US Congressman owned home with another man, took DC tax deduction while voting in NC
by Michael Rogers and Leslie Bland

For the complete story, visit PageOneQ.com and read:Congressman Patrick T. McHenry (R-NC), right, purchased a residence in Washington, DC's Capital Hill neighborhood with another man, PageOneQ has learned. While he owned the home, McHenry and co-owner Scott G. Stewart claimed eligibility for the District of Columbia's Homestead Tax Deduction, a tax reduction program to encourage homeownership and residence in DC. At the same time McHenry was registered to vote, and did so, in Gaston County, North Carolina.
According to records obtained from the Washington, DC Recorder of Deeds, left (click to enlarge), McHenry, who was first elected to Congress in 2004, and Stewart owned the three bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home from February 2001 to January 2002. The house is located at 1360 D Street, SE, in a neighborhood near the US Capitol.
The DC Recorder of Deeds told PageOneQ that McHenry and Stewart received a $60,000 deduction off the property's assessed value for tax reduction purposes in the second half of 2001. In order to receive the tax reduction, homeowners are required to certify that the property is "occupied by the owner/applicant." The eligibility guidelines state that the "property must be the principal residence (domicile) of the owner/applicant."

A self-loathing Senator votes against hate crimes

The things Nick finds
Oh, He's not leaving:
Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) will not abandon his Senate seat until a Minnesota judge determines whether or not the senator's guilty plea in connection to soliciting sex from an undercover police officer should be overturned, according to CNN. Arguments in the case were presented Wednesday afternoon.
Craig had originally announced he would step down by Sept. 30 if the plea was not thrown out, but on Tuesday he said he had no plans to vacate until "legal determinations" were made.

David Dreier: Get Over Drag
CBSNews.com: As I've talked to a number of social conservative leaders, some of whom are supporters and some not, they keep coming back to the fact that he cross-dressed a lot as mayor of New York. And that when he was going through a divorce, he lived with an openly gay couple, that he supports gay rights. Do you think that will hurt him in Republican primaries?Perhaps it's because of this... The Roy Cohn Award earned by Dreier back in '04:
David Dreier: I really don't. I mean, people know this guy was mayor of New York. The city was five to one, Democrat to Republican. And he has a great sense of humor. And you know, he is, from my perspective, very libertarian in his views, which I believe happens to be the core view that Republicans have.
He's made it clear that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. That's where he is on this. But he's a supporter of the notion of civil unions. George W. Bush is in that exact same position on this issue.
And I will say that the notion of cross dressing, good heavens. I mean, it was all a skit. I told people to relax a bit and realize that having someone who has a great sense of humor is a healthy good thing for our country.

