Capitol Hill looks like Brokeback Mountain

Kevin Sites of Yahoo News filmed me a few months back for a project he was working on. The end result went up today and it's really awesome! You can see the People of the Web article and video here.

There's an article:

Wow. Fred Phelps and I find common ground

I normally don't run videos of Fred Phelps, but in this case I've found some common ground with the Westboro Quacko-Wacko. Some quotes:
  • "VP Dick Chaney and his goofy Lynne are Mr. and Mrs. anti-Christ America."
  • "...these two old fools."
  • "Lynne Cheney wrote a cheap pornographic novel"
  • "In 1995, then politically ambitious Dick Cheney, jawboned and browbeat Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward out of revealing that daughter Mary is a dyke."
  • "Lynne Cheney indignantly lied through her teeth"
  • "Our perverted Vice president Dick Cheney"
Want to see Fred deliver his latest rant? Here ya go:

History repeats itself

I was doing some research and poking around the Washington Post from 1894. Perhaps we should order up some of these for hypocritical closet cases.

Film at 11

Tonight, at 11pm EST, I am the guest co-host of the hour-long TV show from NYC, Gay USA. To watch the program visit the Manhattan Neighborhood Network and watch channel 34.

I had a great time filling in for co-host Andy Humm with Ann Northrop and guest Evan Wolfson of Freedom To Marry.

It's not you, Dave... It's 'those' gays...

Yesterday, the White House issued a photo of proud grandparents Lynne and Dick Cheney posing with their new grandson, Samuel David Cheney. It's yet another example of making gays and lesbians invisible. The officially released photo is of the grandparents with the baby? Huh? Where are the parents? Oh, that's right, they are two lesbians -- don't want to give me media that image to run.

The smiles (even Dick looks like he is trying to crack one), of course, are personal and show, once again, that while right wingers are supportive, even happy, when their gay and lesbian kids have kids, they never let those feelings spill over into the court of public discourse. Don't look for Fox News to ask Dick how he reconciles his love of his new grandson with his administration's support of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and don't expect Dick to speak out against Bush's threatened veto of the hate crimes law.

What the right refers to as "the politics of personal destruction" is just code for "despite my personal feelings, don't hold me personally accountable for what I may say or do in the public sphere."

It's really bad when straight people (although, based on her writings, the questions about Lynne linger) use gay people to gain power and then turn around and treat those closest to them with respect. It's a double standard that I can't even understand how Mary can live with.

When the person doing the bashing is gay, it's even worse. Just ask anyone who watches Fox News. Fox News is chock full of closet cases who help to promote homophobia. Just look at Shepard Smith. He is one of the examples of self-hate at Fox.

In some ways, although I am hard pressed to exactly say why, gay men and lesbians who are out of the closet in these places are even worse to me than the closet cases. They fly in the face of the facts and, because they are accepted as individuals, they are able to be complicit in the hate spewed on a greater scale. Take a look at David Brown. In a lengthy article on AfterElton.com. David, who works as a producer for the notoriously homophobic Fox News Channel, is able to justify his employer. How? Well, they like David personally AND they sent a few people to the NLGJA conference. BFD.

Brown is executive producer of Fox's morning show Fox & Friends. From AfterElton:
Brown has worked closely with Fox News CEO and chairman Roger Ailes since two years before the Fox News Channel began, and has been with FNC since its inception. Brown said he's been out to Ailes throughout that entire time and that Ailes has no issue with it. As Brown describes their relationship: "Loved me. I love him."

And Brown said that working with Ailes so closely, "He's your buddy, he's not just your boss. It's wonderful, I got to know him on a different level than a lot of people might have, and he's just a great guy."

As for family-values conservative Sean Hannity, Brown said, "Sean and I love each other." As to whether Hannity has an issue with Brown being gay, Brown said: "I'm Dave and he's Sean, and the show is good, or the show is bad. There is no gay issue." Brown insisted it's like that across the board at Fox, and said that at monthly NLGJA mixers at a local New York gay club, Fox News journalists are "always the largest contingent."
I don't know Brown's political leanings, but like gay Republicans, he could care less about the gay community at large. He has his high paying job, gets to drink at NLGJA events and even gets sent to a conference by Fox. Woo Hoo! As for David's claim that Fox staffers are the largest contingent at the monthly NLGJA social hour, of course they are the largest contingent...They are starved for positive portrayals of gays in the media world, something they are not getting at work...all you need to do is turn on Fox News to know that.

