Ya got that right, Liz... High as a kite

Talk about spin....

National Republican Senatorial Committee broke:
Outgoing NRSC Chair Elizabeth Dole, R-NC, e-mailed out a fundraising appeal to the committee’s “most loyal and generous supporters” today seeking help digging out from under “an avalanche of post-campaign debt.”
...

Dole said she felt the Republicans could “walk away from this election with our heads head high,” despite the fact that they lost both houses to the Democrats, because “we fought hard in all our U.S. Senate races and still managed to keep the Senate extremely close!” (emphasis added)
Elizabeth is right... Heads held 'high'.... Was he referring to Haggard?

I am sorry

From the comments... and from even stronger e-mail, you'd think I jumped back into the closet and became an anti-gay member of congress.

Yeah... It's been a week since the last posts... I thought it would be a novel idea to take of a week (my first since mid 2004) to spend some time with my family over Thanksgiving.

Little did I know that such a move was, apparently, way out of line.

I'm sorry.

What will Dobson think?

Remember Jay Timmons? I reported on him at the same time I reported on Foley operative Kirk Fordham, in July 2005. Jay was the very first recipient of the sites Roy Cohn Award.

I wonder what LaBarbera, Dobson, Fallwell and Perkins think about closet case Timmons raising funds to help closet case Fordham? I'm not sure...but I'll find out because I'm making sure the top conservative leaders know about the fact that they are closeted gay man.

What is amazing here, is that Timmons sent the letter the day after the GOP tanked and lost it all. (The Foley scandal, perpetuated by Mr. Fordham, was a major contributor to that loss. Timmons, the former executive director of the National Republican Campaign Committee, should know better.

So, the secret cabal of closeted gay men (as opposed to those who live honestly) clearly put their own needs above the party's. Have you seen Kirk's puts their

Republicans worry election lessons haven’t been learned:
Several Republicans on K Street said they were also flabbergasted when they received a solicitation for donations to a legal defense fund for a staffer at the center of the page scandal. The e-mail request for money was sent a day after the election when Republicans were still reeling from the losses.

"I am astonished by the audacity of this," one GOP lobbyist remarked in an e-mail. "They didn't even wait a respectful amount of time so that people could get over their grief over last night's results."

Jay Timmons, senior vice president of policy and government at the National Association of Manufacturers and former executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, sent the e-mail, entitled "Kirk Fordham's legal expenses," last Wednesday to several K Street lobbyists, asking them to forward it to others.

Fordham resigned as Reynolds's chief of staff last month. Before moving to Reynolds's office, he had been Foley's chief of staff, and when the page scandal broke, claimed he had tried to warn senior staffers in Speaker Dennis Hastert's (R-Ill.) office about Foley's behavior at least a year earlier. Hastert's staffers dispute this, and argument between Fordham's and Hastert's offices over the issue.
Now, before you cry a river for Mr. Fordham, remember that he was the chief fundraiser for homophobe Sen. Mel Martinez, the new RNC Chairman. And I can't imagine he's doing all that poorly... the house he's in is worth a cool $700,000+ -- and that's just the tax assessment...we all know houses sell for a lot more than their assessed valued.

Charlie: Living it up in South Beach

*** For the sake of confusion, these Where's Charlie posts are parody***

We can all thank Norskbamse for finding Charlie Crist. He was hanging out in gay South Beach in his home state of Florida, the same place that the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (the country's oldest LGBT civil rights org) has their annual Winter Party.

It seems that Charlie had been trying to feel better after screwing Florida's LGBT community only a few days before the election by hanging with the boys down on the beach. BlogACTIVE even managed to snap a quick picture before Charlie disappeared from the scene.

Charlie managed to escape the media this time, but he knows there are only so many times he can hide from the public as the evidence continues to grow.

Clearly this guy doesn't monitor Idaho media

As always, I'll call this right wing author myself. I'm sure he won't be interested in talking about real issues, of course.

The author of the piece is not exactly all that aware of media. Saying there was no coverage of Larry Craig and misidentifying Ed Schultz -- Ed has nothing to do with Air America and he's got a MUCH bigger audience -- signals this guy didn't bother to pick up an Idaho newspaper or listen to Idaho radio. (He also wasn't there as I played tapes of a conversation with a man who had sex with Craig.) Apparenly, the guy also missed coverage of Craig on Bill Maher, MSNBC, or CNN:
Rocky Mountain News: Opinion Columnists: "Today, threats of outing are used as blackmail, and might amount to criminal extortion, depending on the jurisdiction. Last year, Washington, D.C., homosexual blogger Mike Rogers warned that a vote for the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito would result in the outing of a senator. Several weeks ago, Rogers followed through on his blackmail, although the claim was so bereft of evidence that it received little attention from most media, other than Air America's Ed Schultz.
I'll report back on my call on Monday.

