Why we are better than they are

Elaine Donnelly shows what an idiot she is.

Quotes from gay service members sometimes make me cry. Dana Milbank at WaPo:
[Wounded Iraq war veteran Eric] Alva spoke of his lost leg and how he 'nearly died to secure rights for others that I myself was not free to enjoy.'
I was once stuck in the Charlotte, NC airport overnight. Late in the night, amid hundreds of Red Cross cots, I got involved in a discussion with about seven others. Some civilian, some military, all ages. We disagreed on some things, mostly the war in Iraq. This, of course was not a shock to hear from young men trained to kill on command.

On some things we did agree. Everyone there, from the 20 year old flying to his first assignment to the retired policeman and everyone in between acknowledged that the days of Don't Ask, Don't Tell are numbered. And, as long as Obama stays away from dopes like Nunn as VP, the next administration will repeal the pathetic law. (Sam Nunn fires gay people because they are gay.)

Nunn has not said DADT should be repealed, but only that Congress should review the matter. Well, Sam, you now have available the video of the hearing. Watch it and take a stand. Or are you, a veteran, too wimpy to take a postition?

It's a joke, until someone ends up dead

When I first heard that anti-gay Oklahoma legislator Sally Kern was caught taking a gun int the state capitol, I made a joke out of it...

I decided to go a more sious angle after Howie Klein reminded me of a much more serious angle:
My panic was based on another local legislator, Dan White, sneaking a gun into City Hall in November, 1978 and murdering a friend of mine, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, and Mayor George Moscone, the father of another friend. It was a traumatic day for the entire city of San Francisco but especially for the gay community, Harvey having been the first openly gay man elected to any high profile office in America.

Nothing like being ridden out of town AND looking like an idiot

Senator Larry Craig maintains support of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell':
As a Congressional panel hears the case for, and against, repeal of the controversial 1993 military policy preventing gay and lesbian personnel from serving openly, some Republican representatives maintain that the policy ought to remain in place.

Among those supporting the status quo is Senator Larry Craig (R-ID). 'Current policy has served us well,' Senator Craig told CNSNews.com. 'I think we ought to sustain it. I see no evidence that it should be repealed.'

Vanquish them

Religion Dispatches - Gay Marriage to End “Culture Wars”?:
"If we lose California, if they defeat the marriage amendment, I’m afraid that the culture war is over and Christians have lost,” said [The American Family Association's Don] Wildmon, “I’ve never said that publicly until now—but that’s just the reality of the fact."

"Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory."

A Netroots Nation side trip...

The Rude Pundit and Mike Stark took a field trip from Netroots Nation over to some right-wing nutjob gathering in Austin. John Fund and Grover Norquist on a lunch date... how sweet...

If you don't know who Stark is, you ought to. Well, at least the New York Times thinks you should.

Greetings from Netroots Nation

I rarely write about my travel and in most cases when I do, I make it a point of doing so after I return. This is for a host of reasons. When traveling to a city, I like to travel and research "below the radar" and I am also well aware that on more than one trip I have been followed as I investigate.

The current trip I am on is of a much different natures... investigating leads and getting tips... A LOT of them. Netroots Nation i Austin, TX is the premiere conference for the progressive on-line community.

Sometimes there is a coming together of factors that makes the whole MUCH greater than the sum of it's part. Start with an upcoming national election with 1/3 of the Senate and the entire House; add 1500-2000 progressives with information about politicians in their state; toss in a bit (er, a lot) of frustration at the GOP and you've got a recipe for tip after tip.

Much to do once I get home... Looking forward to the next few months.

Rumors

I normally do not report on rumors. After I wrote about Larry Sinclair a number of mainstream media friend suggested to not do other rumors without any substantiation. They thought doing otherwise was giving them cred.

This, however, went from rumor to story when McCain's folks scrubbed the website over the Alabama AG who, a number of sites claim, is soon to be outed:

From Brad Blog
The John McCain campaign scrubbed its website today to remove all references to its Alabama campaign chairman, Attorney General Troy King.

King, who is known for extremist views on religion and who has frequently made homophobic statements, including calling gays the 'downfall of society,' is the subject of rumors that his wife recently discovered him having sex with another man."

Bye Bye Brit

I wonder if Brit will now feel comfortable coming out about the real story behind his son Sandy's, um, "suicide"?

WaPo: Fox's Hume to Step Down
Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.

Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of 'Special Report,' the 6 p.m. show that has beaten the cable news competition for seven years. They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior-statesman role, not unlike that of NBC's Tom Brokaw, for roughly 100 days a year.

Catholic school principal caught in public gay threesome

PageOneQ | Catholic school principal caught in public gay threesome:
The principal of a New York Catholic school was arrested Sunday after being caught naked with two other men on a vacant property.