McHenry's conservative roots exposed
Ever wonder where all these repressed Republican sex offenders learn how to be so repressed and offensive? Well, I'm starting to get the impression that their training comes from the finest conservative institutions of higher learning.Recently someone emailed me about predatory gays at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University in Virginia. When I posted it, I started hearing all about Patrick McHenry's alma mater, Belmont Abbey College.
Check this out:
While Congressman Pat McHenry was a student there, in the late 1990s, Belmont Abbey College officials knowingly hired as head of its theology department an accused sex offender who had been relieved of his Massachusetts responsibilities. When confronted by the press they lied about it. The truth came out in depositions by Boston's then-Cardinal Bernard Law that officials at Belmont Abbey had been informed that Geroge P. Berthold was dismissed due to such accusations. But the Abbey officials lied about this until the truth came out.
And Creative Loafing Charlotte uncovered this juicy tidbit: between 1995 and 2003, the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte paid $500,000 to local victims of sexual abuse.
So, let's recap: Paying people off, not reporting the abusers, hiring abusers from elsewhere, then lying about knowingly hiring abusers. That's the atmosphere at Pat McHenry's college, from which he was graduated not all that long ago. Gee, do you think he might have learned even more at that Benedictine Abbey in Mt. Holly, North Carolina?
Supporting material:
From Creative Loafing Charlotte:
Since 1995, the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte has paid nearly a half-million dollars to local victims of alleged sexual abuse. The carefully worded disclosure was buried in its 2001-2002 annual report at the end of a description of its policy on protecting young people from sexual abuse.By our deadline on Monday, diocese spokesperson Kevin Murray was still trying to determine how many victims had received the money and the date of the alleged incidents for which they were paid. The report, which was issued in November, states that no payments were made during the last year on behalf of victims of clergy sexual misconduct with children.Boston Globe:
The Archdiocese of Boston yesterday contradicted a statement by Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina that it was told nothing about allegations of inappropriate intimate contact against a Boston priest, the Rev. George P. Berthold, before the college hired him in 1997 to head its theology department.May 18, 2002 Boston Globe
Donna M. Morrissey, the spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said that church officials in Boston had notified the college and the Diocese of Charlotte ''verbally and in writing'' that Berthold had been accused of inappropriate physical behavior with adult seminarians when he was dean of the undergraduate college at St. John's Seminary in 1995.
The head of a Catholic college in North Carolina acknowledged yesterday that the Archdiocese of Boston did inform him of an allegation of inappropriate behavior against a priest seeking a teaching job at the school.Record of Berthold's placements.
Abbot Placid Solari, of Belmont Abbey College near Charlotte, said yesterday that the Boston Archdiocese had told him that an "allegation of improper conduct" had been lodged against the Rev. George Berthold while he was a dean at St. John's Seminary in Boston.
School officials earlier this week said that the Boston Archdiocese told them nothing about the allegation before the college hired Berthold in 1997 to head its theology department.

Last week, CL requested police report numbers, or other evidence documenting that the diocese had reported the alleged abuse referred to in the report to civil authorities. It was also unclear Monday whether the alleged abusers are still actively working or volunteering for the diocese.Photo: Congressman Pat McHenry with Belmont Abbey College Chancellor Placid Solari.

Right wing anti-gay presidential candidate sings gay national anthem

...and described Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter Mary as a "selfish hedonist." After his own daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, announced she was a lesbian, she said he stopped funding her college education.

Is this a case of the lady doth protest too much? (Being gay is genetic....hmmmmm)
A governor is two-faced
From The Washington Blade:
As Maryland gays mourned Tuesday’s high court ruling upholding a ban on same-sex marriage, some said they were equally stunned and upset by the remarks of Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley, who in private, had repeatedly assured plaintiffs in the case that he supports gay unions. On the Blade's Blog, editor Kevin Naff writes:
Hat tip: BlogActive reader Lisa...thanks!Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is the new Mitt Romney.
Just when you thought a politician could sink no lower in the duplicitous art of flip-flopping comes the hidden tale of how O'Malley assured gay rights activists and plaintiffs in the Maryland marriage case that he supported same-sex marriage, only to reverse course and ultimately invoke his Catholic religious beliefs to justify his support of discrimination.
It’s an all-too-familiar story of a Democratic candidate promising to stand up for an all-too-loyal gay constituency, then kicking us when we’re down.

A conservative does the right thing

A reader writes in:
I think it would be honorable to point out that the San Diego Mayor, Jerry sanders, recently changed his position on gay marriage. You should applaud himThe writer is right.
From Raw Story:
The Republican mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders, announced in a highly emotional speech on Wednesday that he had decided not to veto a council resolution that would have reversed California's ban on same sex unions. "My opinions on this issue have evolved significantly," he stated "as I think the opinions of millions of Americans from all walks of life have."Sanders, who was police chief before becoming mayor, had originally intended to veto the resolution in order to remain consistent with his campaign promises and with the sentiment of most of his supporters, and he changed his mind only at the last minute.
"The arrival of the resolution to sign or veto in my office late last night," said Sanders, choking up with emotion, "forced me to reflect and search my soul for the right thing to do. I've decided to lead with my heart ... and to take a stand on behalf of equality and social justice."

