The death of Pierre Seel

If you have seen Rob Epstein's film Paragraph 175, you can't help but remember the powerful words of Pierre Seel as he recounted his experience as a gay victim of the Holocaust. Despite what I thought was a certain numbness to new survivor stories -- no doubt a result of years of Hebrew school and visits to Holocaust museums in the US and Israel -- I was mesmerized by Seel because he represented a new part of me that was also central the Hitler's path of destruction.

Pierre Seel

Hitler and his followers were the antithesis of Seel and his male lover. As Seel stood in horror as his lover was fed to animals, he was consumed by his love for another man. The criminals, of course, were consumed with an equal amount of hate.

I do hope you will take a moment to read Doug Ireland's outstanding piece on the life of Pierre Seel, as France's longest surviving known gay Holocaust survivor, Seel's recent death will close another chapter on a book in our history which should never be forgotten.

WELCOME TO DUMBFUCKISTAN

Dumbfuckistan.
That is what a reader told me he and his partner call their home state of Virginia. And, living across the bridge from that godforsaken state, I really am now wondering how queers would choose to live among those people. (The civil war reenactments are more than enough evidence that the place is a completely backwards place -- why would the LOSERS want to reenact a war?)

The Washington Blade reported a few moments ago, that Virginia has upheld the convictions of two men for soliciting sodomy:
The Virginia Court of Appeals upheld the convictions of two men who were convicted of "solicitation to commit sodomy" earlier this month.

The solicitation charge, which carries a three-year maximum jail sentence, is based on Virginia's "Crimes Against Nature" law, which states:

"If a person carnally knows in any manner … any male or female person by the anus or by the mouth, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, he or she shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony."
Over a year ago I submitted proof to the Virginia Attorney General's office about the same crime: Incontrovertible proof showed that then-US Rep. Ed Schrock did exactly what these two men did... Then-Attorney General Jerry Kilgore's office took no action.

The mug shot that never happened --
Ed Schrock, proof of Virginia's selective enforcement
of sodomy laws against non-Republicans

Could it be because like Kilgore, Schrock is a GOP Republican? Or could it be because Kilgore himself was the target of many gay rumors during his recently lost Gubernatorial bid? I spent quite a bit of time chasing leads (across the country, no less) on Mr. Kilgore. In light of his office's culpability in this case, I'll let you know more about that next week.

Now, before anyone runs off and says "blogACTIVE is about to out Jerry Kilgore," slow down. That is not going to happen. BUT, the very fact that so many Virginians just THINK Jerry Kilgore might be gay may just be what pressed his office to fight against these gay men. And certainly the questions hanging over the campaign did have an effect....

Was Joseph McCarthy gay?...

From Rotten.com:
14 Jan 1952: In his private diary, Washington Post columnist Drew Pearson records the Washington rumor that Senator Joseph McCarthy is gay.

25 Oct 1952: "Joe McCarthy is a bachelor of 43 years. [...] He seldom dates girls and if he does he laughingly describes it as window dressing. It is common talk among homosexuals in Milwaukee who rendezvous in the White Horse Inn that Senator Joe McCarthy has often engaged in homosexual activities." Hank Greenspun, Las Vegas Sun. McCarthy briefly considered a suit but took no action, because it would have meant testifying.
On NNDB.com:
The Young Republicans held a state convention in Wausua, Wis., at which Sen. McCarthy was an honored guest. During the convention, McCarthy spent the night with William McMahon, formerly an official of the Milwaukee County Young Republicans, in a Eausua hotel room, at which time, McCarthy and McMahon engaged in illicit acts with each other.
I don't know if he was gay....but the guys he slept with apparently were.

The Advocate on Roy Cohn & G. David Schine

The latest issue of The Advocate educates a new generation of gay readers about one of our community's greatest traitors Roy Cohn. Cohn, the namesake of this site's award is detailed in an item by Sarah Wildman:
The senator's top aide was closet case Roy Cohn, who played a key role in his boss's [Senator Joe McCarthy witch hunt and in his dramatic televised downfall.
Cohn, attempted to use his influence to save the object of his affections, G. David Schine, from serving in Korea. In a test of wits, the Pentagon not only refused Cohn, but also made public the many times Cohn intervened on behalf of the Army private. Wildman explains how Cohn's witch hunt against gays was an effort to cover up his relationship with Schine.

