Paying the Price

Test complete.

The blogACTIVE confidential test mailing was a huge success. In a matter of minutes I was able to send over 3,000 blogACTIVE subscribers the item on the House of Blues. Many great letters were generated, including this one, which informed HOB that there are gay men and lesbians who will not financially support homophobic businesses.

From a blogACTIVE reader:
Dear All,

My partner and I are members of the HOB [House of Blues] Foundation Room in Las Vegas and I am horrified that you are actually willing to sell out our safety in order to make a buck. While I fully support the First Amendment and everyone’s right to free speech, I also believe in corporate responsibility. That said, it is your responsibility to cancel the upcoming Sizzla show in Cleveland. This is a responsibility that your company even has in writing in your commitment to “promote racial and spiritual harmony through love, peace, truth, righteousness and non-violence.”

What if instead of encouraging violence against gays Sizzla or another performer encouraged violence against African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, or Jews? Would you cancel the show then? Without a doubt you would, and rightly so. So, please explain to me why my life, as a gay man, is less valuable to you than anyone else’s?

I have tried to think of some reason why your company would make such a heartless move. Even if you called it a “business decision”, that doesn’t add up considering that gays have the highest disposable income when compared to any other demographic. That spending power far outweighs the amount of money you would bring in off of one single hate-filled show.

However, this decision shouldn’t be about money, it should be about doing what is right. As if our struggle hasn’t already been difficult enough, the current political climate is making our lives harder and hate crimes are on the rise. We certainly don’t need your organization rewarding performers who only seek to make it worse.

If your organization does not chose to do the right thing by canceling Sizzla’s Cleveland show, my partner and I will have no choice but to cancel our membership and encourage our friends to do the same. While I have enjoyed our membership, I will not stand by a company that won’t stand by me.

Sincerely,
Keep those letters coming.

For those not on the mailing list, I will be adding subscription links soon.

TAKE ACTION: House of Blood on its Hands

House of Blood On Their Hands, Cleveland

You'd think from what's going on in America today, we're turning back the clock to the Salem Witch Hunt Days. Latest is that the folks over at House of Blues seem content in canceling only 1/2 of the concerts by rabid homophobic singer Sizzla's. According to this press report, Sizzla's music includes:
“Shot batty bwoy, my big gun boom” (Shoot queers, my big gun goes boom); “Boom boom! Batty boy them fi dead” (Boom boom, queers must be killed); and “Mi a go shot batty bwai dem widdie weapon ya” (I go and shoot queers with a weapon).
You can use the power of email to start to tell people at House of Blues how objectionable it is for them to make money off hateful music. Just days after rapper Kayne West made international headlines calling for an end to homophobia in hip hop, we have the House of Blues making money by promoting this hate music.

You can TAKE ACTION by clicking here and sending a note to the folks over at the The House of Blues. Let them know what you think about their support of homophobia. (as always, a copy will be sent to our letter file -- you can opt out by removing the blogactive address from the copy field)

Congrats to Good As You

I don't have one of those huge blogrolls because I can hardly focus on my work at hand (no jokes, please), let alone spend the entire day reading blogs As part of the systems upgrade, I have added an amazing RSS reader (we're adding RSS to the sites as well) and I am keeping track of more interesting items related to the work of blogACTIVE. I am also happy that I'll be able to do more direct action and more TAKE ACTION posts.

As the summer wraps up in DC, the political season gets hotter. I'm experimenting with blogACTIVE and PageOneQ's new mailing system by sending out some old stories to new audiences. I'll report on the first test shortly, it's a funny action based on one of the prior stories. Ahhhh, automation.

I want to point blogACTIVE readers to Jeremy Hooper's Good As You site. Jeremy was profiled in the new issue of The Advocate, the gay and lesbian newsmagazine (subscription info). Make sure you stop by Good As You, the site is a fun way to get involved in taking action on behalf of the lesbian and gay community.

An Apology...

The past few months have been a very trying time for the work of this blog and recently a commenter on an earlier post alluded to divisions on the left blogosphere and the disagreement I had with some others on the blogging left.

The comment was up for three days before I decided to take it down at namely because it contained confidential information that I was not sure the anonymous commenter was authorized to release.

