Barney Frank gets rough with Patrick McHenry

Poor Representative McPipsqueak. I KNOW folks in Patrick McHenry's office read my blog. Hey guys!
(See the story on his aide being arrested for voter fraud here.)

From The Politico:

Flake screws McHenry

Republican Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona — with the help of plenty of Democrats — just screwed his GOP colleague Patrick McHenry out of earmarked money for a project in the latter's western North Carolina district.

It is the first amendment Flake has ever passed to strip money from the annual spending bills.

"Congressman Flake didn't think he'd bring down his first earmark with friendly fire," remarked his spokesman Matthew Specht.

Flake succeeded by winning over Democrats who usually vote against him. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) explained why he had made an exception in this case.

"It was resentment over his hypocrisy in leading the fight against earmarks and then offering one of lesser value," Frank said. "I think penalizing hypocrisy is a legitimate response in politics."

Many Democrats have a particular dislike for McHenry's biting floor speeches. Flake's amendment gave them an opportunity for revenge.

DATELINE: MANCHESTER

As the owner of womenforgore.com and gaysforgore.com, this is welcomed news:

Clinton in the lead (unless Gore runs?); McCain, Giuliani slip in GOP survey:
Al Gore, however, could enter the race as the leader. When his name is added, Clinton loses more than a quarter of her support, while Gore is backed by 32 percent.

Thanks, Michael

A fellow blogger, Michael Crawford of Bloggernista, gave me a "Thinking Blogger" award. I'm usually skeptical of awards on blogs, as they seem more about generating votes than awarding quality writing. This award is a bit different. You "win" one when another blog decides you make them think. In turn, once you receive a Thinking Blogger award, you are encouraged to share five other blogs that make you think.

Like Michael's list, my list skews toward gay sites...not entirely, but mostly. The rules of the award are pretty simple:
1. If, and only if you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think.
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme.
3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote.
Here's my list of five blogs that make me think (in alpha order, of course):

Culture Kitchen - Liza's spot (and a host of other bloggers) give interesting commentary on things political...and everything else.

Pam's House Blend - I'm gay. I'm progressive. Enough said.

Rod 2.0 - Rod McCullom has done the MSM thing (he was a producer at NBC and ABC News), he's written cover stories for the Advocate, and he has a killer blog at Rod 2.0. Look to Rod to provide insightful commentary on the '08 election. Rod wrote "Behind the Friendly Faces" an Advocate cover story on Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama.

Scholars and Rogues - It's an interesting mix of posters in a community blog format. The bloggers are brilliant and Nick has some really great cartoons.

Suburban Guerrilla - Susie Madrak puts a new twist on liberal politics. Her outsiders week this week will bring other voices to the site. Look for my guest post there later in the week.

A life without fair courts: Views from cartoonists

Something funny is going on over at Lambda Legal. And by "funny," I mean in a good way. Lambda has posted the final round of voting in their LIFE WITHOUT FAIR COURTS cartoon contest. There are five finalists, each one is a very talented cartoonist...I had trouble picking one over others.

Lambda has grown quite a bit since I first became aware of them in 1989. The organization has been involved in a slew of court victories on behalf of the LGBT community, including Lawrence v. Texas, and Romer v. Evans. These cases are the two most important legal gay rights victory in American history. Check out the cartoon contest and Lambda's site here and don't forget to vote.

Outed Assembly Chairwoman votes for marriage equality

I recently wrote about activists in New York targeting a woman they said was a closeted lesbian and chair of the State Assembly's Judiciary Committee. Activists in NY pressured her via advertising and telephone campaigns. BlogActive readers sent tons of email to members of her committee informing them of the campaign and to ask them to support marriage equality.

Well, all of a sudden, the committee voted to move the bill. From Gay City News:
In a straight party-line vote, the Judiciary Committee of the New York State Assembly this afternoon approved the marriage equality bill introduced by Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer in April and sponsored by Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell and Senator Tom Duane.

The favorable vote out of Judiciary is a strong predictor that the full Assembly will approve the measure later this week.
And how did Chairwoman Weinstein vote?
Specifically, four of the Democrats who supported the measure today - Helene Weinstein of Queens, the Committee chair; Peter Rivera of the Bronx; Michele Titus of Queens; and Kenneth Zebrowski, Jr., of Rockland County - were all to-date publicly neutral. The shift of four Democrats in a group of 16 confirms the party's coalescence around the measure.
Congratulations to those fighting for marriage equality in NY, my home state.

