ON DIRELAND: ARNIE DENIES HIS GAY PAST WITH MARRIAGE VETO

READ THE STORY ON DIRELAND

UGH...I know blogACTIVE readers have had it up to here (hold hand up high) with these men who sleep with men and then deny others the equal rights they have just because they deny who they are to themselves.

Doug Ireland does a great job of explaining Arnie's stint as a same-sexer.

Governing is tough business. Even tougher when a politician has to choose between what is right and what is wrong...Too bad Arnie did the wrong thing in a shameless effort to win reelection.

This of course is not much of a surprise. After all, Arnie's use of gay baiting is well documented. Could anything be more homophobic than his elevation of "girly-man" into the public discourse? (Interesting considering that he married someone who is actually butcher than he is.)

Decades from now, when history is codified, the minor extensions of California's civil rights that he signed as cover to veto the nation's first legislatively approved marriage equality bill, will not be included.

This, my friends is not the first time that an elected official has used gay people to win votes. It's rather obvious that Arnie's Austrian past has had more of an influence than he ever let on to.

There's no TAKE ACTION here, the historians will take care of that.

I just love it when I get copies of letters like this

I love the lettercopy@blogactive.com It's where I get some real fun stuff to read.

blogACTIVE reader William King penned this letter to Chris Crain over at the Washington Blade. With Williams approval, I am reptining it here.

TO: Chris Crain, Washington Blade

You have got to be out of your fucking mind.

If in fact you wanted to showcase the views of conservative gays you could hardly have found a worse candidate than Guckert/Gannon. The still unresolved circumstances of his bizarre journey from gay hooker to member of the White House press corp should be reason alone NOT to give him a platform in the Blade. Jim/Jeff's sudden conversion to bisexuality is another laughable development in his strange 15 minutes of fame. He has no credibility, but obviously you're looking for a gimmick. Your sad little defense of this fool shames you.

The Blade's recent re-invention as the official smokescreen of the vast DC underground of closeted gay decision makers is simply pathetic. As the leading gay publication in our nation's capital, you should be Gay-America's advocate. Instead, you cover up for Ken Mehlman, David Dreier, Jeff Berkowitz and all the other self-loathing collaborators who are working hand-in-hand with the GOP to worsen the oppression and marginalization of gays in America.

Who are you to preach tolerance when Guckert is just a sad little sissy version of Sean Hannity spewing the GOP party line? A party line that is anti-gay from start to finish. How much tolerance would you expect to receive if Guckert's pals Santorum, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Falwell, etc have their way with our nation?

The management and staff of the Washington Blade have failed in their service to their readers and to the greater community of gay people in this country.

That was fun....Another take action

Well, well well....Just when we thought former wrestling coach Dennis Hastert had control of his causcus in comes a mini-revolt. To put it BLUNTYly, in a closed door session of the Republican House members, closet case David Dreier was tossed as the heir-apparent to Tom "I'm Indicted" Delay.

S0 much for the big tent, eh?

Since we have California on the mind, Rex Wockner (one of the best gay news reporters in the nation) writes on his blog:
...I'm mildly intrigued that Arnold still hasn't vetoed the bill the Legislature sent him legalizing same-sex marriage. He promised to veto it, it's been on his desk for six days, and there it still sits. Do you think -- dare we think -- that the TV ads comparing him to George Wallace, and the entreaties from Hollywood pals and Maria might -- just might -- have gotten to him?

Could he actually be thinking about his legacy, and wondering which chapter he wants to be included in? The one about bigots who fought the very last battles opposing inevitable civil-rights advances -- or the one about minimally visionary politicians who were able to look a mere year or two into the future and see that that cutting-edge bill was just ever-so-slightly ahead of its time?

Knowing what I know of the Governator, I don't think he'd be happy being in the George Wallace chapter at all.
TAKE ACTION: Call Arnold Schwarzenneger in this easy to do 15 second action...from a blogACTIVE reader:
Though the Governator has threatened to veto the same sex "gender neutral" marriage bill, he hasn't yet. October 9th is looming though. You have an opportunity to have a voice. Let it be heard. Its honestly just that simple. A friend forwarded me this info. I just did, and I was off the phone in 15 seconds.

Call 916-445-2841 and follow these steps:

1 - Press "2" - to comment on legislation

2 - Press "1" to comment on AB 849 (AB 849 is the gender neutral bill, which will allow same sex couples to marry)

3 - Press "1" to support it.

4 - No 4....you're all done.

FROM TEN PERCENT(ER) TO MAJORITY LEADER!

UPDATE: I just knew that Dennis Hastert couldn't stand some queer congressman right under him.