That being said, The events of the past few months have left me realizing that yes, I have made some mistakes and, while it's obvious that I am not the only person blogging and engaging in disagreements with traditional political powers, I do readily admit the mistakes I have made. My mistakes were born of a passionate desire to help the left...My twenty years on the left is, I hope, a good enough example of proof of that. Also, while I acknowledge them, I do feel that m y errors are no worse than some of the other mistakes people have made either. Suffice to say I am reaching out to those who I feel I owe an apology to. I do hope they can forgive me for what got out of hand.

I think some of this tied to the fact that I am not involved in a partisan campaign. Sure, my blog exposes more hypocritical GOPers than Democrats, but I've always said that says more about the GOP than it does about me. As a lifelong Democrat, however, I will continue to work hard for the left, as I have done ever since I was a student campaign manager for a successful state senate campaign.

I never got involved in this as a business, and I've learned that it's quite a cutthroat one at that. I have decided to modify how blogACTIVE works, focusing more on the work and the importance of exposing hypocrites in the government. In return, I as for your support in accepting my apology and moving forward. I am sorry for how this situation has ended up. I take ownership for the mistakes I have made and I do apologize. What more than that I can say, I am not aware.

TAKE ACTION: Kudos again to Maher, Write to Phyllis Schlafley

This week's Real Time with Bill Maher was even a better hit on the right wing than last week, when Bill askedf Phyllis Schlafly about her gay son and the hypocrisy she represents. What Bill forgot to mention was that her gay son is actually an attorney at mom's homophobic Eagle Forum.

This week Bill had Dan Savage (left) on the show. Dan, editor of The Stranger and author of the hilarious column Savage Love, does a MUCH better job of representing the average gay American than does Maher's other frequent gay cultural critic, Andrew "Sully" Sullivan. (Dan looks alot better on the show that Sully did -- and Dan didn't take to putting on displays such as this on live TV.

You can TAKE ACTION by clicking here and sending a note to the folks over at the anti0-gay Eagle Forum. Let them know what you think about their hypocrisy. (as always, a copy will be sent to our letter file -- you can opt out by removing the blogactive address from the copy field)

Closing the political party gap

Because of the posting and work here I have met and encountered some amazing folks from all sides of the political spectrum. Today, one of my favorite lesbian and gay news blog, Gay Orbit (left) posted an item that I linked to the other day. I bring this up because the site linked to from Gay Orbit today is another of my favorite blogs, BoiFromTroy. (You know fall is just around the corner when the BfT posts his guide to the upcoming college football season.)

Then it dawned on me. Could Madonna be wrong after all these years? Maybe it's football that keeps the world together. (Note to Madonna:Music makes the people come together.)

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves over at BfT. While the folks in Washington scream back and forth about loyal affiliation to their political party, damn the consequences, bloggers like GayOrbit and BoiFromTroy really do think outside of the box.

At Gay Orbit, blogger Michael Demmons is an effective writer who offers up great commentary on news of the day. And while he and I disagree where to draw the line in my reporting on blogACTIVE, our disagreements have been very respectful. I sure wish that our Congress were able to put down the rhetorical speeches long enough to debate marriage equality as they did in Canada, where Demmons hails from. I sat here amazed watching the House of Commons actually debate marriage, with the Members actually having a civilized -- or is that civilised?) discussion.

Over at BoiFromTroy (right) there's a great mix of gay GOP politics and college football. There's a huge network of gay college football fans (SHOCKING!) -- more on that in a moment.

BoiFromTroy takes my work with his tongue planted firmly in cheek. Some of my favorites are An Argument Against Roberts Being Gay, Gay Games Under Attack, and The Ethics of Blogging.

Another interesting new "football fan as blogger" entry, this one from the left, thank goodness, is Wannabeleader. Be sur to check out this University of Michigan student blog, Wannabeleader.com.

With BfT coming from the right, Gay Orbit moving in the middle, and Wannabeleader on the left, maybe gay people can be what brings people together. Hell, it worked for Lincoln.

Peeking inside the closets...

I've been busy still working on a few stories and to shore up the news site, PageOneQ. Look for some new stories as we head back in to political season.

Thanks to my computer angels out there, the new mail system is in place and blogACTIVE is about to get a whole lot stronger. I'm in the process of adding over 30,000 press contacts to the mailing database and I am going to be making an exciting announcement about some of the actions we will be able to take via email.

