Eric Hegedus on our national priorities

I had the chance to chat with Eric Hegedus at the recent National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association conference in DC. (He is the organization's immediate past president). We got to the subject of the blog and he had some interesting insights into why the press did and did not bite on certain stories. A month or so later, after the Buse report, Hegedus wrote this analysis of what people find important in who is gay.

How the Outing of Clay Aiken Trumped Mark Buse:
What's wrong with this picture?

Journalists are falling all over the revelation about Aiken. It is, of course, newsworthy by any standard and raises the opportunity to discuss such topics as the all-too-real 'celebrity closet' and broader issues regarding the struggles faced by gay parents.

But why are they afraid to pursue the Buse story, which has its own potential ramifications for not only the campaign, but also the LGBT community?"

WOW, THIS IS GREAT!

One of the blog's readers, Glenn In Chicago, made this video about Mark Buse's work with John McCain. I just love it when Mark uses the word 'whip' in a political context.

I was catching up on comments when a reader mentioned that I had not included a copy of the original award. This is true.

Here it is...

Pam Spaulding, right again

LCR chides 'gay left' for discussing John McCain's gay chief of staff:
[W]hat is the 'personal destruction' you are talking about? If Buse is out, then discussing the fact that Mark Buse is gay shouldn't be of any consequence -- unless there is something wrong with being out of the closet to the Republican base.

Oh, I love the comments

I read the comments and wish I had more time to engage in a dialog on the comments. Sometimes some really interesting ones come in. I got this one yesterday and accidentally deleted it. Luckily I had on a screen when I did that.

Any amateur PI's in the house?
If you want to find out the real blockbuster make a deep research for the AIM DupontPig (maybe with an annex) in the chatrooms of some former webcammers in the years before Dec 2005.

Liberace?

Clay Aiken to reveal he is gay:
After years of dodging questions, former 'American Idol' singer Clay Aiken will acknowledge he is a gay man in an interview with People magazine set to run on its Web site Wednesday, according to media reports.

Celebrity site Perezhilton.com on Tuesday published a photo of the cover of People magazine's upcoming issue on which Aiken cradles his new son, Parker Foster Aiken, in his arms.

The caption reads 'Yes, I'm Gay,' and underneath is a quote from Aiken on his decision to come out of the closet that says: 'I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things.'

Log Cabinettes defend their own...

The Politics of Personal Destruction at its Worst:
The Gay Left bloggers are falling all over themselves trying to get people to pay attention to the fact that there is an openly gay person working for Sen. John McCain. This is a newsflash?

Here’s the deal. Wacky Left bloggers are on a witch hunt and this time their target is John McCain’s chief-of-staff, Mark Buse. Blogger Mike Rogers, whose specialty is “outing” politicians and staffers he deems anti-gay (Republicans, of course), claims that he’s “outing” Buse as a gay man. Joining in the charade is the Republican-hating and always dramatic Michelangelo Signorile, who posted the hysterical headline: “Hypocrisy Bombshell: Antigay John McCain has a Gay Chief of Staff.

Story bubbles

The story rises up... AP partner, The International Business Times, has gone with the story. Mark Buse's Homosexuality Rumors a Controversy for McCain's Anti-Gay Ideology:
NEW YORK - Blogs on the Web said on Monday that John McCain's Chief of Staff, Mark Buse is homosexual and is causing certain ideological clashes due to McCain's strong position against couples of the same sex."

According to reports today, a person named Brian Davis, 46, is claiming to be Buse's ex boyfriend. In addition, a gay community source quotes anonymous people from the Log Cabin Republicans- the only organization of republicans who support equality for gay and lesbian Americans- who have also claimed Buse is homosexual.

John McCain's Chief of Staff outed, wins Roy Cohn Award

When the first source on today's Roy Cohn Award recipient came forward approximately six months ago, he and I decided to wait and see where the presidential election went and how this person's boss performed. Dismally.

First a multiple choice question: Which nominee for President of the United States is homophobic and has a gay chief of staff at his Senate office in Washington, DC?
A. John McCain
B. Barack Obama
If you guessed "B," you're in the wrong spot. You belong here. If you guessed "A," congratulations, you passed with flying colors.

