Barney talks about Larry

From THE POLITICO's Crypt:

Frank's gaydar detects Craig

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said last week that Sen. Larry Craig is likely gay. The Idaho Republican, who has emphatically denied he is gay or bisexual, has fended off rumors of his homosexuality repeatedly during his three decades in politics, most recently denying allegations he solicited gay sex in a Minnesota airport restroom this summer.

Frank, one of only two openly gay members of Congress, said he had reached his conclusion about Craig from news reports. In particular, he cited a report in the Idaho Statesman that Craig had engaged in oral sex with another man in a Union Station bathroom, probably in 2004.

Frank, who served with Craig in the House from 1981 to 1991 before Craig was elected to the Senate, said he believed Craig’s arrest was unfair.

“I don’t think he should have been arrested, but it’s more likely than not that he was interested in sex,” Frank said.

Asked if he believed Craig was gay, Frank replied: “More likely than not.”

A spokesman for Craig could not immediately be reached for comment.

Frank was in his fourth House term when he came out in 1987, and he has had his own share of gay sex controversies. Still, he had no sympathy for Craig.

“You have a right to privacy but not hypocrisy,” Frank said. “During the period that I was closeted for seven years, I was always a gay rights supporter. I think it’s a fundamental violation of principles to vote one way and act another.”

Unreal... or is it?

You know... When I got started at this and many times thereafter, people asked "Do you have a list?"

No. But I'll tell ya... if I did, it would be the size of the Manhattan phone book. My friend Jeremy at Good As You summed it up simply: "It's seriously UNREAL at this point."

As usual, the closet case is anti-gay and a liar to boot...ends up that what everyone was saying was right all along.

'Republicans suck': Becoming less a slam, more a factual statement:
Richard Curtis, a GOP state rep in Washington, voted this year against domestic partnerships for the state's gay couples. He also opposed a bill that bans nondiscrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. So knowing what we know about this generation's crop of Republican lawmakers, this should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone....
I know, it's not even shocking anymore.

Stop by Jeremy's site...you can read the details and see the new HQ for the Republican National Committee he designed.

Larry Craig, The New King Of The Thrones

The great thing about blogs is that they have readers. A BlogActive reader has found something absolutely hilarious. According to his email:
The attached MP3 file is from a 1960s promotional LP put out by the American Standard toilet company.
In honor of Larry Craig's decision to remain in the US Senate, have a listen to the American Standard Company's My Bathroom.

A right winger goes down Down Under

Closeted right-wingers, hardly an American only phenomenon. From Australia's party of anti-gay hate, the Family First Party:

IF YOU thought John Howard was having a bad election campaign, spare a thought for Andrew Quah, a candidate for the Family First Party. He has been dumped as its candidate for the western Sydney seat of Reid after photos of him parading his private parts appeared on gay websites and were emailed around the country.

Mr Quah, 21, has also admitted to looking at porn websites in the past two weeks, which made his position untenable given his party's strong commitment to protect children by making porn harder to access on the internet.

How to be Larry Craig...

It's a few days old,. but I just found this... From The Hill:
Here are several options that can be added to your basic suit, glasses and senator’s pin. This system will allow dozens of Larry Craigs to coexist at one party without losing their individuality.
  • Sport a large sign that reads “NOT GAY”
  • Carry a roll of toilet paper and keep a square taped to your shoe
  • Construct a bathroom stall around you, held up by suspenders (much like a kissing booth)
  • Carry a boarding pass, Minneapolis to Washington
  • Attach a knife handle to your back, identified by the letters “GOP”
  • Wear tap shoes
  • Cling to a giant Senate seal (you can occasionally mention that you’re about to let go, but then don’t)
  • Show up with a friend wearing a police badge around his neck.

What did he expect?

What did Larry Craig expect? That he would go on national television, lie to Matt Lauer and not have people come forward who he had sexual encounters with? It never works that way. In politics, when you lie and lie publicly, people who know the truth come forward.

We now now Mike Jones lied. David Phillips seems more credible. I can't say I know if this guy is telling the truth or not...but it sure seems interesting....