HRC stands with Jena 6
This is not a good thing...it's a GREAT thing. I'm really proud of HRC for bringing Joe Solmonese and a group of staffers to Jena, Louisiana.
Joe's remarks at the rally (via HRC Backstory):My name is Joe Solmonese and I represent the largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organization in the country. Am I am here -- we are all here from the Human Rights Campaign -- because this injustice cannot stand.
We are here because we know about bigotry. We know about hate. We know the pain in high school of standing apart. Of being taunted. Of standing up, only too often, to be shut down.
I am here -- we are here -- because you have stood with us. Because all of us know that one injustice against any of us is an injustice against all of us.
And I am here because I remember. I remember James Byrd. James was a gentle soul, a special soul. Someone who struggled his whole life with challenges, but was filled with love and was deeply loved in Jasper, Texas.
But James Byrd -- at 49 -- was savagely beaten, then chained to a pickup truck and literally dragged to his death. He was brutally murdered because he was black.
And then something really profound happened. Remember when George Bush was governor of Texas? Well, Governor Bush had a hate crimes bill on his desk. There was a lot of pressure to sign the bill because of what they did to James Byrd. So, George Bush said he'd sign that bill, but they had to take the gays out.
And here's what happened. Stella Byrd, who has just buried her beaten, broken, gentle James said, If some of us are left out, then all of us are. Valuing one life and not valuing another is not right. And the Byrd family said No. They said No. And they walked away.
So, I stand here today with solidarity. I stand here for social justice. I stand here to free those young men. To say this will not stand. It cannot stand. I stand here for the Jena 6. I stand here today for James Byrd.
We will not forget. We will never walk away.
Thank you very much.

Pat McHenry (NC-10): the overview
Mike and I finally had a long overdue sit-down today. For three hours I delineated all the current well-sourced and not-so-well sourced dirt on our youngest Congressman, Pat McHenry of North Carolina's 1oth Congressional district.(And we didn't even get to his advocacy for ousted College Republican Glenn Murphy, giver of unwanted blowjobs . . . how could we have overlooked that one, Mike?)
Mike tried to chart all of it. He really did. What happened to that chart, Mike? I seem to have misplaced it. It's not on my "action plan." Well, I guess mere words will have to do. (Leslie, that chart was so complicated I need a computer program to decipher it! - MR)
To start with, we've got several financial disclosure reporting irregularities (details to come on that), and nearly $200,000 of improperly reported 527 (Citizens Club for Growth PAC) funding in 2004. Also, Pat takes money from the gay Republican message master Arthur Finkelstein, who is married to a man in Massachusetts, as he foments ill will towards gays in his district and promotes the "sanctity of marriage."
Then there's a wide assortment of unsavory colleagues, high-level staff with drinking and assorting driving problems (below). Three different documented voter fraud cases starting with his former roomie and staffer. Then there's the repeated co-habitation with men well past his college years (We'll have a very interesting story related to that in the next week or so).For this post, I don't want to make only promises, I start with Pat's current campaign spokesman Jason Jent Deans, left. He was Pat's chief of staff from May, 2005 to January 2007. Before that he worked as District Director and on the campaign staff. This is what we've uncovered of the vehicular charges he's faced in North Carolina since 1995 . . . Including death by vehicle.

A dangerous combo

Raw Story's Larisa Alexandrovna and I met up at Washington, DC's The Diner. Before Larisa ended in the hospital (you can read about that here), we had a bit of time to plot and scheme on stories brewing in DC. (FYI: Love Larisa, HATE the picture.)
I don't want to scare anyone, but if you are considering a job as an intelligence propagandist in the Bush Administration and/or launching anti-gay, closeted political career.... Larisa and I probably talked about you at The Diner. (Larisa says the NSA probably knows also, now)
Best Friends Forever....
Lindsey has something to say:Craig’s homecoming began in a morning encounter near the members’ dining room, where he crossed paths with a surprised but cordial Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). If Graham was jarred by the arrival of Craig, a onetime ally whom most Republicans have given up for dead politically, he did not show it.
“I like Larry,” Graham told reporters. “It’s not a personal thing.”