Why I think Matt Foreman is a great leader in our community

When I began this work two and a half years ago, there were heads of gay and lesbian organizations who told their board members to not have any communication with me. (Luckily, many of them disregarded the direction and give me tips.)

Click to visit NGLTF

It would be easy for a group like the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to decry outing. But the good people at NGLTF have never been known for taking the easy path out. When the progressive organization takes anti-war and pro-union stands, it's because they understand that the only way to victory is by building alliances between progressives across America.

New Gay 'Outings' Sign of Gossip Culture (Associated Press):
"Many major gay rights groups oppose outing, saying it's a personal choice and should remain so. But there is a difference of opinion when it comes to the idea of outing political figures perceived as harming gay interests.

'When someone is in a position of power and they are using that power to hurt gay people ... it's perfectly appropriate that they be outed,' says Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. 'We don't do it, but we have no problem with it.' (emphasis added)

Foreman notes that the type of 'outing' happening these days shows, in one way, that social progress has been made. 'The stigma around being gay is gradually diminishing,' he says. 'At one point it was a huge scandal to say someone was gay.' Now, he says, what fuels 'outings' is something else: 'It's not, 'This person's gay.' It's, 'This person's gay and can you believe what they're doing with their power?'

Where's Charlie???

You may remember some of the work Mike and I did with Florida's governor-elect Charlie Crist. You know, Florida’s newly elected anti-gay Republican Governor... the one who, all evidence seems to indicate, is gay.

So while the search to find 100% concrete evidence continues, I've decided that we as the LGBT community need to keep track of Charlie. Today, I am happy to announce the fabulous game:

Every once in a while I will blog a Where’s Charlie post. That will mean it’s time to guess where Charlie is based on the clues I give. The first person to guess correctly wins… nothing, but our admiration and respect. Ok, we’ll also throw in an LGBT related DVD.

Let the games begin!

p.s. The Where's Charlie posts will often be accompanied by news on outing Crist.

Where’s Charlie #1:

Clue: The nation’s oldest LGBT civil rights organization gets down, when it’s cold, here.

Recruiting the Gays

Now, it's not what you think. I'm a big fan of "10% is not enough. recruit. recruit. recruit!", but I'm talking about the gays being recruited. Yes that's right, you'll never guess who I just got a fabulous myspace message from: The Marines.

Did you know that splendid opportunities await us all with the marines?

Let's not talk about the hypocrisy of experiencing "the pride of being a U.S. marine" while being forced to hide our pride of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. At least not on here.

So instead let's talk about it with Gunnery Sergeant Montney, the nice young man who is trying to recruit me. You can reach him at
(304)550-7562 or at clermontmarines@yahoo.com.

Go ahead and give him a call or send him an e-mail explaining why all of us would make the finest marines and why as of right now, none of us ever will.

A great save, Bill

Bill Maher on Nightline last night:
Larry kept pressing me about this issue, about gays and names. And I thought that well, you know, I'm a political junkie, probably like you are. And so, you know, in my writer's room, this is anything but news. And by the way, I'm not a million percent sure it's true. I mean, I never dated the guy. But I don't feel especially bad about if this happened to a Republican who is very much part and parcel of this administration, which has used gay issues so divisively. It's hugely hypocritical.

Committed to a Cause

All over America people are lining up for something important. It is a cause they believe in, one so mind-boggingly immense that people are willing to camp out for over a week just in order to partake in this momentous occasion.

All over America people are lining up for their Playstation 3's.

Up to nine days before the PS3 is even released people have been camping out in front of stores. When was the last time you heard about people camping out for a week to stand up for a cause? How about camping out for a day? How many people who spend sleepless nights working for social justice go unrecognized every day?

I feel its even worse in people my age, especially students. Here are my colleagues, camped out in front of a TV, floating in a pool of the privilege of the educated while those whose voices are silenced struggle on.

But no, it's ok, video games are the truly important things in life.

America knows its priorities.

Hey Everyone

First off, let me say thanks for the welcome. It’s been a long journey to get here (2200 miles so far, and another 900 left). Yet, as I sit here in D.C., and ponder whether the last two years have been worth it only one answer pops into mind:

Hellz yes.

It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but actually you can read all about that in Mike’s post about me. I’ll just skip to some of the more juicy bits.

- Sushi is amazing.
- You can get all your LGBT news here.
- I just came from a conference put on by these guys.
- See this movie.
- I like long walks on the beach and…

That’s enough about me.

For those of you wondering, I am not only in D.C. to have a gay ol’ time, but also to keep the pressure on soon to be former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman. Let’s just say Mike and I will be keeping Ken’s feet to the fire about his anti-gay stratagems and whatever influence the RNC has over the mainstream media’s continuous double standard concerning people’s sexuality.