'Two men got out and met a third person on the side of my house,' nearby resident Rich Pacheco told WCBS, 'and they went on that property and that's when I called 911.'

41-year-old Gabriel DeJesus, who heads Sacred Heart School for the Arts in Mount Vernon, is currently being investigated by the New York Archdiocese. Officials said that he 'has been a well-regarded educator,' and he was still serving as the school's principal as of Monday.

LGBT donors say no to Nunn

Over at eQualityGiving, the amazing LGBT philanthropy related on-line community, a report by John Norris up that includes former Sen. Sam Nunn's (D-GA) record on LGBT issues (not good) and interesting analysis on the effect of such a pick.

I'm going to stay as positive as I can and just assume that there is no way Sen. Obama will pick a man with this record. Our community has some of the most talented and best working at the DNC and on the Obama campaign (even though I do drive them a little crazy now and then) and I am confident they are representing our concerns directly to Senator Obama.

From the report, here are some of the highlights from Nunn's career.

Don't Ask Sam Nunn:
In 1982 Nunn summarily removed two openly gay attorneys in his staff because, as Nunn asserted, they posed a "security risk." However, Nunn also told them that a gay staff member "wouldn't go over in Georgia."

In 1984 Nunn backed Senator John Glenn's bid for the White House, citing the candidate's "courage" in expressing the "strongly held moral belief that homosexuals should not be role models for our children."

In 1993 - Don't Ask Don't Tell: Nunn became the leader of the few Congressional Democrats to challenge President Clinton's initiative to allow gay men and lesbians to serve in the military. With television cameras in tow, Nunn led the famous visit to the showers and bunks of a submarine. The damage of Nunn's position extended beyond the LGBT community, undermining the first Democratic presidency since 1980.

In 1993 Nunn said he believed the heterosexual lifestyle was "morally superior to the homosexual lifestyle," followed by "American family deterioration is one of the biggest problems we face in our culture."

In 1996 Nunn voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), despite that he had already announced that he was not running for reelection. ENDA did not pass by one vote. ENDA has not been voted again in the senate ever since.
Oh, about that picture, above. Those glasses. That tie. The man could use a few gay men around. Paging Tim Gunn.

Straight (so to speak) to the top

First the short version... Gay boycott urged of 2 San Diego hotels:
Same-sex marriage advocates urged travelers Thursday to boycott two hotels owned by a San Diego County businessman who gave $125,000 to a group backing a California ballot initiative to ban gay marriage.

Doug Manchester, who owns the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego and the Grand Del Mar golf resort near La Jolla, donated the money to the National Organization for Marriage in January.
Companies love the web. They get to hide behind the 'contact form' where your message may or may not get to the person who you want to hear it.

So, if you're pissed over the fact that two hotels in San Diego are donating to the anti-gay ballot initiative in California you can hop over to Hyatt's or The Grand Del Mar's contact page OR you can take a few minutes and locate the email of the guy in charge and get him a bunch of personal messages.

So... Unhappy with these hotels? Go straight directly to the top by emailing these guys HERE and HERE.

Pam stars in her own story

When I first started blogging I heard about a blogger named Pam Spaulding. Her address at the time was http://www.pamshouseblend.com/. What a long time ago that was. Now, FOUR years later, Pam is stronger than ever before. She has since become PamsHouseBlend.com and is a national leader not in only the LGBT blogosphere, but in the national progressive blog scene. I am amazed at the number of conferences Pam attends, often at her own expense. (When Pam had surgery she reportedly refused anesthesia in case an important email came in.)

If you want to catch Pam, attend one of the many, many conferences she attends or watch for her on cable, where she appears on CNN and other stations representing progressive positions on LGBT rights, health care, the war in Iraq, and more.

A lot of people say to me "Mike, did you read my blog post yesterday about ______ (fill in the blank)? Chances are it's "no," but when it comes to sites I read on a daily basis, The Blend is an absolute must.

Pam's hometown paper, The Raleigh News & Observer, has done a huge profile on her... Check it out...

Raleigh News & Observer, Blogger gets respect:
Spaulding, a Durham native, is a bit of a local celebrity these days, recognized in supermarkets and airports by her dirty-blond dreadlocks. And it's all because of her blog, Pam's House Blend, which turns four years old this month.

Caption this

I asked the very funny Nick Langewis, Editor of PageOneQ, to come up with a couple of captions for this:

-My aide will be accompanying me on my honeymoon in case there are any pools that need cleaning or fixtures that need polishing.

-Gov. Charlie Crist announces the formation of his 'exploratory committee.'
I thought of:
-Want to come back to my place?... We can play Governor and Constituent.

-When I said I wanted new shoulders on Florida highways what I meant were these.
Any others?

Sullivan ends Crist campaign

Andrew Sullivan has a wide enough readership that there is little doubt that this blog post will throw water on Charlie Crist's burning desire to be Vice President.