The house is Rice and Bean's
Are you done laughing? Because, while it certainly has its funny side, it's really just another example of the hypocrisy of another conservative politician.
Secretary of State Condi Rice and another woman, documentary filmmaker Randy Bean, own a house together in Palo Alto, California. The story was first reported by Michelangelo Signorile on his Sirius Satellite Network radio show. You can find more details here: Secretary of State co-owns home with female filmmaker.
Rice and Bean (I admit it, i giggle every time write that) not only share a home, but also a line of credit that has been used to renovate the property. "We advise clients to be very cautious when purchasing a home. Home ownership records are public and may trigger an investigation under the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy," Steve Ralls of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) told me today. The policy prohibits out gays and lesbians from serving in the nation's armed forces.
"SLDN is aware of cases where servicemembers have been investigated for owning a home with a person of the same gender." Steve shared.
When I think of these men and women who have given so much for our nation it makes me, at the same time want to scream and cry.
A recent investigation into the Don't Ask, Don't Tell case of PFC Christopher Mastromarino by PageOneQ found that reports of the military citing Mastramarino's living with his gay cousin and his cousin's partner were cited in the military's arguments. The case, which had no evidence presented that indicated Mastramarino is gay, was dismissed last month. Mastramarino was a member of the Army's prestigious Old Guard.
Ralls told me that SLDN requested meetings with Secretary Rice when she was National Security Advisor. Those requests were never granted. "To my knowledge, the Secretary has made no public statements regarding Don't Ask, Don't Tell," Steve said.
"Silence," my friend and colleague Andy Humm of Gay USA told Raw Story today, "Gives consent." He is right.
Of course, almost worse than silence, is when the rank hypocrisy shines through. Here's Condi last October 10:
Thank you. Thank you very much. I am truly honored and delighted to have the opportunity to swear in Mark Dybul as our next Global AIDS Coordinator. I am pleased to do that in the presence of Mark's parents, Claire and Richard; his partner, Jason; and his mother-in-law, Marilyn. You have wonderful family to support you, Mark, and I know that's always important to us. Welcome."Like Mary Cheney and Heather Poe, Dybul and his partner are welcome into the Bush/Cheney inner circle. I don't know any one who ever said Condi has a problem with gay people in her life. The GOP is great at trotting out a few Auntie Toms to show you how loving they are. At the same time the Karl Roves of the party will inflict damage upon millions and millions of Americans. They are, of course, laughing all the way to the next State Dinner.
Is the person who is fourth in line to the presidency, right behind the Speaker of the House and President Pro Tempore of the Senate, in a relationship with a woman? Well, certainly a financial one. And as she sits silently by, the very men and women who carry out our foreign policy are hounded by their country and stand to lose their livelihoods for exactly the same thing.
After all, Condi Rice is the highest appointed official in the Federal government -- discounting Bush v. Gore, of course.
Yes, Condi, it is relevant.
Move along...nothing to look at here...

...The 'no special treatment' for elected officials goes on:
Foley likely won't be prosecuted, amid failure by media to report on email soliciting male page:
Mike Rogers, the gay blogger who first suggested Foley was gay on his website blogACTIVE, also said the media had failed."Once again, the mainstream media has failed in its role in a great democracy," he remarked. "Despite even being given constitutional protection to pursue stories, the papers in Florida not only protected a political career -- most likely so they could have continued access to Congressman Foley -- but they stood in the way of reporting a crime. With the statue of limitations passed, the blame for Mark Foley's escape from the law falls squarely upon the heads of the newspapers that had this evidence."