I hope you all stay tuned here at blogACTIVE. It’ll be worth it.

Oh, and as Margaret Mead once said:

“Never doubt that a group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”

Meet Kyle DeVries

What a week that was! And, I'm talking about a lot more than the election.

This time of November seems to always bring big news.

Thirty years ago last week, I went through the Jewish right of passage into adulthood, a Bar Mitzvah.

Twenty years ago this week I turned to a friend and, for the first time, said, "I am gay." As each of us knows, our own coming out process is unique. While we may have similar experiences, each of us deals with the uniqueness of our own family and friends.

Ten years ago, I was in Alexandria, Virginia attending the Creating Change conference run by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Working as the Development Director of NGLTF and as a fundraiser for New York's Harvey Milk School have been two jobs I have been honored to serve my community in.

This year, the first week of November has brought historic change in America. Elections like this happen less often than once a decade, so let's relish the tossing of the most homophobic Congress in American history.

This week is also significant to me, as I've decided to expand the blog to include a new blogger, Kyle DeVries.

Kyle DeVries

In my twenty years of work in the community I have met some of the most extraordinary activists on earth. In ACT-UP I met gay and lesbian leaders and visionaries like Michelangelo Signorile and the artist Keith Haring. At the Harvey Milk School I met gay and lesbian teenagers who took their personal stories and shared them with countless others by doing the most important thing we can do, be out in our lives. And, at Greenpeace, I met a team of environmental activists as committed as any I have met in the LGBT community.

And then I met Kyle DeVries.

When I first spoke to Kyle, he was interested in being involved in Proud Of Who We Are, the organization I founded to reach across the political spectrum to encourage politicians to live their lives openly and honestly. Kyle's work was directly responsible for Jeb Bush's little outburst when he called a reporter a "horse's ass" in response to a question about the apparently gay Governor-elect of Florida.

Kyle has stepped into the role of managing Florida's chapter of Proud Of Who We Are. I can assure every one in Florida they will be hearing more from Kyle and PWWA. On the national level, Kyle will serve as PWWA's executive vice president.

And, I'm pleased to announce that Kyle is joining blogACTIVE as my co-blogger. Kyle's fresh perspective and eye to the future is just the voice the site needs to have. By any standard, Kyle has an impressive set of credentials. When you factor in that he is twenty years old, his accomplishments are really amazing.

I asked Kyle when he began his activism. In his words:
It began my first week in college. I saw some typical right-wing nutcases screaming anti-choice rants and weaving signs featuring grotesqueries of fetuses. At first I figured this for a normal day in North Florida. Then I realized not only were these people touting radical anti-choice sentiment they were also praising a man who had murdered abortion doctors. It took me about five minutes to rush to the art center, make a sign that read "support women's right to choose" and rally students around me. Within half an hour we had driven them off campus.

I was hooked instantly.
Since that event, Kyle has recruited support for marriage equality on his college campus, organized a rally on the steps of Florida's capitol, and formed a campus LGBT activism group. Kyle also has experience with Florida's Democratic Party, The Sierra Club and the Florida League of Conservation Voters.

This year, Kyle was chosen by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to participate in their Summer Organizing and Training Fellowship. Kyle moved to Cincinnati and for three months and worked as a field organizer and fundraiser. This fall, Kyle is working at his school, Florida State University, to pass a local human rights ordinance that would provide protections against discrimination in employment. As I post this, I've been meeting with Kyle, mapping plans for the next two years worth of work. (Kyle is in DC after driving 2,100 miles from Florida to Kansas City for Creating Change 2006, and then DC. When he returns home, Kyle will have driven 3,000 miles in one week...all for our community.)

Kyle is the kind of activist I am honored to know. I hope you welcome him to blogACTIVE.

Some Names Were Named, but Not for Long - New York Times

The New York Times covers CNN's decision to remove a part of Bill Maher's appearance on Larry King Live:
During the comedian Bill Maher’s appearance on the show Wednesday, he and Mr. King discussed several of the factors contributing to the Democrats’ election victory the day before, among them scandals involving several Republicans, including Representative Mark Foley. Mr. Maher then began to speculate on the sexual orientation of some high-ranking Republican officials, and Mr. King, seeming to forget that he was on the air, asked for names.

The comments were broadcast live, but CNN’s rebroadcast of the show later that evening cut a portion of Mr. Maher’s remarks. In addition, the transcript presented on CNN’s Web site, as well as the one provided to the LexisNexis archiving database, also omits the comments, noting that “a portion of this transcript has been removed.” (A spokeswoman for Nexis said that CNN was responsible for any editing of the transcript.) A video clip from the show available on cnn.com ends right before Mr. King asked Mr. Maher for his opinion about the Mark Foley scandal.
If CNN really claimed that they are worse than I thought.