Accusing the Army of sending Schine to war to ruin the investigation of communists in the military, resulted in the now famous Army-McCarthy hearings, which ultimately led to the downfall of McCarthy.

OK, it's off topic...but I like it anyway....

Just because this can't be said enough:
"I like guys who've never been there that criticize us who've been there. I like that. I like guys who got five deferments and never been there and send people to war, and then don't like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done."

-- Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), quoted by Knight Ridder, rebuking President Bush and Vice President Cheney "for their aggressive new campaign to denounce war critics.

On second thought....

I felt it was quite a lead when I learned that a senior staffer in Congress had decided to indicate that he was "straight acting." What made the revelation especially interesting is that this senior staffer is one of the very same gay men who has been protecting his boss, a closeted member of Congress with less than a stellar record on gay rights.

After I wrote the post I ran it by a handful of folks -- as I always do -- who I trust for advice and input on this work. Unanimously, they said, 'Don't do it." I'm smart enough to listen to those folks I trust on these matters and while I suspect that I could convinced them about the value of this one, I decided to heed their advice.

Looking over the decision, I think having a senior staffer in Congress covering for a closet case is A LOT more frequent than this one case... so just having the dialogue in important.

There are those, however, who want to goods.... Sorry about that, but here's a little more.

As for the term "straight acting," I pity the man (and yes, you never see women saying, 'straight acting') who must go through life acting every day -- but then again, perhaps that's why he works for Congress.

A question for blogACTIVE readers

OK...Here's a question.

What exactly does a guy on an online dating service mean when he claims to be straight acting? Discuss.

As you ponder the question, take a look at this. True, it's almost ten years old, but so what? It was brilliant then, and it's brilliant now:
A gay man and a straight man, even if they are identical twins, even if ... they are dressed exactly the same way, and even if the gay one is trying as hard as he can to be 'straight-acting' (whatever that might mean) are instantly distinguishable, at least to the trained eye. That is because they gay one is constantly watching himself in his mind's eye. ... Straight men do not have to 'act' straight, because the essence of straight behaviour is the lack of self-awareness and self-projection. Gay men, on the other hand, are constantly self-aware and self- projecting, and can no more 'act' like a straight man than a butterfly can act like a cockroach.

Outing campaigns hit the road again

Religious fundamentalism is bad. Christian, Jewish, or Muslim - it doesn't matter to me. Because I've been involved in political and civil rights groups, I focus my work on political people. I've admired the recent work of Keith Boykin and Jasmyne Cannick in their campaign questioning the most homophobic Black ministers.

And now, it appears as though the Catholic church is dealing with a potential outing campaign. It's not political activists exposing gays within the church's hierarchy, it's priests. It is, I believe, a brilliant response. From the Associated Press via The Advocate:
Anticipating the Vatican pronouncement, some gay priests are discussing collectively staying away from pulpits on a Sunday to show how much the church relies on them. Other priests said they were considering revealing their sexual orientation to parishioners. Some are contemplating "outing" gay bishops who would be called upon to enforce the new guidelines. [Emphasis added]
You go guys. Call out every one of them.

Another statement from a dangerous cult leader

Thanks to BradBlog for this...

It's quite a relief not having to figure out who is eligible to call on "god" for help:

The town of Dover, PA, in deciding to elect school board members who believe in science over magic have apparently pissed off the Lord Almighty!
"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city," Robertson said on his daily television show broadcast from Virginia, "The 700 Club."

"And don't wonder why He hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help because he might not be there," he said.
Of course, how genuine is he when he calls them "good citizens?"

Self Defense...at least the courts got this one right

I'm a non violence advocate. But when someone is confronted with being physically attacked they do have the right to fight back. That's what Philadelphia Municipal Judge Gerard Kosinski said earlier today.

The judge has released the gay man, who fought back in self defense, not from one or two attackers, not even from three or four or five or six. Seven men attacked this one guy. I don't care if you're Mike Tyson, seven against one is pretty stacked odds.

