policy on gays in the military. He supports asking enlistees whether they have had homosexual experiences in an effort to to try to keep gays from serving. ''You're in the showers with them, you're in the bunk room with them, you're in staterooms with them,'' Schrock said.
Listen to the audio tape... Seems to me that Ed Schrock had no problem serving his country and sharing showers with Navy men for 24 years!

Today's AP Breaking story said, "The [press] release said he would not comment further on his decision, nor did he comment specifically on the allegations." blogACTIVE.com readers know better...Schrock was leading a double life and now we can release the audio file of Congressman Schrock seeking gay sex off of gay sex lines.

ACTION: Use Ed Koch's work email and ask "Why is NY's former mayor, a gay man, speaking at the RNC?"

Of course, it's no surprise that Ed Koch is gay. Everyone in NY seems to know it and it was confirmed for me in 1996 by Ed's former lover, the late Richard Nathan. At the time, Richard was on the Board of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and I was the Development Director. When I called Ed a few weeks ago even he refused to deny that he was gay. He was, however, excited that someone "would be interested in the sex life of an 80 year old." As soon as I mentioned Richard Nathan, there was a marked change in Ed's voice and at that point he decided that the rest of the call would be off the record. Oh, poor stupid Ed...another queer who thinks being gay is just about who you sleep with. Unfortunately, as we know, being gay is also about sustaining attacks from the pResident and his party.

I was raised in the New York City area and remember when Ed was a reformer who refused to move into the NY Mayor's residence, Gracie Mansion, opting instead for his one room apartment in Greenwich Village. Oh, poor Ed, he seems to have lost his way. And now, a gay man Ed Koch, is supporting G. W. Bush and the most homophobic platform in American history.

YOU, blogACTIVE.com readers, can click here and write to Ed Koch at his office email address and ask him to stand up against the hate and homophobia being spewed forth at Madison Square Garden!
Ed Koch...you are a gay man...do not abandon your community!

A comment on Outing...and locked up TIGHT!

Greetings. As regular visitors know, blogACTIVE.com has had a pretty busy 5 days. It's simply amazing how traffic goes up when you do something as simple as exposing the secret gay life of a United States Congressman. If you read the comments on the post, you would know that everyone wants to see the proof...and now.

In anticipation of future developments, blogACTIVE.com is TEMPORARILY shutting off comments for the Schrock posting. NO Comments have been deleted. These comments will be available at the site within the next few days.

In the meantime, I read a wonderfulkpost over at about.com on the topic of outing. Here's my favorite part:
If an important member of PETA, actively involved in popular efforts to ban the sale of meat, was known to grab a Big Mac a couple of times a week, would it be wrong to publicize that fact? I don't think so. By making a political issue out of what others eat, they are no longer entitled to the same privacy about what they eat. By politicizing the issue, their real beliefs about it become a matter of public interests
I couldn't agree more. And that is exactly what this is about!

I welcome your comments regarding this item, which can be read in its entirety at: About.com

When commenting, please remember to not disucss the Schrock posting. The comments for that posting will be reopened shortly.

ACTION: Write Congressman Ed Schrock and ask how he can cruise for gay men and then co-sponsor the Federal Marriage Amendment

When the story of Congressman Ed Schrock (R-VA-2) first came to me, I was quite skeptical. After all, Congressman Schrock's district includes parts of Hampton and Norfolk and all of Virginia Beach, home to no less than NINE military facilities and Pat Robertson’s Regent University! Nevertheless, the activities of Congressman Schrock have been documented and verified as thoroughly as any I have seen come before me and what I have learned is, well, ScHrOCKING!

Congressman Ed Schrock has made a habit of rendezvousing with gay men via the MegaMates/ MegaPhone Line, an interactive telephone service on which men place ads and respond to those ads to meet each other. What makes this story more amazing? Congressman Schrock not only voted for the homophobic Marriage Protection Act, but he also signed on as a CO-SPONSOR of the Federal Marriage Amendment!

Ed Schrock has a voting record that the most right wing conservative would be proud of. The Christian Coalition gave him a 92% rating in their 2003 voting guide.

Schrock's voting record at the Christian Coalition: 92%

His score over at the Human Rights Campaign? ZERO!

Schrock's voting record at the Human Rights Campaign: 0%!

ACTION: They MUST be kidding at Concerned Women for America! Write or Call Lee LaHaye today!

+ = Lee LaHaye's Hoover Award!

Click here to write a note to Hoover Award winner:
Lee LaHaye, CFO, Concerned Women For America

I'm no fan of soon to be former NJ Gov. James McGreevey. When I first heard the rumors that he was gay and that he supported the Federal Marriage Amendment, I began to track down the story to expose his hypocrisy. Well, Golan Cipel and his attorneys beat me to the scoop and McGreevey made the political calculation that it was more noble to say he was gay than to say he was corrupt. (People will debate whether or not that's progress for the gay rights movement and I'll leave that analysis up to someone else. What is far more interesting to me is to see how one organization played with this issue.)