GAY U.S. REP. DAVID DREIER IS SPEAKER HASTERT'S PICK FOR MAJORITY LEADER AS DELAY IS FORCED TO STEP ASIDE OVER INDICTMENT.

DAVID DREIER AND DENNIS HASTERT: FLOOR ACTION!

This is big, because we've laid the groundwork for this one. It's already been reported in Hustler, it's been reported in LA Weekly, and you can bet that now that David Dreier is Hastert's pick for Majority Leader, the press will look even deeper into the man who will replace Delay. If Delay is "The Hammer," perhaps David could be called "The Pounder." Hmmm, on second thought, maybe "The Poundee," is a better call here -- not that there's ANYTHING wrong with that.

TAKE ACTION: CALL DENNIS HASTERT AT 202-225-2976 AND THANK HIM FOR STANDING UP TO THE RADICAL RIGHT BY RECOMMENDING A GAY MAN AS MAJORITY LEADER.

And, Dennis, can you tell us exactly how David Drier will fit into this FLOOR ACTION section from your website?!

Jeff Berkowitz, selling out the gay and lesbian community

To jump to the TAKE ACTION, click here.

President Bush's liaison to the Jewish Community, Jeff Berkowitz, is a gay man blogACTIVE has learned. In addition to speaking extensively with two of the four original tipsters, this information has been confirmed by five independent, separate, corroborating sources, including:

-A source inside of the White House;
-A lobbyist for a top conservative lobbying firm;
-An individual who had a sexual encounter with Mr. Berkowitz; and
-Two personal acquaintances of Jeff.

In addition to being the President's liaison to the Jewish Community, Jeff Berkowitz has had his hand in building the current anti-gay majority in Congress. And, on top of the many sources above, this story has been confirmed by an individual who used to work with Mr. Berkowitz at, get this, Generation GOP. GenerationGOP is the organization created to recruit young people to the GOP platform (including the denial of civil marriage equality) and candidates.

Here's a bit from Jeff's bio:
Jeff Berkowitz is a political and communications strategist specializing in youth outreach. He serves as Senior Advisor and Web site Editor for Generation GOP. He was Northeast Field Director for the College Republican National Committee prior to the 2000 Presidential Primaries and has worked on numerous political campaigns throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
And, In Arkansas, Jeff helped to get conservatives registered in time for the vote against civil marriage equality:
"Over the past six months Generation GOP, the group led by these young men, has registered thousand of conservative students at college campuses across Arkansas."

Update: from Jeff's bio:
"Jeff is an Eagle Scout and Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America." -- Be sure to ask Jeff if he support the Boy Scouts, even though they refuse to have gay leaders and members.
TAKE ACTION: E-MAIL Jeff Berkowitz AND the editors of major Jewish press in the United States. Tell them what you think of this hypocritical gay man.

If you prefer to just write to Jeff to let him know your thoughts. (Note: A copy letters sent by blogACTIVE readers will be sent to the site. To remove the copy, just clear the bcc box.)

Political disagreements can be celebrated

UPDATE: He's over the top.
MEMO TO LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS
Hire this man, he's clearly better at messaging than you guys:

OK, I admit it, I'm a lifelong Democrat. (Well there was one week in 1981 where I thought that Ronald Reagan was gonna be ok...but I got over it well before Election Day --- And we all know how dangerous it can be to elect an actor to the post of California Governator...but, I digress.)

In the spirit of reaching across the aisle, I'd like to ask BlogActive visitors to stop by BoiFromTroy.com. BfT, a gay GOP blogger brings a wonderful sense of sanity to political discourse....AND, he's about to hit his millionth visitor! Woo Hooooo!

Congratulations BoyFromnTroy, and thank you for being one of the few GOPers out there who really get it. Yeah, we may not agree on everything (For example, I know that Katrina was Bush's fault) but your blog is aces in my book! (And all the cute football players too!)

My Marilyn Musgrave encounter

Marilyn Musgrave appears at
Pat Robertson's Regent University

I was down at the Capitol today...I thought it would be fun to poke my head into the Rules Committee meeting headed by gay Congressman David Dreier (R-CA). Now, if you're interested in meeting and talking with members of the House, committee meetings are the way to go. Everyone is cordial before the meeting starts. In one small meeting room I saw a number of people I admire -- Maxine Waters, Louise Slaughter and Doris Matsui.

Then, sitting there waiting for Dreier to show up and start, who walks in? Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO). Who sits down right next to me? Marilyn Musgrave! For those unfamiliar with her, she has a ZERO rating fro the Human Rights Campaign, AND, she is also the sponsor of the doomed Federal Marriage amendment.