In the article Brown defends those in the media who remain in the closet:
"They've got mortgages to pay," he said. "And if they're scared, or, you know … look, there's a lot of actors in Hollywood who won't come out. So it's the same sort of mentality across the board."
Actually, Dave, it's not the same. While I encourage everyone to come out, it's a big stretch to say that an actor staying the closet is the same as a gay man who is aiding and abetting the hate on Fox News. Given the choice to be friends with an out Fox News staffer or a closeted Hollywood actor, I'd choose the actor every time.

Activists poised to out chair of NY State Assembly Judiciary Committee

According to today's New York Post, New York based activists are poised to 'out' a New York Assembly member who is in a powerful position to move the state's marriage equality bill forward.

Here is the item from the New York Post:

Although not disclosed in the Post, BlogActive has learned that the targeted member of the Assembly is Brooklyn Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein (D). The same activists have taken an ad in New York's Gay City News pressuring Weinstein and others on the committee to support marriage equality. The advertisement does not identify Weinstein as closeted. Numerous activists and political sources in calls and emails with BlogActive have confirmed that Weinstein is the Assemblywoman mentioned in the New York Post item.

With just weeks to go in the Assembly session, the bill, supported by NY Governor Elliott Spitzer, is in danger of dying. The activists are calling upon individuals to call Weinstein's office. BlogActive readers can take action using a keyboard and mouse to email Weinstein and the members of the committee (below). Here is the call to action from the activist ad:

I am pretty proud of this...

My first post, has little to do with the mission of BlogActive, but I'm excited to now be a blogger at The Huffington Post.

I wrote a bit about the laws which limit the height of building's in Washington, DC and how changing the law could have unintended political consequences.

I hope you'll take a read and let me know what you think.

Patrick McHenry will blame liberals and Democrats for exposing McHenrygate. After all, this is the guy who blamed Foleygate on Pelosi.

Then comes this document dump, showing complaints filed by the former chairman of the Burke County REPUBLICANS!

Not just one voter in question at Rep. Patrick McHenry's house!

[Research for this story provided by Muriel Kane.]

Update: Matt at InterstateQ, one of my favorite sites, has the latest on McHenry's nighttime buddy.

CBS News reported today that Michael Aaron Lay, an aide to (the unmarried) Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), was arrested on voter fraud charges.

There is more to the story than you're reading in the CBS news item. LOTS MORE.

First here's the item from CBS on Lay:
The indictment charges that Michael Aaron Lay, 26, illegally cast his ballot in two 2004 Congressional primary run-offs in which McHenry was a candidate. The charges indicate that Lay voted in a district where it was not legal for him to vote.

At the time Lay was listed as a resident in a home owned by 32-year-old McHenry but campaign records indicate Lay's paychecks were sent to an address in Tennessee. McHenry won the primary by only 86 votes. According to Gaston County, North Carolina District Attorney Locke Bell, Lay was indicted on Monday, May 7 by a local grand jury.
Before I get into the other angles...Here's a copy of the voter registration information on Michael Aaron Lay:

Here is the voting, showing the only time Lay voted in the District was during McHenry's first campaign:

AT THE SAME TIME, he was registered to vote in NC, here's four of the many payment entries from McHenry's FEC reports, where he is paid at a Tennessee address:

That is where the CBS Story ends... But, look, there's more!

Here is the registration for ANOTHER person on McHenry's staff, Jason Jent Deans, who registered in the district and was paid at another address. And get this, he registered to vote on June 11, 2004, just before the same primaries that the now-indicted Mr. Lay voted in.

Here's an archived copy of Deans's registration and voting record. He voted in McHenry's district in '06. The registration record is from the NC voter records site, and was on line as late as October of '06, when it was provided to me:

What was Mr. Deans getting paid for in 2004? Working for the McHenry campaign. AND... at different address than his registration! Here are some of the FEC reports on Jason Jent Deans showing him being paid in a different city from his voter registration:

If you need more on Mr. Deans, get this: he RECENTLY changed his voter registration location. Could it be that he was aware of the CBS story or the forthcoming indictments against Lay? Here's the latest registration for Mr. Deans:

There's more...A lot more!

