We're live....A new site I'm proud to be a part of!

RawStory, the flagship site of Raw Story Media, Inc.

rawstoryQ.com: Out news with an attitude

Great News.....Thanks for the notes of support from those of you who saw the item about rawstoryQ.com in last week's blogACTIVE.confidential. The site is live...here's the formal announcement of its debut. - Mike. Here's the press release:
Raw Story Media, publisher of RawStory.com and BlueLemur.com, is proud to announce the first of its community-oriented web portals, rawstoryQ.com, a site for gay and lesbian news. "We are pleased about this exciting opportunity to expand Raw Story," said John Byrne, Raw Story's publisher.

rawstoryQ.com is a cutting-edge site providing the links and exclusive news stories to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. "Out news with an attitude," rawstoryQ will be edited and co-published by Michael Rogers, publisher of blogACTIVE.com, one of the most popular and controversial blogs in the gay community.

"Partnering with Raw Story on behalf of the lesbian and gay community is a natural match," said rawstoryQ editor Rogers, "The entire team at Raw Story Media is top-notch and make up exactly the kind of company I enjoy working with - cutting-edge and forward-thinking. I cannot think of a better media outlet to work with."

In just a handful of days online, rawstoryQ.com has already been cited by Sirius Radio host Michelangelo Signorile as a must visit site. "Gay news - with some bite," Signorile remarked.

L.A. Weekly veteran Doug Ireland said, "You should bookmark it now."

rawstoryQ.com will also provide work by author Wayne Besen and popular blogger Pam Spaulding of Pam's House Blend. Sections of the site will be dedicated to lesbian and gay organization news (national, statewide and local) and to actions, with direct links to web-based actions of interest to the community.

Additional sites under development

As part of a long-term effort to provide resources for emerging online communities, Raw Story Media will be announcing a number of other sites. A document storage and display site for bloggers, and a site designed to provide news information for those interested in the environment, will be the next sites to be debut.

About the founders of rawstoryQ.com

Raw Story Media chairman John Byrne graduated from Oberlin College in 2003. He has worked as a reporter for the Boston Globe, and his articles have also appeared in the Sacramento, Fresno and Modesto Bees, the Raleigh News & Observer and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The stories he"s broken on Raw Story have been cited by the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Guardian, the New York Post, The Nation, the Toronto Star, the L.A. Weekly, Roll Call, the Hill, and myriad other newspapers.

Old style colonial politics alive and well in DC

Today's Washington Blade reports on the proposal by Representative Jo Ann Davis (R-VA) to pass a law defining marriage in Washington, DC as between a man and a woman.

Apparently, it's not enough that Jo Ann represents the same state that had a census director who claimed to me more efficient at racial categorization than Adolf himself, she feels the need to throw her pathetic hateful ways on the residents of DC.

It's easy, I imagine. You see, like any other colony, DC has no voting representation in Congress. Hey Jo Ann, is it that you like picking on local governments? How does this square with your party's "local control" mantra?

(Confidential to 'Peninsula Voice': I've received another tip similar to yours about the alleged activities in Rep. Davis' district. Please contact me at the number I mailed you back at the number I emailed you. -Mike)

ATTENTION blogACTIVE.com READERS

Over the next few days there will be a number of events happening in Washington, DC. Ken Mehlman, outed on Air America Radio and numerous other news outlets, will be running for Chairman of the Republican National Committee.

After the election over at the RNC, (I wonder if it will be contested....) the sitting President will spend $40 million to take an oath he has already taken and residents of DC will need to find $12 million to pay for it.

blogACTIVE.com is seeking a small core group of individuals to engage in some very exciting work over the next 7 days. Those who participate should have had some contact with blogACTIVE.com over the past few months via email or phone. I am sure all understand why it is important to make sure that no "infiltrating" get in on this project. Here are some important details on the project:

1. Participants will be able to do this work from home/work on a computer
2. The work is self timed...commitments can be as short as from 30 minutes and for as long as you want
3. ALL ELEMENTS ARE 100% LEGAL. NO ONE WILL BE ASKED TO BREAK ANY LAWS!

If you are interested in being part of something fun that will make some real hay in Washington, drop our actions volunteer a note. Please include a phone number and the best time to reach you. The purpose of the phone call, if necessary, will be to verify your participation and the seriousness of notes received.

Must See Site

I'm pushing a new site everywhere today...because it's important! Please take a moment to visit Practicewhatyoupreach.org, a Texas activist site. It's been established to fight against the state's move to amend the constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Practicewhatyoupreach.org mentioned blogACTIVE in their recent press release about the site:
“PracticeWhatYouPreach.org is EXACTLY what our country needs to reach new constituencies through the Internet,” said Mike Rogers, editor of RawStoryQ and publisher of BlogActive.