While the Human Rights Campaign made the biggest "non statement" of the entire story, the Concerned Women for America found it necessary to post a story on its site that slams the "largest homosexual rights organization in America." A surprise? No and Yes. (Does that make me a flip-flopper?)

"No" - How could I be surprised when the author of the article is David Thibault, managing editor of Cybercast News Service. Founded in 1998 to counter the "liberal bias" of the news, Cybercast News is one of the most right leaning news sources on the web. They are about as "fair and balanced" as Fox News!

"Yes" - Considering that the Chief Financial Officer of Concerned Women for America, Lee LaHaye is himself an openly gay man, you have to wonder why they continue to bash gays. How bad can gays be if CWA trusts its $12 MILLION 2003 budget to Lee? Oh, If Lee's name sounds familiar, it's because Lee is the son of Beverly and Tim LaHaye, two of the most noted anti-gay characters in the country.

I wasn't quite sure how to recognize the extraordinary achievements of Lee and his gang over at CWA, A Roy Cohn Award just didn't seem like enough. That's when I remembered I had a picture of J. Edgar Hoover's grave at Congressional Cemetery in DC. The picture was taken during the 1993 March on Washington -- The dress, purse and triangles were there long before the days of Photoshop -- aside from the photo credit and website, the picture is exactly as I saw it.

So, without further delay, blogACTIVE presents the J. Edgar Hoover Award to Lee LaHaye of Concerned Women for America for simultaneously working to destroy the progress of gay and lesbian Americans while living an openly gay life.

Please be sure to click here to write a note to Lee LaHaye (copies will be automatically sent to CWA's media director, Rebecca Riggs, CWA's in-house hatemonger, Robert Knight, and to blogACTIVE.com.)

ACTION: With friends like Lee Cohen, who needs enemies? Tell Melissa Hart and Bill Frist that Lee Cohen does NOT represent you at the table!

One of the most common arguments against exposing these modern day Roy Cohns is that it's important to have people working from within the system (in both parties) to represent gay and lesbian voices. I couldn't agree more -- there are many gays and lesbians doing good work in political offices, Democrat and Republican, all over the country -- and you won't see them listed here!

The other day, however, while I was rereading the New York Times article, it dawned on me that the people we list here sound a lot more like their bosses than they do typical representatives of gay and lesbian America. Here's an example of this from the Times piece:
A gay press secretary for a House Republican who refused to be named because his boss asked him not to speak publicly on the marriage debate said ... ''It put it into focus,'' said the aide, whose name and telephone number have been posted on Mr. Rogers's Web site. ''If there is a spectrum of things that make up who I am, the things that draw me to work for Republicans are more important that anything related to my sexual orientation.'' (emphasis added)
So, just who is this unidentified source? Lee Cohen of Rep. Melissa Hart's office, that's who! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that Lee Cohen is the ONLY press secretary on the site with an office number listed! Not very anonymous after all.

Now, if you're like me, the quote above (especially the last part) is pretty unreal. Is Mr. Cohen one of the "insiders" gay and lesbian Americans are counting on to represent us at the table? I hope not! My concerns are heightened by the fact that the Melissa Hart is Co-chair of the RNC Platform Committee.

If you're like me, you'll want to hop over to the RNC Platform Portal to enter what YOU think should be in (and OUT) of the RNC 2004 Platform. After you send your note to the committee, make sure you also drop a line to lettercopy@blogACTIVE.com...I'll make sure I post excerpts of the best ones here. Of course, if you're like Lee Cohen and you believe that lesbian and gay equality is LESS important than ANYTHING the Republicans stand for as a party, click here.

While you're at the RNC Platform site...be sure to mention the Employment Non Discrimination Act...after all, the GOP is the party stopping this important legislation from being voted upon.

ACTION: Congratulate Bill Frist and Linus Catignani on Linus' Roy Cohn Award

When does the insanity end? That's right folks! One of the big fundraisers for SENATE MAJORITY LEADER BILL FRIST is a Roy Cohn Award Winner. Openly gay man Linus Catignani is a partner of Catignani & Bond, First's fundraising consulting firm. (Linus' partner is Linda Bond, wife of Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) another strong supporter of the Federal Marriage Amendment.) What does Linus' boss Bill Frist have to say about lesbian and gay equality? The Tennessee Senator was quick to tell the Massachusetts legislature what to do when the courts upheld our equality. You can read Frist's statement here. Sen. Frist also made it a point to speak out against equality during the debate on the Federal Marriage Amendment. And while Sen. Frist is going to be busy crafting the Republican's anti gay platform planks during the convention, Linus' firm will be filling the coffers of Frist's Political Action Committee: VOLPAC! Of course, the first purpose listed at the VOLPAC site is: "To assist Senator Bill Frist as he works to advance his goals in the U.S. Senate."

