Eric Hegedus on our national priorities

I had the chance to chat with Eric Hegedus at the recent National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association conference in DC. (He is the organization's immediate past president). We got to the subject of the blog and he had some interesting insights into why the press did and did not bite on certain stories. A month or so later, after the Buse report, Hegedus wrote this analysis of what people find important in who is gay.

How the Outing of Clay Aiken Trumped Mark Buse:
What's wrong with this picture?

Journalists are falling all over the revelation about Aiken. It is, of course, newsworthy by any standard and raises the opportunity to discuss such topics as the all-too-real 'celebrity closet' and broader issues regarding the struggles faced by gay parents.

But why are they afraid to pursue the Buse story, which has its own potential ramifications for not only the campaign, but also the LGBT community?"