Arguing that marriage is not a wedge issue, Practice What You Preach is a group of mainstream Texans opposing a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage as a hypocritical diversion of attention from the clear and present dangers to marriage—the twin epidemics of divorce and domestic violence.

“Jason Stanford is an example of how this medium is supposed to work,” continued Rogers.

Jason Stanford, a married father of two little Texans, is a national Democratic campaign consultant who started Practice What You Preach not because it was a paying client but because he thought it needed to be done.

“If anyone is looking for a good fight against hypocrisy, you are more than welcome at Practice What You Preach,” said Stanford.
Please visit the site today. If you like the site, I hope you'll consider supporting the team over there on the contributions page.

TAKE ACTION: House Republicans Line Up Behind Gay Rules Chairman Rep. David Dreier

Great News! ROY COHN AWARD WINNER DAVID DREIER IN POSITION TO DEFEAT MARRIAGE AMENDMENT...AGAIN!

In case you forgot, here's the award blogACTIVE.com gave to gay Rep. David Dreier (R-CA).

Original Roy Cohn Award presented to
Gay Rep. David Dreier (R-CA)
(click on image or here for full size)

Now, it's reported that Republican leadership of the House is standing behind Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-CA). Of course, it shows what a load of garbage their Contract on America is. One of the reforms, terms limits for committee chairman, is tossed aside for the convenience of the leadership.
Normally, Dreier, R-Glendora, would have been forced to step down this year, but House Speaker Dennis Hastert exercised his authority to keep Dreier on for another term.

"He is pleased and proud to serve the Speaker and the Congress as Chairman of the Rules Committee," said a spokeswoman for his office.
(I'll tell you...it's not the first time that I've heard David Dreier likes to please powerful men...but I digress)

Much more important, this appointment, in direct conflict to the term limit rule is a clear signal that the House leadership considers the Federal Marriage Amendment D.O.A. this Congress. According to one friend of mine on the hill, "...[T]hey have appointed an anti-Federal Marriage Amendment, Gay Republican to head the very committee that manages constitutional amendments. If this appointment isn't a slap in the face of the pro-FMA forces, they are not paying attention."

TAKE ACTION

Please help blogACTIVE congratulate gay Congressman David Dreier on his reappointment as Rules Committee Chairman. Click here to send an email to David's Chief of Staff, Brad Smith. Copies of your letter will be sent to leaders of the radical right. (If you don't remember who Brad is, you should read the story about David and Brad here.)

PLEASE.....

1. Congratulate Rep. David Dreier on his appointment as the first known gay man to be appointed to a leadership post by the Republican leadership.

2. Mention how much you are counting on Rep. Dreier, as a like minded opponent of the Federal Marriage Amendment, to make sure that the House does NOT get the required super majority for passage.

3. Since a copy of your letter will be going to leaders of the radical right, you might want to suggest to them that they direct resources to a battle other than the Federal Marriage Amendment. After all, with a gay opponent of the Federal Marriage Amendment in charge of the Rules Committee, trying to pass the amendment is clearly a huge waste of time.

Help blogACTIVE.com put an end to the waste of time in debating the Federal Marriage Amendment...click here and send these folks a message today! (As always, a copy will be sent to the lettercopy@blogactive.com file.)

UPDATE: Staples is Nailed!

THE LATEST...WAIT A MINUTE SAYS MEDIA MATTERS:...

The right wing media spin machine is at it again. Sinclair and Staples are trying to back off from what the company stated. You can read Media Matters' letter here.

Update: Staples has announced that it is not yanking its advertising for reasons cited in the Media Matters press release. I have made an inquiry of Media Matters and will keep you updated...

It was exciting to see that Media Matters for America has announced that Staples will no longer advertise on the biased local news shows of Sinclair stations in the United States. Sinclair, of course, is the right leaning network of stations that was caught up in the recent "election" controversy.
As a result of Staples' ongoing review of its advertising media buy activity, Staples will no longer be airing advertising on any Sinclair station’s local news programs as of Jan 10, 2005.
David Brock, President and CEO of Media Matters said:
Sinclair Broadcast Group has a responsibility to provide balanced programming. We applaud Staples’ action, which gives a big boost to our effort to encourage Sinclair to provide balanced coverage.
You can read the entire statement at here. Make sure you also take a look at Media Matters free daily newsletter exposing the lies of right wing media.

CONGRATULATIONS TO
MEDIA MATTERS FOR AMERICA!!

Oops...She did it again!

Psycho-Preacher Fred Phelps, also know as the Wacko from Westboro, is at it again. Apparently, Fred felt that it was not enough to praise the tsunami for killing 2,000 Swedes, so the obviously deranged nutcase decided to show love, tsunami style, by thanking God for "3,000 dead Americans."

At least one thing is true...Fred is consistent. Click here to see the new flyer at Raw Print, the document vault of RawStory.