Judge Throws Out Charge in Gay Attack

If gays and lesbians are attacked on the streets, I 'm glad they are fighting hard back...and the same holds true for politics. As Lucas Dawson showed us, and the court agreed, people have a right to self defense, and that right, plus a small pocket knife might just be where the self proclaimed righteousness of these bashers ends.

Now, we all know that the right wingers will take my comments out of context and say "Mike Rogers supports violence." Nothing can be farther from the truth. I'm so anti-violence that I'm a vegetarian!

Many community leaders have told the media that while they do not engage in the kind of work do, they do understand why it is happening. I feel similarly on the arming of gays, lesbians, bi and trans people. I'm not one to walk around with a knife...but I do understand why some people do.

The news is peppered with more and more hatred against gays. In the past week we have seen a US Senator introduce the Federal Marriage Amendment to motivate the base for the 2006 elections... We've seen the KKK march in Austin Texas, and we've seen a rainbow flag burned at a protest in Indiana. Is it any wonder we're starting to arm ourselves with the tools ands weapons to fight back?

How did I know?

I was reading the news this afternoon, when I saw the headline:

Rep. Sherwood Settles
Alleged Abuse Suit

We know these guys don't admit anything, so settling an abuse suit where he not only cheated on his wife, but he did so by physically assaulting a woman, is quite a signal. Way to go Representative. I bet Randy Kuhl is proud to be your colleague.

Before I read the story, I thought to myself, I bet this guy Sherwood has a bad rating in the Human Rights Campaign's Congressional Scorecard. How did I know?

I've just learned that the Senate's Judiciary Committee is to take up the Federal Marriage Amendment. Senator Brownback of Kansas must think that by renaming his proposal the Marriage Protection Amendment people won't notice what he's up to. Crafty bunch those right wingers are.

If you're a long time reader, you'll know that this effort to amend the Constitution was the final straw after the stolen election of 2000 is one of the reasons I sarted this blog. (The site's first e=mail address was fightthefma@hotmail.com!)

I'm over it, Senator. And so are many readers of this blog. If you want to use the US Senate to trash my life and the lives of my friends simply to appease your 'intelligent design' base, I say BRING IT ON! If you want to use our lives to convince the American people that gays are the problem with their marriages, have at it. In my opinion, reporting on the anti gay adulterers and anti gay closet cases in the Senate is the same as the lies that these Senators tell.

TAKE ACTION AND CALL ARLEN SPECTER...Tell him that this amendment should never see the light of day on the floor of the US Senate...

Comment Deleted

The site has had bit of a back and forth with one Garreth Westwood. Over a YEAR after he posted a comment, he wrote in to ask for it to be removed. I asked a volunteer to write back to communicate that the site generally does not remove comments.

Not satisfied, Mr. Garreth wrote back, threatening to "escalate this to HaloScan [the comment manager]." I wondered, why would someone want a comment removed over a year after it was removed? Interest piqued, I dug into the comments system and came up with the original post. Quite a piece of work:
Where were all you left-leaning Democrat types "outing" the hypocrisy of a so-called feminist president who sexually harassed and abused women? (That would be Clinton). Where were you then?

Or how about outing ***** and *****...there are red flags there!

I am no supporter of Ed Schrock and he obviously is a conflicted man. But being addicted to a homosexual lifestyle or being trapped in confusion about one's orientation doesn't make one a hypocrite. It is possible that Ed Schrock knew that his homosexuality was wrong and his politics reflected that. He was a force for good.

Instead of resigning, Schrock should have contacted a Christian ex-Gay ministry for counselling--in much the same way an alcoholic joins AA.

Is a recovering alcoholic a hypocrite for voting for tougher drunk-driving penalties. No!

It is interesting how your site is silent on how Gov McGreevey played the "coming out" card to distract us all from the rank corruption of his administration. Who is the Hypocrite?

Shrock was weak for resigning. I guess Sam Francis is right about America having two political parties: the evil party (Dems) and the stupid party (GOP).

One thing that might have backfired on your campaign is that you really have inspired me to get into the fight. I need to get into blogging so we can expose the hypocrisy and the darkness of the homosexual movement. Contrary to your sense of triumphalism, your victory is not inevitable. The backlash will come.
I deal with emails like Mr Westwood's comment every day. Rather than "escalate" the issue -- whatever that means -- I took his comment from September, 2004 off the comment board.