We need a Drama Queen to sort this out...
From time to time, I've invited guest bloggers to come on board and focus on issues of interest to BlogActive readers. This Patrick McHenry mess is growing by the day...and there are connections to a lot of gay people. There have been a ton of both rumors and facts flying around and with everything going on with Craig, I just have not had much time to dedicate to this story.Take all the information out there and put it in a graphic and it looks like this:
Since so many of you have written to me about this, I've enlisted the help of Leslie Bland to help sort out the whole mess and to keep us up to date on the latest. Leslie blogs on several North Carolina political sites (BlueNC, Scrutiny Hooligans) as Drama Queen, is an actor, political activist and outer of hypocrites.Leslie helped to start the WNCNN (Western North Carolina News Network) to help defeat Congressman Charles Taylor (R-NC). Taylor lost his reelection bid to Heath Shuler (D). After moving to NC's 10th Congressional district last year, Leslie, under her moniker of Drama Queen, founded the site Pat Go Bye Bye. At first, she found it hard to believe the disgruntled Republicans who called and emailed with sordid tales about their own party's future Tom Delay. Now, after 6 months of evidence-gathering, she's convinced it's worth dedicating some serious time to.
Please join me in welcoming Leslie to the site... If you have tips or information on this case we have set up a special email. Send your notes to mchenrytips(at)blogactive.com. (PLEASE NOTE: Mail sent to this address will be sent to both Mike and Leslie)

Akers scoops me on my own story...
Mary Ann Akers at the Washington Post's Sleuth knows what people in DC are up to even before they know it themselves. Mary Ann, some of you may recall, reported on this site at the very start. Then she was writing for Roll Call; now she's at WaPo.
Akers scooped my blogpost on my new strategy. Read her full item here.
More thoughts tomorrow.Cry me a river
I thought it funny that the Times named this picture 10craig.450.jpg.Did Larry Craig get a bum rap? Did the cop go too hard on him? Who cares... A greater crime was stopped. As Dan Savage wrote this week:"
[I]f a bill making it illegal for men to hit on other men in airport toilets—or anywhere else—had come up for a vote, Senator Craig—with his perfect antigay voting record—would surely have voted in favor of it. So even if Senator Craig is the victim here, as some are insisting, it's hard to feel much sympathy for him.
No more 'outing'
(This is not the change in strategy post...look for that later today.)In the Summer of 2004, I began to share my frustration about anti-gay politicians and high-level staffers with friends and acquaintances. During those chats talks in strategy talks about the launch of the site -- many with my blogfather John Aravosis -- friends and colleagues always used the word 'outing.'
At the time I did not know that Michelangelo Signorile had written about the origins of the word and that its etymology was itself tied to a closeted gay man. In 2003 Signorile wrote in Gay City News:
The word was coined by a major closet case, William Henry III, a critic at Time magazine who is now deceased. He claimed that some gay journalists—yes, including yours truly—were doing this terrible new thing, revealing gay public figures’ homosexuality, and he claimed that some gay activists had dubbed it ‘outing.’ The word stuck, though some of us hated its violent and special connotation—we preferred simply calling it reporting.Of course, Michelangelo is 100% correct. And back in October of 2005 I said I'd no longer use the word. I've been slipping up. A lot.
Last week, a DC columnist wrote:
Rogers sees his outings -- a word he says he doesn't like, although he uses it more than a dozen times over a single lunch...I have fallen into a bit of a trap with the word...And I am going to try in earnest to not use it (except within quotation marks and never to explain my work, but that of people who indiscriminately disclose sexual orientation of others for no reason.)
So, I'm going to hold myself to a new standard. Every time I use the word "outing" -- except as noted above -- I'll give $2.00 to Truth Wins Out (the national organization beating back the so-called ex-gay movement). If I use the word here, I'll send $10 to TWO. And, worst of all, if I ever use it on air, I'll send $20 to TWO.
Keep me on my toes.