I think Matt gets it right...

I got a lot of mail and comments over my post on Tyler Whitney. Contrary to what some of you wrote, I did NOT out Tyler Whitney. As I wrote the other day, the reason I wrote about him was because his sexual orientation was reported on much larger press outlets than this blog.

I did explain how I would be conflicted, considering Whitney's actions and his age, but I never said I would have broken the news and after a lot of thought, I am certain I would not have.

In every case I have reported on here, I have spoken with others who are in similar circumstances as the person of interest on the site. And, if I didn't immediately make the decision to not look at this case, I certainly would have turned to young activists for advice; activists like Matt Hill Comer.

I have mentioned Matt site, InterstateQ, before. Matt, 21, recently completed the Equality Ride, traveling the country to educate college students at anti-gay schools about LGBT lives. Matt writes on his site:
The gay and political blogospheres have been abuzz with “news” of the “outing” of 18 year old Tyler Whitney, a staffer and webmaster for the Republican Tom Tancredo’s campaign for the Presidency.
...
I say, give the kid a freakin’ break. Yeah… “kid.” Let’s not forget the boy is only 18 years old. Fresh out of high school.
I especially appreciated how Matt acknowledged that he too, at 21, is still "growing, maturing and figuring out who he is." This perspective, I believe gives added strength to Matt's argument. I know when I was 21 I thought I knew everything.

I'm not saying it's time to give some award to Mr. Whitney, but what was a teachable moment for our community has become a series of attacks on an 18 year old over his sexual orientation and that's just not right.

Tom Tancredo's webmaster is outed in Michigan paper

Michigan's Between The Lines News has reported on the planned coming out of Tyler Whitney, webmaster for Rep. Tom Tancredo's presidential run. Whitney is an 18-year old conservative (and I mean CONSERVATIVE!). Tom Tancredo's Human Rights Campaign rating? Zero.

Whitney

This Whitney guy is a real winner. Check out his Myspace account. And check out the entire list of endorsers he's on. It looks like the typical crowd at Manhattan's Splash Bar on a Friday after work.

However, especially when dealing with an 18-year old, it's important to review when it is appropriate or inappropriate "out" a political worker. While there is no list of rules to refer to, I do take into consideration what is often referred to as "the Barney Frank rule." On Bill Maher he defined the rule this way:
...I think there’s a right to privacy. But the right to privacy should not be a right to hypocrisy ... people who want to demonize other people shouldn't then be able to go home and close the door, and do it themselves.
There are, of course, other considerations I take into account. For staffers, age and role in the campaign or organization play a key part in my thinking. Those who are young are still often in the process of defining themselves politically (I know I don't want to be held to account for everything I thought at 18).

To date, I have passed on reporting on people this young. And I only write about Whitney here because his name has appeared in much larger venues that this blog. In this case, I can see why people think this guy should have been outed. And, you can what Michelangelo Signorile has to say about Whitney here.

I feel sad for Whitney and I worry what he might do. Up to 1/2 of teen suicides are of gay and lesbian teenagers struggling with their own sexual orientation. On the other hand, it would be wonderful for this obviously politically talented young man to dedicate his energies to politicians and operations that respect him as an equal member of society.

As always happens, I imagine that Mr. Whitney will not have much luck in continuing employment in their deceptively named "big tent."

Maybe Ken Mehlman can give him a hand.

Gutsy ads

My friend Darryl once shared an African proverb with me: If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room. I like the concept because I believe that to have real change it's important to be at the edge, constantly pushing back on the boundaries which have been set upon us against our own will.

I really like how Freedom to Marry is approaching the 40th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia case. They are pushing back at folks in politics on marriage equality. For those not familiar with the case, in 1967 the US Supreme Court ruled that laws prohibiting interracial marriages were unconstitutional. In 1966 it would have been illegal for Jeb Bush to have married his wife. I love how these ads show politicians how real lives are affected by their campaign for unjust treatment of gays and lesbians.

There are five different ads. You can see Freedom to Marry's page on the Loving vs. Virginia case and the ads here.

Larry gets leads....