I've tried to chat with Linus about this. While I was able to reach his partner, Doug at their home in Tennessee, I have had much less luck with Linus. I wonder what Doug thinks of Linus' work for the Senator?

More important, what do YOU think of Linus' work for Sen. Bill Frist and VOLPAC? Click here to write a note to Linus about your feelings. A copy will be sent to Senator Frist's press secretary, Linus' partner Linda Bond, and, of course, to blogACTIVE.com.

ACTION: George Allen: Virginia Needs YOU! (to open a gay bar)

MEMO TO:
John Reid, Communications Director, Office of Senator George Allen
Paul Unger, Counsel and Legislative Director, Office of Senator George Allen

With all the juggling Senator Allen must do -- on one hand having so many gay friends and on the other being so homophobic -- I hope you will encourage the Senator to explore a job with less pressure in his post-Senate career. I have a great idea: Open a gay bar!

Plenty of homophobes have owned gay bars, so don’t let that stop him…and after bashing gay people in the Senate, the least he could do is offer them a fun, safe place for his staff to have a drink, no? Often called the “gayest place on Capitol Hill,” your office would be the perfect place to recruit prospective staff for the Senator’s new venture.
John Reid: As the Senator’s communications director, you would bring some real Virginia celebrity to the new club. A former news personality from Richmond would be the perfect marketing manager for a bar. You, John, know what to say, how to spin the truth, and who to say it to. Just look at the Washington Blade from three months ago, when you told your fellow gay community members that Senator Allen “would only support a constitutional amendment if it becomes absolutely necessary. Right now, Allen believes DOMA “has already resolved this issue.” I’m sure you can come up with some politically acceptable statement for this unbelievable flip-flop against the gay community. I do hope my readers will write you with some ideas of their own as to how you might handle the challenge. I suspect that having a dad who is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates who voted for the most homophobic law in American History has prepared you for taking on those who will oppose the opening of another gay bar in VA.

Paul Unger: As the Senator’s Counsel and Legislative Director, you have a ton of experience that could benefit a gay bar. Paul, you know more about gay people than perhaps anyone else on the hill. After all, you were able to master the talent of simultaneously living an out gay life, while also working for one the nation’s most notorious anti-gay Senators: Conrad Burns (MT). Paul, keeping secrets is important if you are going to work at Senator Allen’s new club…this is where your experience working for Senator Gordon Smith (OR) will come in very handy. Despite a very moving Senate floor speech on teen suicide, Senator Smith was able to keep secret from the American people that an overwhelmingly disproportionate number of teen suicides in the United States are gay and lesbian teens…This conspiracy of silence is nothing new of course -- it was the Secretary of HHS under the president's Bush's father who disavowed the department from a report on the very topic. A report which concluded gay and lesbian teen suicide comprises up to 30 percent of completed youth suicides annually and that suicide is the leading cause of death among gay male, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual youth.

John and Paul, with all the gay men working for you in your Senate office and over at the National Republican Senatorial Committee -- remember Jay Timmons? - he was the first recipientof the Roy Cohn Award -- you should have no problem in filling the club up every night. And with the number of gay men working for homophobes on the Hill, you’re guaranteed to find a steady stream of clientele turning to alcohol to bury their shame in your boss' new bar.

ACTION: Roy Cohn Award Winner: Call Trent Lott and say "Thanks for having a gay money man!!"

If you're not familiar with Sen. Trent Lott's view of gay people take a moment to read this story from when the former Majority Leader appeared as a guest on the Armstrong Williams radio show. On the air Armstrong Williams asked Lott if he thought being gay was a sin and Lott responded:
"Yes, it is... in America right now there's an element that wants to make that alternative lifestyle acceptable. You still love that person and you should not try to mistreat them or treat them as outcasts. You should try to show them a way to deal with that problem, just like alcohol ... others have a sex addiction or are kleptomaniacs. There are all kinds of problems and addictions and difficulties and experiences of this kind that are wrong. But you should try to work with that person to learn to control that problem."
Well, get this...even though he thinks gay people are sinners and mentally ill, he has no problem trusting the financial management of his political action committee, The New Republican Majority Fund, to an openly gay man, DIRK SMITH. Today, blogACTIVE.com awards this week's ROY COHN award to Dirk for outstanding work AGAINST the gay and lesbian community.

Who would have thought that a gay man would work for one of the nation's biggest homophobes? Trust, me...there's plenty more on the way and now that it's no longer convention week, you'll see them coming up at a faster clip.

So, readers, two actions you can take:
First, call Trent Lott at 202-224-6253 and thank him for hiring Dirk, despite the fact that he has accused him of being a sinner and a persona afflicted with a kleptomaniac like illness.
Second, Call Dirk at 703-299-6600 and let him know how you feel about gay men working for Trent Lott.
Of course, please drop a note to us at blogACTIVE.com to let us know about the calls.