PageOneQ | Man: I had sex with Larry Craig
A man has come forward with a claim that he has engaged in gay sex with scandalized Idaho Senator Larry Craig (R-ID), who pleaded guilty to charges resulting from a sex sting in the Minneapolis, MN airport. The encounter was reported by Wonkette, a popular DC-based blog. 'I went pale and nearly vomited,' says David Phillips, speaking of a recent night in a bar, through which Larry Craig's voice came out of a nearby television.

So, THIS is what they meant by Washington pork!

Larry Craig uses campaign funds for legal fees - The Crypt's Blog - Politico.com
Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) has used $23,000 in campaign funds to pay the top Washington ethics lawyer, Stan Brand, who is fighting his case before the Senate ethics committee, according to Craig’s latest filing with the Federal Election Commission. No additional legal expenses appear in the report, but they eventually will. Craig, according to his office, has decided to use his campaign committee for attorney fees related to his criminal defense in Minnesota as well.

Avoiding becoming a psychological mess

It's nice to see politicians who have the guts to stand up and be proud and honest about who they are. Here's the perfect example of what politics should be: Yeah, I'm gay, now on to what matters.

Pam's House Blend:: NC: Out gay Dem runs to unseat Elizabeth Dole in U.S. Senate:
History here in North Carolina! Chapel Hill resident Jim Neal, an investment banker and former Democratic presidential fundraiser, is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in 2008, and he hopes to unseat the horrid Elizabeth 'Do-Nothing' Dole.

The big news is that he is running as an out gay man, something he announced Saturday in an online forum at BlueNC. It came about when someone registered on the site and just asked the Big Question:"

Kevin Naff puts it into words...

The current editor of the Washington Blade is a nice change from the right-winger Chris Crain who used to run the shop.

Kevin wrote a great analysis of Craig's interview with Matt Lauer.

Kevin Naff on Bladeblog:
Sadly, the irony of Craig’s predicament is lost on him. Like it or not, he has become a member of that community he so loathes. Mitt Romney publicly denounced him and removed him from his Idaho campaign, giving Craig a little taste of what it’s like to be the member of a group that is hated and discriminated against. No wonder he chose to run back into the closet. His so-called friends in the GOP are shunning him and some, he claims, even refuse to look him in the eye. How does it feel, Larry?

But rather than add his voice to those fighting prejudice and discrimination, Craig continues to propagate both. Even after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct in connection with solicitation of gay sex, he continues to demonize and attack fellow gay people. Craig told Lauer that homosexuality is, “a lifestyle I don’t agree with.” He voted against the hate crimes bill only weeks ago, maintaining his perfect anti-gay voting record in Congress.

Anniversaries are usually more respectful of spouses

It was exactly one year ago today that I first reported on Senator Larry Craig and his history of sexual encounters with men. This morning Craig "celebrated" the occasion by dragging his wife into the mess.

He is certainly a masterful politician and even as Lauer messed up facts, Craig nodded with seeming agreement...but only when it was to the Seantor's benefit.

I think I summed it up pretty well on Chris Matthews tonight:

A favorite musical defines hero Pam Spaulding

First she was rude, now she's Wicked:

I'm pretty lucky. Not everyone gets to meet and spend time with the people they consider heroes. I have the fortune of not only having met Pam Spaulding a number of times, but I have been able to spend some time with her at conventions and community events.

A couple of years ago, LGBT political bloggers joined together to help Pam win the best LGBT blog award... it was a fun campaign...

The LGBT community showed Pam the love and she won, handily beating a coalition of conservative gay guys in the GOP. She snapped up the award again in '06.

And now, her greatest honor yet. She's received an endorsement from a corner of the vast right-wing conspiracy known as Christian Civic League of Maine. Here's what the wingnuts have to say about our Pam:
Pam's House Blend is a "leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy..."

Mr. "I am not gay" headed for television

Larry Craig has a plan: Keep the truth from his family, lie to the American people on national television. The sad thing is that a man who has taken an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States of America would have no problem lying to the nation's citizens. And to put your wife through this as a prop...shame on you Larry:
Idaho Senator Larry Craig will end his silence and appeal to the court of public opinion in an exclusive “Matt Lauer Reports” primetime special on Tuesday, October 16 and on “Today” Wednesday, October 17th, an NBC press report said.