I am sure he will be happy to know that I fulfilled his request.

Washington Post Admits: Elections Fix

I was looking over on WaPo tonight following election. I've been looking at the Maine vote on civil rights equality, a race between a 'phobe and a friend for Virginia governor, and the three states where some want to deny marriage equality. Glad to know that even the Washington Post knows the elections are fixed.

From WaPo:

Long time readers know that one of the main reasons I started this blog was in response to the fact that the votes of three-thousand Jewish retirees, many of them Holocaust survivors, had their votes stolen in 2000. 3,000 of course is greater than the margin Bush operative Katherine Harris certified. Now, if people sleep better at night believing that over 3,000 of these retirees actually meant to vote for Par Buchanan, that's cool. But come on, does anyone truly believe that?

I thought it was great to watch each party point fingers at the other. "Oh well, the county is run by Democrats." Or, "Jeb Bush and his cronies did this." Isn't it a shame no one is blaming the real problem, a failure of the entire system. Of course, it's no shock that one party doesn't even care about fixing it.

And, hey, isn't it nice that when something is broken, we called it a Fix.

Much Ado About Outing

Jasmyne Cannick

Over on PageOneQ, Jasmyne Cannick has an article up, Much Ado About Outing. Readers may recall that Jasmyne and Keith Boykin waged an activist campaign to educate the country about the homophobia of some of the best-known Black ministers.

As many of have done when we encounter homophobic leaders -- Shrock and Dreier, for example -- Jasmyne and Keith wondered if some of the greatest offenders were, perhaps, themselves gay. Their work caused quite a stir. Jasmyne writes about it today.
No single article that I have ever written or protest that I have participated in has garnered as much attention as the Outing Black Pastors campaign that I did with my colleague Keith Boykin . It was a simple idea hatched in a casual conversation of Black gay activists while in Washington D.C. Frustrated with the increasing number of attacks on same-gender loving people by Black pastors, we decided to take action. The action in this case was calling out Black pastors on their hypocrisy as it relates to the gay community and their relationship to the current Bush Administration.
Asking a person, "Are you married?" or "Do you have children?," are not bad questions. Gays and lesbians have skirted around such queries ( do love that word, queries) for as long as marriage and children have been around. Today, however, those in positions of power who are anti-gay are being challenged more and more with such requests for infomation

Jasmyne writes:
For the record, there is nothing wrong with asking a question. My experience has shown that the people who are the most adamant on certain issues also tend to be dealing with their own issues. People who are comfortable with who they are usually don't care as much about what other people are doing. Which lead me to an obvious question, are these pastor's gay?

Who is in denial?

At least one of the people who is a correct answer on my new game is in a little bit -- ok A LOT -- of denial about their sexualuty. Over at PageOneQ, I have a new game up called WHO SAID THAT?!. It's fun to see who goes to great lengths to prove -- or at least try to convince the public -- that they are straight. Not, as in the words of Jerry Seinfeld, that there is anything wrong with that.

Another really gay looking homophobe

It's no shock to blogACTIVE vistors when an anti-gay guy looks really, really gay. Seems to me that maybe 50 Cent may be protesting just a tad too much.

50 Cent says, "Being gay isn't cool - it's not what the music based on. There's always been conflict at the centre of hip-hop, because it's all about which guy has the competitive edge, and you can't be that aggressive if you're gay.

"If being straight isn't your preference, well, that's up to you. But there's no successful men in hip-hop.

"I mean, some rappers are fruity, but they don't say they're gay out in the open."
Hmmmm....Looks like she's ready for the DC Eagle to me.

Wingnut Writer: 'A Gay Mafia in the Republican Party?'