In the meantime, Michelangelo Signorile has posted a great item over on his site, Signorile.com. He does a great job of calling out St. Patrick's Monsignor Eugene Clark. Apparently little Eugene didn't pay attention in Falling On Your Knees 101. Certainly they didn't tell him to fall on his knees with a mistress at a Hamptons hotel, did they?

When last we heard from the rector at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Monsignor Eugene Clark, it was April of 2002, when he made headlines amid the priest sexual abuse scandal, practically calling for a new Spanish Inquisition, this time directed solely at homosexuals.

I've been in St. Patrick's Cathedral one time in my life. I walked in and sat in a pew right near Michelangelo in 1989. He was wearing a black and white overcoat blending in among the faithful. We were all carried out, by the police, in what was on of ACT-UP's famous actions. It's good to see Mike still standing up to these hypocrites!

Taking a look inside the hate den...

Reading Max Blumenthal's blog is always enlightening (and I really like that fact that he's smart enough not to have one of those silly, meaningless disclaimers on his site.)

Over at the Nation's site, he has a great column about the recent Justice Sunday (aka Gay Bashing Sunday) event. While the entire piece is worth a read, this paragraph made me laugh a bit (the 'phobes are so easily confused):

In 2004 Perkins's Family Research Council released a pamphlet, "The Slippery Slope of Same-Sex Marriage," introduced with the tale of a Missouri man who wants to marry his horse. "The logic of his argument is remarkably similar to that employed by advocates of homosexual marriage," the pamphlet states. Perkins recently told a reporter from the Vancouver Sun, "You ask anybody that's investigated homosexual murders and without question they are the most violent...even the sex act itself is violent in homosexuals." (Such comments contradict a claim made on Dobson's Focus on Your Child website that boys who are becoming gay "dislike the roughhousing that other boys enjoy.")

And just in case anyone is unclear about the goals of these right wingnuts are, Blumenthal ends with this great quote:

The true underlying agenda of Justice Sunday II was undisguised in the rousing speech given by Bishop Harry Jackson. "We need to tell both parties, 'It's our way or the highway,'" Jackson told the cheering crowd. "You and I can bring the ruling reign of the cross to America."

Still reaching across the aisle

A great piece today on Blogcritics.org about how the civility in politics is being abandoned by the right wing. We know this is true because without it, their message would never stand up to the scrutiny of honest open debate. There is no way, for example, that the forces behind banning gays from being married could ever debate the issue the way they did in Canada's House of Commons. A civil back and forth about the issues, now wouldn't that be a change of pace in DC.

If our nation actually engaged in an honest and open debate about our issues those who oppose us know their battles would be over.

Here's a bit from the Blogcritics.org piece:
I think it's safe to say that George W. Bush's 2000 campaign promise to bring civility back to Washington has been abandoned. No surprises there, considering the promises broken by this president.

[W]hile a handful of Democrats have attacked Bush, it has been Republicans, and the conservative pundits, that have done all they can to vilify Democrats and liberals. They claim we're terrorist sympathizers and that we're guilty of treason for speaking out against the war in Iraq. They claim we're on a campaign to persecute Christians and to destroy "traditional" family values by attempting to "legitimize" gay marriage.

The pundits have also written books attacking liberals. Ann Coulter, a frequent guest on shows like Fox's Hannity and Colmes, has written a number of books slamming liberals. Sean Hannity of Hannity and Colmes also writes books, and includes titles that say "Deliver Us From Evil...defeating...Depotism and Liberalism." As if liberals were a group that needed to be destroyed. Michael Savage's latest book likens liberalism to a mental illness.
Ultimately, it's the truth that has people moving to the left. Lies and deception -- like living in closets while bashing gays -- have their way of getting out there. Is it any wonder the Bush administration has opted to not let go of control of the key computers which control the Internet.

Excellent work by Bill Maher

Wow!

So there Maher was interviewing broken record Phyllis Schlafley on Real Time's season premier, when, from way left field he reminds Schlafley that her own son is gay and Maher asks why so many conservatives have gay kids... Maher mentioned Dick Cheney and Alan Keyes specifically.

Major props to Mr. Maher for calling Phyllis out, well more specifically her S/M aficionado son, not that there's anything wrong with that, unless of course you're her son AND working for her non profit organization fighting against the progress of gay rights.