Rather than describe it...I'll give you the exchange here:
Marilyn: Hi
Me: Hi
Marilyn: How are you?
Me: Very well, thank you. You're Representative Musgrave, right?
Marilyn: Yes, but don't worry, I won't make you uncomfortable
Me: Well, Representative, I'm a gay man and you want to restrict my equal rights, so I think it's kind of expected that I'd be uncomfortable if I found myself sitting next to you.
Marilyn: Well, there's no need to feel uncomfortable, I don't feel uncomfortable sitting next to you.
Now I was going to move, but there are exactly four seats in the room for guests, so there was not much of an opportunity for that...Trust me, I would have if I could have. After a few uncomfortable moments later (Marilyn avoided eye contact with me for over 10 minutes), Dreier walks in and is about to start the meeting, when I couldn't resist:
Me: So, Congresswoman, you're not here to reintroduce that ridiculous Federal Marriage Amendment, are you?
Marilyn: You are really out of line, cool it.
Me: Well, perhaps you should cool the attacks on my friends and family.
"Cool it" ??? No wonder the people think their Representatives are out of touch. They can use their bully pulpit to broadly attack millions of people, but the minute one of them is confronted on their own turf, the best they can muster is "Cool it?" Perhaps THAT explains the GOP's tumbling in the polls. They SAY they want a national debate. Yeah. Right.

After about 30 minutes of hearing Representatives argue the virtues of allowing "faith based" groups to have the right to discriminate in hiring, I had enough. As I was getting ready to leave, a Congressman from Louisiana explained that in the wake of Katrina, faith-based groups needed the right to hire those who supported the beliefs of their religion. Naturally, the GOPer made up lies about President Clinton, which Rep. Louise slaughter jumped on and challenged. She even questioned the Constitutionality of such a proposal.
My civic lesson of the day: Excuse-o-matic: Katrina, the new 9/11.
After that is was time to leave, as I was off to a meeting with a man who had a sexual relationship with a Bush White House official...more on that next week.

On the way out, I notice Rep. Maxine Waters sitting by the door, "I'm one of your greatest fans, Congresswoman."

"Thank you," she said, making the entire trip worth it.

TAKE ACTION: EDUCATE DAVID DREIER'S STAFF

TAKE ACTION: Call David Dreier's office at (202) 225-2305 and ask: "How can a gay man like David Drier vote against the Hate Crimes Prevention Act?"

ACTION UPDATE: Call David's Cali office too; They are probably less out of touch there with the gay congressman's activities in DC: 626-852-2626.

Clearly David is subservient to the hateful leadership (I'm no petite guy, but not even I could stand to bottom for House Speaker Denny Hastert the way David Dreier bending over on a daily basis.). Or is it that he hates himself THAT much? (Either way, my domina friend in Cali tells me that the subservient thing is not that far off from the truth, at least according to her sources, none of whom have been wrong in the past.)

UPDATE: A clarification. David did not vote against the entire bill. He voted only against the Conyers amendment that added SEXUAL ORIENTATION. In my opinion, this is actually WORSE. I mean come on your self loathing fag. You vote FOR the bill, but you wish it DIDN'T include gays? What a sad, sad man(?) you are.

UPDATE 2: A reader asked if Dreier was actually outed. A number of times here, on Raw Story, and in Hustler mag.

Huge Victory.

With all the excitement in Massachusetts, I thought about my work and my friends in Massachusetts quite a bit today. From the first free email account I set up to seek tips over a year ago, stoptheFMA@yahoo.com -- I knew that the charge for my age group of gay and lesbian leaders was simple: Give the next generation of our brothers and sisters a country with no Federal Marriage Amendment and at least one state with full marriage equality. With that as my standard, I'd say we're dong OK so far.

It's hard for me to convey the overwhelming feeling I had when my friend Omar called me from the Statehouse in Boston and held up his cell phone as the vote tally was announced. The crowd literally went wild and, a few moments later, erupted into the national anthem. All day, I've been juiced by this huge victory for gays and lesbians around the world. It's another step that will resonate for a generation, nay, centuries, to come.

This is the reason I write blogACTIVE.

Congratulations Log Cabins, what's 145 days anyway?

UPDATE BELOW

I suspect it was the busy party season over the summer (ya know, Rehoboth and all) that had the Log Cabins -- a gay political club in DC -- completely forget that they never bothered to acknowledge the courage shown by Minnesota State Senator Paul Koering.