Well, I've been claiming there has been for over a year now. Now comes along an interesting article from PHX News. This right winger is crazed over the GOP being infested with gays, (And it's those 'homosexuals' who outed Dreier, he notes):

Over the last ten years, an increasing number of Gays have turned up at high levels in the Republican Party. There is an organization called the “Log Cabin Republicans” which is openly Gay. Bob Dole angered mainstream conservatives when he accepted a donation from them in the ‘96 presidential election. Michael Huffington, a Republican candidate for Senator in California in the ’90s was exposed as being Gay only after he lost the election. Congressman David Dreyer [sic] was outed by fellow homosexuals during his last election, which he nearly lost due to his soft stance on illegal immigration. Are these Gay Republicans who’ve been outed a sign of a much larger problem?
Of course any article form the right wingnuts on this topic needs the obligatory gay-baiting. Sure, there have been rumors of Karl Rove being gay...and he has gay baited every one of W's political opponents for the past 15+ years...but Karl, if it's so, it's not as if there's anything wrong with that:
One article reports George Bush’s closest advisor, Karl Rove, has been seen frequenting a Gay bar in Washington DC. Another article reports “The Gay Republican Mafia is evidently in control of the Party, even as they spin hard to avoid the obvious questions. How did so many closeted ‘conservative’ gay men wind up in the upper echelons of the GOP? Should the GOP be called the Gay Old Party now? With gay RNC chairman Ken Mehlman and the latest outing of fake reporter Jeff Gannon, a GOPUSA/ Talon News shill, the issue of Karl Rove has come out as well, so to speak.”
Can't leave out Mehlman, can he?
Most ordinary Americans don’t have a clue about Karl Rove or Ken Mehlman. Many Americans don’t know that Karl Rove has been frequently referred to as “Bush’s brain.” Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sixpack have been blissfully ignorant of the true nature of the Bush regime. They think everything is being done for sincere, patriotic reasons while nothing could be further from the truth.
...
The truth is that we need a new political party. The Republican Party only pretends to represent our interests. The top level of the GOP is infested with Gays and would shock ordinary Americans if they ever got a close look.
I'm glad the right-wingers are realzing how nuts it is to have homos head the GOP.

Speaking of forcing men into the military closet...

In case anyone was wondering if Don't Ask, Don't Tell is working... Let's take a look at this bit of news out of Germany. A US Army chaplain was sentenced to five years in jail after forcibly sodomizing three members of the military -- male members of the military.

What is to blame here? Surely getting men drunk and forcing sex on them is unacceptable. Isn't it sad that policies -- those of the Roman Catholic Church (he's a priest) and the Military -- contribute to this situation.

Outing members of the US Military

Friends often ask, "Why do you spend your time reading comments on your blog?" The answer is simple. Comments are the way to assess what is on the minds of visitors to blogACTIVE and are often the source of leads and stories. With an RSS reader (I use NewsFire), it's easy to quickly read every comment posted on the blog; which now total over 8,400!

Every so often, a comment is worth elevating to the front page. I recently receive such a comment from a member of the military:
I work for the US Army which is a pretty homophobic institution. Would it be justifiable to out me and ruin my career? Just curious
The short answer is 'No,' and the reasoning is simple. One of the hallmarks of blogACTIVE's work, since day one, is that this site does NOT report on individuals who will lose their job as a result of appearing on this site. With the ridiculous policy known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) in place, reporting on members of the military is not something blogACTIVE engages in. Tens of thousands of gay men and lesbians, perhaps more, serve in the United States military. They serve our nation well and to report on them simply because they serve under such hateful laws makes no sense to me.

The United States military branches – Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard are serious business, not some fantasy for anyone to make light of. Most important, our brothers and sisters in the military are serving DESPITE the policy, not BECAUSE of it.

There are other cases when this blog has not reported on individuals because potential job loss was part of the story. When Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) released a written statement that he would not employ gays in his constituent offices, the case of one of his employees was closed. (At the same time, an Inhofe spokesman explained that this rule did not apply to committee staffers, and thus one of the first stories reported here was of Jonathan Tolman.) Why a gay man would want to serve on the committee staff of a Senator who would fire gays from his constituent offices is beyond my comprehension. Could there be anything more self-loathing for a political staffer?

Every -- well most -- rules have exceptions. If I learned that a senior military officer was gay and was also engaged in the management of DADT, working to destroy lives by discharging gay men and lesbians from the military, I would look at such a case with a much different eye than others serving our nation.

If you are a member of the military and are gay or lesbian, be sure to check out the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. If you're not in the military, check 'em out anyway so you can toss a few bucks their way to help defend our gay brothers and sisters in the miltary.

For more information on who REALLY is against our men and women in uniform, refer to Jesus' General, American Patriot and Operation Yellow Elephant.