Sullivan: A Long Way From The Green Iguana
It's funny to watch the partisan right out-do each other to declare Obama a cynic while Charlie Crist gets engaged to a woman at the height of McCain's veep search. For the record, from the Broward-Palm Beach New Times:
The rumors about Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and the Green Iguana just wouldn't go away. The story goes that the Florida governor frequented the Green Iguana, a bar in Tampa, back in the early 1990s when he was just starting his political career. He was less careful back then, people say, and during his partying at the Green Iguana, he was openly gay.

In a way it would be good if Crist was the4 VP nominee. With stuff like this out there, I can't believe McCain would be THAT stupid.

Cry me a river of wasted gas

This has nothing to do with outing or gay rights, but I found it interesting that there are people out there who want sympathy over the cars they bought... Some snippets...

NY Times At $100 for Tank of Gas, Some Choke on ‘Fill It':
With gasoline prices high and rising, a new financial milestone has arrived: the $100 tank of gas.

GMC Denali XL, an extra-large sport utility vehicle with televisions built into the leather seats. But in June, one week after he bought it, he pulled into a station on a near-empty tank and watched the total climb higher and higher — to $109. “It just about killed me,” Mr. Carisone said.

David H. Obelcz, who founded the club in 2002 and is still a member of the board, sold his Avalanche because he could not afford gasoline for it.

But now that Avalanche owners pay more than $100 per tank, the club is lucky to attract 10 members once every two months.

Hummer clubs are hurting, too. In Nebraska, Ric Hines of the Omaha Hummer Owner Group — known as Omahog — stopped doing off-road trips this summer and started riding his recumbent bicycle instead.

Mark R. Price, founder of the Illiana Hummer Club in the Chicago area, owns three Hummer H1s, which get about eight miles per gallon. “A lot of our members won’t travel 70 miles just to support a parade anymore,” Mr. Price said. “People wait for something a little closer.”

...loves packing her three kids and all their soccer gear into her 2000 GMC Yukon XL. But she hates paying $160 to fill the 38.5-gallon tank.

“I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be able to keep this up,” said Mr. Burtch, 43, who lives in Marion, Ohio.

Ta Ta

Conservative icon, former Senator Jesse Helms dies at age 86:
Former Sen. Jesse Helms, who built a career along the fault lines of racial politics and battled liberals, Communists and the occasional fellow Republican during 30 conservative years in Congress, died on the Fourth of July. He was 86.
I wonder what his granddaughter will have to say. Jennifer Helm-Knox is BlogACTIVE's first recipient of the Dick and Mary Cheney Award she's a closeted lesbian GOP elected Judge in grandpappy's state.

Thanks for the memories, Jesse:

Desperate times call for desperate lies

SHOCKER! Staver continues his campaign of misinformation.

In a world of soundbites, it's fun to get one in here and there that explains exactly what the right wingers do, turn to lies if the truth won't assist them.

We all know Staver is a pathological liar who is unable to win using the truth. You can learn more about him from Jeremy Hooper at Good as You. (Jeremy is the expert on right wing lies about gays.)

Thanks too Jeremy for the video!

Paging Dina McGreevey

I can't imagine she is that stupid. He's probably unable to get it up and she's probably just fine being a sexless second lady.

Florida Gov. Crist says he's getting married - St. Petersburg Times:
"ST. PETERSBURG — Florida's most powerful bachelor is getting hitched.

Gov. Charlie Crist, single for nearly three decades, on Thursday morning became engaged to his girlfriend of nine months, Carole Rome.

'She's special in every way. She's brilliant, beautiful and sweet. I'm very, very lucky,' Crist told the St. Petersburg Times in an exclusive interview.

Crist said he picked out the sapphire and diamond ring on Wednesday at the Gold and Diamond Center in St. Petersburg's Northeast Shopping Center."
Just in case, I hope someone tells the woman he is gay. On second thought, I'll work on that.

Update: I called the reporter, Adam Smith, from the paper. Once he started to defend their decision on conspiring to protect Foley, I knew he was a lost cause. I ended the call asking him to please, please have someone warn this woman.

Interesting people read the blog

I got a call from an incredibly nice staffer at Fox News to ask me if I wanted to come on the Laura Ingram show today at 5pm ET to debate Matt Staver, founder of the Liberty Counsel on, of course, marriage in California.

The folks at the show saw my post on Stephen Baldwin and invited me on. I'm on around 5:25 pm today. Fox News Channel.

Actor: Listen to me as I tell you to ignore actors

Ingram asks an actor why people should listen to, um, actors. That actor, of course, goes on to tell everyone what he thinks.

Signorile has the video -- If you are over stupidity like trying to distance McCain from Bush, just pay attention to the ending few moments.

What exactly did Stephen have on his mind when talking to her?