A few days back, Larry Flynt offered a million dollars for information on the sexual hypocrisy of members of congress. I'm glad that someone with tips is coming forward:

From SFgate:
Flynt said he expects "2 to 4 percent" of the leads to develop into solid publishable information and wouldn't name names; but he's looking into, among others, "a couple of (congressmen) who are gay and they're voting against every piece of legislation that would adversely affect gays."

It's the 110th Congress and I need your help

Greetings.

The blog got a lot of exposure recently. Yahoo! News do that fantastic profile and then USA Today did a piece on Yahoo's new People of the Web series and included a link to the original piece. If you haven't seen it, click here.

When the site is seen by new audiences, new tips come in, lots of them. I am already hard at work looking at cases I was not familiar with and continuing to work on open cases. I now have reasons to believe there are three new cases in the House and two in the Senate. Additionally, I have received information AND a source interested in talking on the record, of a high level political appointee.

I have also been tipped off on a case involving one of the most successful businessmen responsible for much of the anti-gay political messaging in America. I'll be meeting with some sources in a couple of weeks and hope to report on this case then.

I can't do it alone. I need your help. Last year, this work resulted in media as wide ranging as CNN, FoxNews, the Associated Press and many more (you can see links to the site's media and video here,)

I need to take four trips to meet with tipsters and sources, and, as I gear up for work related to the upcoming political season in the fall, I need to prepare to cover the stories. Without getting too specific, I'll be heading tho three regions in the country. The Pacific Northwest, Deep South, and Midwest. In each of these places I will be meeting with sources who claim to have personal knowledge of activities on persons of interest to this site. With you support, I am confident at least one of these trips will be successful and result in the exposure of hypocrisy at the highest levels of government. Clicking here and making a gift to the blog will help make this research happen.

Regular readers know that I do not ask for contributions very often and only to help with the expenses of the site's investigative work. I hope you will consider supporting the work of BlogActive. Without your help, I can't do the necessary work to continue this the site's mission. I hope you will believe in its importance enough to make a donation today.

Thanks!

Elizabeth Edwards blows it on Blitzer

Political consultant Bob Shrum (who has an real talent for losing presidential elections) has written a book in which he claims John Edwards said he was ' non comfortable' around gays.

On Blitzer today Edwards's wife Elizabeth gave some long answer on the allegation and, frankly, she looked quite uncomfortable. She proceeded to give some explanation about how Edwards was not uncomfortable with gays, but with the notion that Elizabeth's gay friend from college thought he was attractive. Huh?

What she should have said: "Wolf, you are talking about a period of time a decade ago and as you know, times have changed. In that time, as you know from your questioning him a few months ago, the Vice President's daughter and her partner have just given birth to a baby boy. Times change Wolf and perhaps you and the media can stop using the lesbian and gay community to divide the electorate. Next question."

Larry Flynt offers $1 million

Hustler offers $1 million for sex smut on Congress:
Hustler magazine is looking for some scandalous sex in Washington again -- and willing to pay for it.

"Have you had a sexual encounter with a current member of the United States Congress or a high-ranking government official?" read a full-page advertisement taken out by Larry Flynt's pornographic magazine in Sunday's Washington Post.

It offered $1 million for documented evidence of illicit intimate relations with a congressman, senator or other prominent officeholder. A toll-free number and e-mail address were provided.
Larry has written about Larry Craig. From Larry Flynt's site:
Impeach The Bastard!

ASSHOLE OF THE MONTH: Larry Craig

Hypocritical Idaho Senator Larry Craig is the latest GOP politician accused of privately practicing homosexuality while publicly opposing gay rights. Craig formerly held the Senate’s fourth-highest leadership position, once sat on the National Rifle Association’s board and voted for federal and state measures banning same-sex marriage. But now—like his fellow Republican, ex-Congressman Mark Foley of Florida—Craig has been accused of fooling around with the male of the species.

In November ’06, Mike Rogers—whom liberal talk show host Ed Schultz called the “top activist gay blogger”—appeared on Big Eddie’s nationally syndicated radio program and claimed that at least three men had had homosexual relations with Senator Craig. Two of the encounters reportedly took place in the Pacific Northwest. (With Mounties?) Craig allegedly had liaisons with a third man in bathrooms at Washington, D.C.’s Union Station. (Choo-choo! All aboard!) The gay journalist added that none of the men said to have been involved were minors and that all requested anonymity.