Shocker: Ken Mehlman did not return NY Post calls

Ken Mehlman....I can't wait for him to be out of that job...I have a feeling he'll be MUCH more accessible for questions. (Rumor has it he'll manage a Presidential campaign...It will be interesting to see how the far right wing reacts to that!
United Press International:
Two sentences that implied Republican Party boss Ken Mehlman is gay were edited out of a segment on the 'Larry King Show' in some U.S. time zones.

The New York Post reported Saturday that comedian Bill Maher made the comment on the CNN show, but that it was edited out in later time zones Wednesday and did not appear later in the show's transcripts.

Maher told King that the Republican Party was 'secretly run by hypocritical gays,' and then later named Mehlman as the specific homosexual individual he was referring to after King egged him on.
...
Mehlman, who resigned from his position Friday after his party's landslide defeat on Election Tuesday, did not return calls to the Post when they sought his response nor did Larry King's spokespeople.

A great overview

I am a big fan of Deb Price of the Detroit News. You can see her column linked every week from my news service, PageOneQ.

This week, Deb writes a great analysis of the elections and what it means for gays. In this overview, Deb doesn't forget about the gains we made outside of Congress, in state legislatures and Governors' mansions.

The whole article is great, but I'm partial to the part where Deb reminds us of the homophobes who lost.

Pelosi signals fresh start on gay rights - The Detroit News Online:
Republican mudslingers digging deep into their anti-gay mud buckets to try to use Pelosi's gay friendliness to scare voters got a very clear message back: What really would have been spooky was leaving the current crop of Republicans in charge of Congress. Two of the most anti-gay Republicans -- Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who compared gay sex to 'man-on-dog' sex, and Rep. John Hostettler of Indiana, who tried to strip federal courts of authority over gay marriage -- got the voters' boot.

A big week...

This week has quite a lot of history for me in it. Every ten years I've gone through a significant experience during the first half of November. (I'll have to let my friend, the astrologer Eric Francis, know about this phenomenon.)

As I write this from the comfort of my own living room on a cold rainy night in Washington, there is an incredible activist making his way from Kansas City to this city, alone, in a borrowed car. It's the second leg of a trip that began in Tallahassee and tonight, as he crashes alone in a hotel room in Dayton, I hope you'll be grateful for him and the thousands of other activists across the country who will not miss a beat after the election.

Every activist needs
a megaphone

It's over 1,000 miles from Tallahassee to Kansas City. It's another 1,100 to DC, and later in the week, 900 miles home. THREE THOUSAND MILES in seven days, not for him alone, but for each and every person who believes in justice and equality for LGBT people.

Who is this activist? And why is this week so monumental? And, why is he holding that megaphone in his hand?

More on Tuesday....

CNN To AmericaBlog: Take Down Maher video outing Mehlman

AMERICAblog:
I just got a cease-and-desist letter from YouTube, see below, regarding my CNN footage I posted. The footage, you'll recall, was from Larry King Live last night in which Bill Maher outed Republican Party chair Ken Mehlman as gay. It seems that CNN has suddenly decided that it no longer wants bloggers, or YouTube, posting any of its video, which is kind of surprising since I always thought we were doing a CNN a favor by constantly touting their network. Apparently I was wrong.

Evangelical Leader: GOP Abandoned Voters - Newsday.com

Some of the most interesting work I've done has been to spend time making calls on behalf of the organization I founded, Proud Of Who We Are. It's been fascinating calling the pastors of mega churches around the country to educate them on the high number of closeted leaders there are in the leadership of conservative organizations.

Does Haggard come as a surprise? How can it when you realize that Phyllis Schlafley's chief lawyer is her gay son? In a world where a gay man is chief financial officer of Concerned Woman for America, is it that shocking when a Haggard comes along?

I actually have a lot of faith in the faith-based voters in this country. Those who fill the pews are not as bad as those who preach to them. They are merely being sold a product under false pretenses.

At least it's good to see some of them catching on.

Evangelical Leader: GOP Abandoned Voters:
Conservative Christian leader James Dobson accused the Republican Party of abandoning values voters in the midterm elections -- and paying the price by losing control of Congress. 'What did they do with their power?' Dobson said in a statement. 'Very little that values voters care about.'

Finger-pointing abounded in the days after Democrats seized control of Congress after 12 years in the minority. Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family, issued a statement railing against the Republicans for letting their majorities slip away.
I'm not done reaching out to these evangelical leaders just yet. Later today I'll let you know about a fun little project I'm engaged in.

Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R), who came up just short yesterday in his Senate race against Rep. Ben Cardin (D), is mulling a bid for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee, according to an informed GOP source.

Steele would not challenge current RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, but chatter among Republican insiders is that Mehlman has made clear for months that he might not return to his current post.