It's been 4 months and 23 days since blogACTIVE first noted that the LCR team refused to properly acknowledge Koering and the fact that he stood up to the likes of Michelle Bachmann and voted against Minnesota's anti-gay marriage amendment. The Log Cabins posted this as part of their Recognizing Republican Heroes series.

What is amazing about the club's posting is that it doesn't even mention the fact that Koering came out of the closet as a direct result of his courageous dealing with the marriage issue. (Note to national LCR: It's OK to be gay!) Considering how few of the heroes that the Log Cabin club recognizes are out of the closet, proud gays and lesbians, you think they would celebrate pride. (I know, you can count the out lesbian GOP politicians on one hand -- hmmm, come to think of it are their ANY out lesbian GOP politicians? -- but inclusivity is key, in case their is one out there.)

Congratulations, Log Cabins...Better late than never.

(PS: are you moving on to the non-White GOP heroes next week, perhaps?)

UPDATE: The guy on the heroes list right above Senator Koering? US Senator John McCain, ya know, the guy who wants to amend his state contitution to bar gay couples from the benefits of marriage! UGH! McCain is not the enemy - he did oppose the FMA---- but HERO? come on, that is over the top.

New York Magazine Outs Anderson Cooper; More role models needed

It was just a matter of time. Despite the best efforts of his handlers at CNN -- they're known to call sites and ask editors to delete references to Anderson Cooper being gay -- New York Magazine has now penned a 5,000 word article outing him.

Cooper defends not coming out like this:
You know, I understand why people might be interested. But I just don't talk about my personal life. ItÂ’s a decision I made a long time ago, before I ever even knew anyone would be interested in my personal life. The whole thing about being a reporter is that you're supposed to be an observer and to be able to adapt with any group youÂ’re in, and I don't want to do anything that threatens that."
A note to Anderson from blogACTIVE:
Our country is in a place right now where the only openly gay people on the news seem to be self-loather Andrew Sullivan and once-closeted-DADT-supporting Pete Williams. Young, gay kids are in need of positive role models...and you can be a shining star to them. Lord know there don't seem to be any other propects in the CNN family to be the "out gay guy."
You guys should have the guts to put on intelligent gay men who actually represent a majority the community. Dan Savage and Michelangelo Signorile are two of the absolute best when it comes to TV and getting the message. They've worked on the liberal, pro-gay left for many years...never betraying us...and the best you guys can get is Sully and Rummy's former mouthpiece?

And Anderson, have you heard the bias of some of the CNN anchors? Between Lou Dobbs bashing of immigrants and Wolf Blitzer's Fox-like Situation Room, our side could use a boost, especially from a well respected, gay (gasp!) anchor like yourself.
I hope Anderson Cooper one day can be as proud of who is as a gay man as he should be about his riveting work from New Orleans.

And now back to "outing"

It's kinda scary when I talk to young gay activists who were born well after I played Borderline on my 33 1/3 record player in the early 80's. She was a star then and she's a star now...and she has something to say about outing.

I sure wish the reporter asked her about outing those who are actually anti-gay. Since the great one didn't seem to object to outing gay politicians, I can only imagine that she would have little problem exposing the ones who fight gay people.

I am sure I'll catch flack for this

Save the comments about how all this site is supposed to be for is "outing" -- which is really "reporting." It's a blog people...and that means the blogger gets to post what he or she feels like sharing.

As a PETA member and a vegetarian (those who tell me I have no compassion by running blogACTIVE don't really understand me at all) I am saddened by the many stories of people being forced to abandon their pets in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Now, before anyone goes ballistic and says "Mike, do you want us to forget the people and save the dogs?" just remember that I never said helping people should take a back row to helping pets. That being said, helping pets IS helping people. At times of great tragedy pets provide important companionship for people.

There's a sad article in the Washington Post about The plight of animals and how it's getting worse each day. (Full disclosure, in addition to being a PETA member, they have taken an ad on the site to support their relief fund. If you're so inclined, check it out.)

Whoa....slow down....

UPDATE: On this, Republicans and Democrats agree!

As our community unites to respond to those most in need in the wake of Katrina, I've been especially proud of groups like the National Youth Advocacy Coalition, Rainbow World Fund, and the many agencies stepping up to the plate to help displaced people receive important and, in many cases, lifesaving assistance.

Stories like that of a couple from Virginia, Michael and Raymond, who rented large vehicles and drove to devastated areas to find LGBT community members and bring them to their home, abound. Each day my email is filled with stories of places like Arkansas' Center for Artistic Revolution, The Montrose Counseling Center and the Houston Gay and Lesbian Switchboard helping our own.

And. Then. This. ?!