I interviewed Schlafley's son once. I have a feeling it's time to create a new Roy Cohn Award...

While We Sit and Bitch, Gay Human Rights Abuses Continue

Andy Harley of UKGayNews is pissed...
Iranian teens are executed because they are gay!

11 gay men languish in jail for over four months in Cameroon, un charged, but there because they are gay!

Teenage boys are being forced into the sex trade in Iraq.
He has a right to be pissed, I'd say!

Welcome to Vote Against Hate in 2008

So, the BlogAd goddess must have heard that I was rejected from Advertise Liberally and decided to send a new advertiser my way. And not only that, but they have a really nice looking ad.

I hope you'll take a minute to visit Vote Against Hate in 2008. Their stickers are nicely designed and I love the philosophy of the artists. This is from the site:

If you want to take a look at their stuff, that's their colorful ad on the left. If you buy something, be sure to tell them that blogACTIVE.com sent ya.

Thanks Polistiks, and welcome!

Huh?

"ex-gay" Richard Cohen
(Not counting mentor cuddling, of course)

So...lots of Ex-gay news today. WaPo has a big item on the Ex-gay movement and then there's this item on reparative therapist, Richard Cohen.

Cohen is married with kids (not that he'd be the first gay man to do that, Right Mr. Schrock?). What really hit me hard in the article was this interesting paragraph (the next to last one):
Touch plays a central role in his therapy, said Cohen, who does not treat women. He recommends that clients develop intimate friendships with heterosexual mentors who will cuddle them in a parental, nonerotic way, making up for the love they did not get from their fathers.
So Richie thinks the way to straighthood is by being cuddled by "heterosexual mentors"...Isn't that what they used to call being in the closet?

UPDATE: The absolute best resource on the "ex-gay" movement is WayneBesen.com. I've been a fan of Wayne's for years...and recently has the honor of meeting him in DC recently. He's a one-man operation on the dangers of the "ex-gay" movement.

One homophobe I hope is not secretly gay

365gay.com has a very interesting item up this morning. Apparently, some are wondering if anti-gay preacher Fred Phelps is gay

From the site:
(Chicago, Illinois) The head of an Illinois group fighting same-sex marriage and partner benefits says he wonders if militant anti-gay preacher Fred Phelps is actually a gay plant.
...
[Anti-gay activist Peter] LaBarbera went on to say: "Politically and culturally speaking, Phelps and his protesters serve as a crude caricature of pro-family traditionalists who oppose the normalization of homosexuality. Fred makes an easy target for the media and secularists who are tempted (partly by their own prejudices) to paint any opposition to 'gay rights' as hateful. For this reason, I have sometimes wondered if Phelps and his lawyerly clan are 'gay plants.'"
Peter, this isn't a case of protesting about the other guy to take to focus off of you, is it?

It just doesn't ad (network) up

For those of you who are not yet aware, I had an interesting back and forth with the folks at a blogosphere advertising network. At first I was quite upset about the fact that although this blog is the largest LGBT one listed in a recent report on the progressive blogosphere, the people who call the shots at the network deemed it inappropriate.

At first I was given some bull**** excuses as to why I wasn't allowed in, so I decided to do some investigating on my own and learned about some connections and administration that made me very uncomfortable. Thus, I wrote and asked to be removed from all further consideration.

Unlike many in the blogosphere, I've never tried to make this work partisan and I'm proud to have stories to share like GOP State Senator Paul Koering, who, although I disagree with on many issues, is still a hero in my eyes.

I always thought that Senator Koering's story would help explain to people, especially insiders in DC, that I reach across the aisle every day. Unfortunately, some of the very same insiders are so blinded by the same political allegiances that they condemn the other side for, they never pay attention long enough to learn anything from my work.

For those of you interested in more of the details, be sure to check out my recent post on Watching The Watchers. While I can't get into all of the details in the post (I have sources to protect and innocent people on the left are working hard who I will not cause harm to), you can learn a little bit about the former right wingers who now want to control the left.

Happy reading. As always, comments and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.

PS: f you are looking to place an ad on blogACTIVE or PageOneQ, click here. Not only are the rates great and the support helps the keep the site going, but I am happy to give away ad purchases to lesbian and gay non profits if you prefer to have a group get the benefit of your ad.