Craig is expected to discuss his August arrest in a Minneapolis men's room for lewd behavior, his failed attempt to withdraw his guilty plea in the case, and his recent retraction of his resignation from the Senate. It is also widely assumed Craig will once again deny being gay.

The network said Lauer will also interview the Senator's wife, Suzanne Craig, who will be speaking publicly for the first time about her husband's troubles.
One more thing...He's filed an appeal:
Embattled Sen. Larry Craig asked the Minnesota Court of Appeals Monday to overrule a county judge who refused to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea in connection with an arrest in an airport bathroom sex sting.

Craig's appeal was filed at the court in St. Paul less than two weeks after Hennepin County Judge Charles Porter refused to overturn the guilty plea, saying it "was accurate, voluntary and intelligent, and ... supported by the evidence."

Craig, a Republican from Idaho, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in August after he was accused of soliciting sex in a bathroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in June.

Brown County Republican Party chairman faces sex charges

The chairman of the Republican Party in Brown County faces criminal charges for allegedly fondling a 16-year-old Ethan House runaway and providing the boy with beer and marijuana late last year.

Donald Fleischman, 37, of Allouez, was charged last month with two counts of child enticement, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a child and a single charge of exposing himself to a child.

New book marketing technique...

We all know that the most effective way to promote a new book is to hide from the media. I took some heat when I challenged Mike Jones over his claim that he met Larry Craig. The moment I heard the claim, literally within seconds, I said to myself, "he's lying."

And now he's ditching media... Hmmmmm... from here it looks like I'm being proven right...

From the absolutely best LGBT news service on the web:

Mike Jones, author of I Had To Say Something, has ceased giving interviews following a stormy confrontation with PageOneQ's editor Mike Rogers.

Without further comment, Weiner responded via email:
Mike is taking a break from interviews right now and has no comment on the Craig allegations.

Forbes on sex and politics and the web

Forbes, probably to sway US financiers to ignore Foley, Vitter, Craig and the rest, has run a story and photo slide show about international sex scandals, going so far as to print:
Just about every country in the world has been rattled by some sort of political sex scandal in recent times.
Source? It sounds to me like a bit of an exaggeration, but the magazine was published for over 35 years by a closeted gay leather daddy, Malcolm Forbes...perhaps that is still clouding their view. Reading the article I can't help think that the subtle message in the piece is that it's OK for the magazine's readers to write off these scandals because, well, they happen everywhere.

One section of the article describes the effect the web has had on the media:
But sex scandals loom so large throughout the West because of a free (and aggressive) press--a phenomenon magnified by technology. In Washington blogger Mike Rogers uses the Web to "out" gay government staffers and members of Congress. Naomi Seligman Steiner, deputy director of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, says the rise of the Internet and 24-hour cable news has empowered the public with an "insatiable appetite" for scandal.
The story is here.
The slide show of sex scandals is here.

Overrated

I always thought Mike Jones was not nearly the hero others thought he was and as we saw he quickly faded from the spotlight.

Now he's off lying to misleading a radio station by intimating he had sex with Larry Craig.

The reality is Mike Jones is pretty trashy guy. I call him out on it on a radio show in Palm Springs. The audio is here too:
PageOneQ and BlogActive's Mike Rogers, the blogger who first reported on Larry Craig's activities in public bathrooms has challenged Mike Jones, famed Denver escort and outer of fallen megachurch leader Ted Haggard, to produce evidence he has met with Senator Larry Craig as he claimed on radio last night.
And, oh, Mike Jones is just the kind of guy to accuse someone of slander or blackmail...you can hear it in his voice...So, Mike, you're a liar. Sue me if I am wrong.

Mistreatment of my family makes me angry

ENDA, oy. Time out.

I used to think I got a lot of email. then came ENDA (or as my friend Sara prefers, EDNA). "Fuggedaboutit" New Yorkers say... More email than one can deal with. Lots of good stuff. Lots of people who know little about inside the Beltway politics. Lots of hateful things.