As every group -- from Montrose Clinic to MCC Churches -- works to help pick up the pieces of this devastating event, the Victory Fund is out raising money, even going so far as to mention their work in storm devastated Mississippi. (Of course, when I first opened the email and saw "NO" in capital letters, I thought the email was about New Orleans and the other areas hit by Katrina: "This in (sic) NO off year for Victory!" -- pathetic.)

I've worked at a national gay and lesbian organizations and I know the reputation that many have for being greedy, money grabbers. It's examples like this that not only harm Victory Fund's credibility, but reflect poorly on our entire community. Let's hope it's isolated to this one group.

In a week of so many moments of pride, this is one that is truly shameful.

Hitting Hard....which is the only way to hit.

I spent a good portion of the holiday weekend reading Michelangelo Signorile's new book, Hitting Hard. OK, I admit it, I am biased, but only because Michaelangelo and I agree on so damned much.

If you're a Signorile fan, or just need a primer on this amazing journalist/radio talk show host's thoughts, this book is a perfect thing to pick up.

I first had the honor of meeting Michelangelo when I moved to New York in 1989. A few months after starting work at the Harvey Milk School, I found myself sitting in the same pew as Michelangelo at St. Patrick's Cathedral during ACT-UP's famous action. Following what was one of the most successful actions in the AIDS movement's history, I became an avid reader of his famous writings in Outweek and, later, Out, The Advocate and an array of other publications.

Hitting Hard is a compilation of essays. The book begins with "Outing's Triumphant Return," first published in 1996, and takes readers on a journey of queer activism on topics as wide ranging as the exposition of Andrew Sullivan as a moralist by day-bareback sex pig by night, the outing and coming out of Rosie O'Donnell, the discovery of James Guckert/Gannon, and the coming out of NJ Governor James McGreevy. (In one observation, Michelangelo notes that the development of the internet has actually assisted some of these closet cases to remain in the closet while still seeking sexual encounters. -- This site has shown the knife can cut both ways, just ask Ed Shrock)

My favorite -- in a book full of them -- is the essay first published in New York Press in March of 2003. In "What Gay Media?" Signorile excoriates the mainstream press for its treatment of gays. He then goes on to slice up Sullivan; even while acknowledging Sullivan has adopted some of the author's own arguments about the closet and society. Don't fret, even though Andrew may get a point here or there, there is plenty for him to be challenged on.

A hundred years from now, Hitting Hard will be required reading in every gay and lesbian history course (of course, in 100 years, such courses will be taught everywhere!). The book is not only the definitive collection of a decade of work by the nation's preeminent gay journalist-talk show host-activist, but it does an amazing job of summing up 10 years of a movement's struggles, setbacks and advances.

The book, fittingly, is dedicated to:

Mary Cheney, Arthur Finkelstein and the rest of the gang.
May they each find a conscience.

Reading each essay shows the reader how those who attack us lack just what Signorile hopes they find.

Thanks, Michelangelo, for a real treat.

Wondering why they need to beat up gays in the Bush Administration?

Well, if you were running a government like this:

The Dept. of Homeland Security tells the Red Cross to stay out of New Orleans (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Chicago offers a major supply of aid -- the feds answer back with a curt "No" (Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times)

Halliburton gets a no-bid contract to clean up after Katrina (Houston Chronicle)

National Guard plays cards in New Orleans while hurricane victims drop dead (Agence France-Presse)

FEMA interferes with relief efforts in New Orleans suburbs ("Meet the Press", NBC)

You'd want something to distract you from the real issues at hand too. These guys should be tried for treason. So glad they sold us a campaign that gays are bad and the Bush Administration is keeping us safe.
UPDATE 1: Police shot eight people carrying guns, killing five or six. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal.

UPDATE 2: Thanks to a reader for correcting the headline above. Apparently, Halliburton landed the contracts pre-Katrina, in a bidding process. For more information on the cozy relationship between Halliburton, Kellog/Brown/Root and the former FEMA Director who is now their lobbyist check out this item on Halliburton Watch. (When it's this shady, there's no reason to make up headlines.)

Hurricane relief

With the wingnuts having a field day blaming everyone from the gays to the abortion doctors for this, the reality is that many are suffering. I hope people take a moment to visit the Rainbow World Fund or another charity of your choice.

For those not familiar with Rainbow World Fund, it's the gay community coming together to address world crisis. The group is 100% volunteer, which means that everything you contribute goes directly to the most needed places.

Now, about the real cause of this hurricane. BoiFromTroy has it all figured out...To think it took a GOP blogger like him to piece it all together. Good work, BfT.