Where we're headed...

As regular visitors to the site know, it's just not possible to post the story of a closet case who is hurts the gay community every day. I am working on more than a few interesting cases (don't worry, Senator, I haven't forgotten you). As the blog and the challenge of exposing these hypocrites becomes more well known, it's interesting to see who supports the telling of the truth and who does not.

I see that Marilyn Musgrave (E-CO) -- E is for Extremist) has put her Federal Marriage Amendment on hold as she tries to retain her seat in Congress. Perhaps the rough and tumble of politics that led to the creation of this site got a little too rough and tumble for Musgrave's colleagues in the House and Senate -- I know of at least one closet case who said to two different sources that he hope Musgrave would back off, as he felt that his case would be reported soon on blogACTIVE.

And they say this campaign is not having any effect.....hmmmmm..

Supporting the battle against the "ex-gay" movement

Bearing Witness, the Quaker and Greenpeace philosophy, is a great way to expose to the light of day the wackos of the ex-gay movement. Make sure you counter the "ex-gays" by checking out the Fish Can't Fly site and watching the movie.

By hearing the stories of those who have struggled in those dangerous programs we're bearing witness to the suffering of our gay and lesbian brorthers and sisters in these reparative therapy camps and churches.

BlogActive.com is largest LGBT Progressive Blog

Woo Hoo.

According to a new report, issued today, this blog is the nation's largest progressive Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender issues blog on the web.

The only other LGBT blog listed is the absolutely wonderful Pam's House Blend, run by Pam Spaulding.

One note of concern about for me about the report is the fact that the authors seem to have left out some important disclosure information about their activities as they relate to the blogosphere. One author, in conjunction with BlogPAC, runs and personally benefits financially from an advertising network that will presumably benefit financially from this report. The other author failed to disclose his employment with a gubenatorial campaign. While these omissions do not devalue the important work of the report, political folks on the web will need to establish more transparency before we are seen as fully accountable.

Hmmmm....

"Mike, you think EVERYONE is gay!" my friends often say. Now, to be clear...I do think there are plenty of people who are gay and don't admit (or realize) it, but I don't think everyone is gay.

It took, for example, conservative bloggers at Conservative Bloggers Who Support The Gay Judge Roberts to write about Judge John G. Roberts, Jr., Bush's nominee to the Supreme Court.

Pro gay? Think again.

The summer in Washington has been really HOT. Too bad I'm not a Senator who can vote to go on recess.

I have a few thoughts on the latest dustup around John Roberts, Bush' nominee to fill the seat of retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. It's quite fun to watch the right wingers freak out about Roberts' helping the victorious side in the landmark gay and lesbian rights case of Romer v. Evans. Of course, being a pro-gay extreme right wing member of the Federalist Society is not what I'd like to see on the court. He's no Ruth Bader Ginsburg for sure. His approval seems fairly certain. While I wonder what his term will mean for gays...I am as equally concerned about what his principles will mean for women and the right to choose.

Every gay and lesbian person should support a women's right to do with her body what she chooses. Period. Those who disagree are hard pressed to explain why the state has the right to control women's reproduction but not lesbian and gay intimacy. Rick Santorum thinks the state should control both. That is why he scares me. Knowing that Judge Roberts helped out a case in 1996 does little to reassure me that he will keep the state's (or in my case the District's -- one without a vote in congress, even) hands off my body.

Sorry for the posting problems...I've been in the process of installing a new computer and my workflow will be MUCH faster now. Prior to this week, the most recent relationship I was in long-term was with the Windows Hourglass. By the generosity of a very close friend and family member, I am now blogging in front of a Mac G4, Dual processor. It's got two screens (all the better to lay work out on), video capability (more on that in a moment), and every bell and whistle. Even the Mac wireless bluetooth keyboard is lightyears ahead of my old PC.

Yeah, I'm officially now a Mac convert. For those that have preceded me, enough said. For the non believers....well, what can I say? Some day you'll understand.

With the attached Digital Video Camcorder, I will be adding video broadcasting to PageOneQ. I can't share every detail just yet, but I can tell you this...What we'll have is available NO WHERE else on the web. The ability to move information via these machines is amazing and I can tell you that over the next couple of weeks, the launch of the video stuff will really enhance what you'll be able to find on Q.