Want more? Yet ANOTHER person registered at the address just before McHenry's first election. While the NC election records indicate that Matthew Allen Hamilton registered to vote at the address in October 29, 1998, just before election day. He didn't vote in that election and did not start voting until November of 2002, four years after he registered. Interestingly, the only primaries he voted in were the ones in which McHenry ran, including a runoff in August of '04:

And in that tightly fought primary in '04, Hamilton voted by absentee ballot:

Could there be MORE people at the address? Um, yup!

Get this! On June 23, 2004 Neil Everett Capano also registered at 1100 Requa Road, McHenry's pad:

I mean, enough already!

The funny thing about McHenry is this: I've received tons of tips from across the state, including one from an elected official who told me, "I can tell you Patrick McHenry is gay. I've known him long enough to know."

Now, I'm not saying he is gay, but he does seem to like engaging with Barney Frank. If you have not seen the video of their exchange, it's priceless.

And on Thursday, McHenry refers to Congresswoman Ellen Taucher as a man. It seems clear to me that Patrick has some serious gender identity issues.

In typical form, is it any wonder that Patrick McHenry was the Republican attack dog against the Democrats on Foleygate? What is really funny here, is how he tries to call Foley an "obscure congressman from Florida." Check this video out:

Self-loathing homophobe...helped commit election fundraising violations

Less than one week after this blog started, I reported on the danger Kirk Fordham was to the gay community. Fordham, who went on to become a central figure in Foley-gate (going so far as to negotiate with ABC news to control the Foley story), served as the finance director of homophobic Sen. Mel Martinez's (R-FL) 2004 campaign.

Martinez, you may recall, ran ads on Florida radio that said allowing gay people to marry was similar to living under Castro's totalitarian rule. Is it any wonder he had to steal his way into the Senate...at least he is consistent with his party's M.O.

To me it seems that Fordham probably had his hand in all the misreporting. If he claims he didn't then he's a man not in control of the very things he was hired for. Sounds like a lose/lose to me for him.

From Citizens for Responsible Ethics in Washington:

The Audit Division also found that Martinez for Senate accepted $313,325 in excessive contributions. Virtually all of those illegal funds were spent by Martinez for Senate in order to win the 2004 general election when, in fact, they should not have been available for use. Additionally, in the twenty days before the 2004 general election, Martinez for Senate received, but failed to disclose, $140,514 in contributions.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW, said today, “The violations committed by Martinez for Senate are unprecedented in both size and scope.” Sloan continued, “Basically, Mel Martinez broke the law in order to win an election. Now, years later, he is a sitting Senator and the chairman of the Republican National Committee. A failure by the FEC to severely sanction the Martinez for Senate campaign committee will demonstrate that violating the law pays.”

CREW hopes to see the FEC sanction the campaign committee for the amount of the violations, nearly $800,000.

Sexism on the floor of Congress

I always thought McHenry had a high pitch to his voice... Perhaps he has gender identity issues himself?

Think Progress has the video
Peeved McHenry refers to congresswoman as a ‘man.’
:
During floor debate yesterday, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) repeatedly referred to Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) as a “man.” McHenry appeared to be upset when Tauscher, who was presiding as chairwoman, chose not to recognize him until other members in the chamber stopped chatting. McHenry shouted out to Tauscher:

Madam Chairman, Madam Chairwoman? Madam Chair? Madam Chairman? Madam Chairperson? Madam Chairwoman?

After a few moments, Tauscher recognized McHenry. “For what purpose does the gentleman from North Carolina rise?”

Watch it here.

A new blog

This could become a very important site. Chris aims to collect the experiences of those who have been victims of attacks:
My goal in writing this, and in creating this blog, is to put another face to this blight on our national consciousness. I want to inspire others to share their stories and photographs, to build an online community of survivors, and those whose lives were taken in hatred. I want to incite more visibility, media coverage and debate on what should be national goals of inclusion, tolerance, love and acceptance.

Remember the gang of 14?