Despite the rhetoric of some, there are legitimate opinions on both sides of the issue. That being said, my take is simple: When ENDA includes us all, we all move forward together. I could never look members of my family like Mara Kiesling of the National Center for Transgender Equality and Melissa Sklarz of National Stonewall Democrats again if I supported taking gender identity out of ENDA merely to get it passed.

While 'inclusion or nothing' is my take on it, I am also smart enough to know that HRC is not going to allow themselves to be put in a position of punishing House members for voting for any version of ENDA. If ENDA hits the floor -- with or without gender identity protections -- it's unthinkable that HRC would oppose it. It's just not going to happen. It's not how Capital Hill works. (To be clear, I'm not trying to tell people what to think about it, but my friends on the Hill tell me I am right on the money about how it works.)

Fortunately, the votes, if they happen, are at least a week away. With the postponement, we're given some space to push the issue, to have meetings, to lobby, and to work on what will be best for all of us. At times like this, speculation is rarely helpful; it's much better for the same energy to go toward working from our current position to get where we all want to be.

You may not agree with every tactic of our movement's leaders, but I can attest that everyone of them -- whether it's big operations like NGLTF and HRC or smaller ones like PFLAG and Pride At Work -- are working tirelessly on our behalf. Regardless of how this all pans out, we owe them all a debt of gratitude. Are we perfect little ducks lined up in a row? Nah. If we were we'd be more like the opposition.

I'm not saying people should not be passionate and if I had a representative in Congress -- don't get me started on that -- I would personally ask her or him to vote against any ENDA that did not include protections based on gender identity. But, regardless of the vibrant discussion/debate, some people have gone overboard. when people start slamming our community organizations for no other reason than to score political points -- especially the ones I've worked for and believe in -- I'm going to stand up and say something.

So far the hard right, conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan seems to be the only one who has endorsed Aravosis's broad, and unnecessary, attack on NGLTF and his decision to throw the transgender community under the bus.

Trust me, I get it. For our organizations -- all of them -- it really does suck to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. At the same time, folks like Aravosis hurling words like stones from a keyboard does not help. It's like lighter fluid on an already fiery bar-b-que; it may look neat, but it makes the food taste gross. If the proverbial stones get tossed around, lets target the cadre of anti-gay closet cases piling up in my inbox.

The blogger, whose last big story was Gannon in '05, writes:
As little as 14 years ago, the phrase "lesbian and gay community" was used by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force back in 1993 (while NGLTF is now leading
the charge for transgender inclusion in the "LGBT" community).
As "little as 14 years ago"? Huh. Give me a break. It's not like the statement was as "little as two months ago." And by the way, who says "as little as"? People say "as recently as," but "as recently as 14 years ago would have looked pretty funny, eh?

In his rambling post, Aravosis gives us a revisionist history web lesson on LGBT lingo. He suggests googling "glb community" and that we will "see that the phrase, while not used any more, was in popular use a while back..." Well, if 644 hits on Google means "popular" I guess it's true. (Incidentally, entering "lgbt community" returns over one million hits on the same search engine.)

If anything, I would tell my transgender brothers and sisters to be aware of who this messaging is coming from. From his bio:
...Aravosis has significant political experience, having served five years as a legislative attorney for US Senator Ted Stevens.
On another section of the same site:
US Senator Ted Stevens - Foreign Affairs Adviser
Frankly, I am getting a little sick and tired of people who got us into this damned mess thinking they are the ones that get to tell us how to get out: Ted Stevens. Five years. Enough said. (Incidentally, on his blog the reference to this in the bio is quite truncated: "John's policy experience includes stints in the US Senate, the World Bank...")

Perhaps it's Aravosis' own perceptions how how people will perceive him if his cause is aligned with the transgender community that worry him. Of course, my blogfather looks just fine playing gender-bender with pearls to me:

Girls in glass dressing rooms
shouldn't throw pearls.

Any questions?
* * * *
It's really easy to stand with your friends when the road is smooth. It's the true friends who stick by you when the road is rough. Right now, for the LGBT community it's a rough road. I'm going to stick with my friends and press on with the struggle.

If others disagree, fine, but don't insult my family. It makes me angry and I might just call them out on it.