Remember the gang of 14 Democrats who voted that Matthew Shephard's and Michael Sandy's murders are not the kind of crime that should be covered under the federal hate crimes law? Well, it ends up that one is a blatant liar.

Fortunately, with the margin we have in the House, we can work to defeat this one-termer as a lesson for the others who won't play ball. Democrats need to start playing like their GOP counterparts. Apparently, this lying pig is not aware of the role the gay netroots and activists played in helping to oust Ricky Santorum.

Howie Klein is not happy:
So weren't we in for a surprise a few days ago when Congressman Carney joined 13 of the most die-hard reactionary Democrats in the House-- near-Republicans who almost always support a reactionary social agenda-- to vote against the Hate Crimes bill. The bill passed 237-180 and all but 14 Democrats supported... well, supported exactly what Carney promised in his campaign he would support, "that crimes based on gender, sexual orientation, and disability be prosecuted as federal hate crimes." I felt betrayed-- like I had been kicked in the stomach. Based on my research and interview with candidate Carney, Blue America had endorsed him and hundreds of our members had donated effort and money to his campaign. Some of these donors are members of the GLBT community and others have friends and family who are part of that community and others just like to think that the candidates they contribute to will support equality as a core value. Chris Carney let us down, violently.
Howie's readers are not too happy either:
Now that you have voted, with some of the most reactionary Democrats in the House of Representatives, against the Hate Crimes Bill, I have reconsidered my previous support of your campaign. I would like to have my contributions returned, please. I am disabled and on a fixed income. I can only support candidates who support gay rights and, more importantly, keep their word to me and to those I trust to evaluate candidates.

From the truth is stranger than ficton dept.

As a non-Christian I'm quite tired of all the religious shit tied to the government, so I am kinda glad that no one (well, I'm not counting those who used the chairs to eat lunch) took a seat at another religious event at the Capitol.
Dozens of Heads Were Bowed:

Let us pray.

Let us pray that, on next year's National Day of Prayer, there is better attendance at the "Bible Reading Marathon" on the West Front of the Capitol.

Organizers put out 600 folding chairs on the lawn -- the spot where presidents are inaugurated -- and set up a huge stage with powerful amplifiers. But at 9:30 a.m. yesterday, not one of the 600 seats was occupied. By 11 a.m., as a woman read a passage from Revelations, attendance had grown -- to four people. Finally, at 1 p.m., 37 of the 600 seats were occupied, though many of those people were tourists eating lunch.

Where was everybody?

'This isn't that kind of event,' explained Jeff Gannon, spokesman for the host, the International Bible Reading Association. Gannon, actually a pseudonym for James Guckert, had earned fame in 2005 representing a conservative Web site at White House briefings until it was revealed that he posted nude pictures of himself on the Web to offer his services as a $200-an-hour gay escort.

Let us pray for the power to understand how Gannon made his way from HotMilitaryStud.com to the International Bible Reading Association.

In six-and-a-half spectacular years in office, Our Leader has vetoed exactly two bills and is now ready to veto a third. What three things in the whole world did George want to veto?
* Curing old people of Alzheimer’s.
* Ending the slaughter of Americans in Iraq.
* Making the killing of gays a crime.
It’s a legacy!

An outing leads to an oil executive's resignation

I used to work at Greenpeace, so I'm no fan of oil companies. That being said, BP seems to be one of the better ones. Imagine that, a gay person with more respect for the world than some right wing homophobe.

What a shame that this led to a resignation. Some have told me that it was more about his lie than his being gay. Hmmmmmm, I'm not so sure I buy it.

BP's Browne resigns after private life exposed
Oil major BP Plc said Chief Executive John Browne had resigned with immediate effect after a UK court lifted an injunction preventing a newspaper group from publishing details about his private life.

'In my 41 years with BP I have kept my private life separate from my business life,' Browne said in a statement on Tuesday.

'I have always regarded my sexuality as a personal matter, to be kept private. It is a matter of deep disappointment that a newspaper group has now decided that allegations about my personal life should be made public,' he added.

Browne said he had had a four-year relationship with Canadian citizen Jeff Chevalier who had told his story to Associated Newspapers , publishers of the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and Evening Standard.