Mark Buse is not just a Chief of Staff for a homophobic United States Senator, but he is helping that Senator get elected to the White House.

Does Mark Buse fit the Barney Frank rule? Without a doubt. While McCain voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment, he supports amending state constitutions defining marriage as between a man and a woman. McCain knows our country needs everyone who wants to serve in the military and he knows that DADT is wrong, yet he swings to the right on repealing it.

Worst of all, and a demonstration of his inability to act rationally and with the country's best interests at heart, he picked someone who, if she becomes president (very likely), will be the most homophobic in American history.

With that in mind, and after confirming the information with two other sources, I decided it was time to present Buse the Roy Cohn Award for working against the interests of the lesbian and gay community while living as a gay man.

So, when the source an I talked again, I got some details. The main source (I have since confirmed the story with two others and Mike Signorile has the ex-boyfriend on the record) talked to me about how he met Buse at a number of gay parties, including one at Buse's house. Parties at the Buse residence, according to the source, would sometime become sexual in nature as the evening went on. The source told me, Ironically, that Buse and his partner of over ten years had a sling hanging in, of all places, the closet. (And Buse's screenames on AIM? dupontpig2008 and dccouple2play!)

Mike Signorile has more details on this than you can imagine! A huge article INCLUDING Buse's ex-boyfriend ON THE RECORD!

My source, who did not know if Buse and his partner had an open relationship had a brief sexual encounter with Buse alone. The source, due to work considerations must remain anonymous.

Here is my delivering the award to Buse's office on Friday (he wasn't there...well they said he wasn't, but the guy at the desk seemed to be emailing him back and forth at his desk):

TAKE ACTION!

Does the McCain campaign truly support LGBT Americans? Let's see when FOCUS ON THE FAMILY weighs in. TAKE ACTION and CALL FOCUS ON THE FAMILY and THANK THEM FOR SUPPORTING JOHN MCCAIN even though he has gay Americans in high places on his staff, including his Chief of Staff.

Here we go...

In 1989 I moved from to New York City . Back then, Michelangelo Signorile was one of my heroes. Today, he still is. His voice has gone from a groundbreaking magazine, Outweek (more on that this week), to a worldwide satellite radio show, The Michelangelo Signorile Show on Sirus Satellite Radio.

The great thing about Sirus is that they have a free three-day sample player on their site (hint: You can reset the three days by clearing out your cookies). You'll need to enroll, so give yoursef a few minutes before 2pm Monday if you want to listen in to the story.

We'll also have video of me delivering the first actual physical Roy Cohn Award.

Why do a I have a feeling that a lot of computers inside of the capitol will have Sirius free players?

If you have an interest in presidential politics, you're going to want to listen in.

If PBS has the money to spend coding bullshit polls like this, perhaps it's time to see if there is a surplus over there. Don't get me wrong, I love PBS...but this is pathetic.

72 hours?

I know, I know.... the suspense. the drama. I hope you will forgive a slight delay...when you read why, I have a feeling you will agree it's worth 72 hours for this.

No, I will not be exposing Mike Signorile.
Mike will be reporting on the award winner

I just delivered, in person, the ROY COHN AWARD. I could write here who the award is for, but wouldn't it be much more exciting if it was revealed on national satellite radio, with a free player so everyone in the political establishment can hear it live? I think so. I think it's worth a 72 hour delay....

And not just me... Michelangelo Signorile thinks it's worth it, too! That's why he has slated 2pm ET on Monday to co-break the news with me. I'll be on at 3:30 Monday to talk about it.

I hope you agree.

Monday. 2pm. Live. Sirus Satellite Radio. Channel 109. Listen FREE.

Signorile: Who is that Man Behind the Curtain?
Why, it's none other than the 56-year-old 'bachelor,' California Republican Congressman David Dreier, who recently ran away from me -- and ran behind a curtain -- shortly after I introduced myself (yes, and the video is below).

Lord's priorities: Tornadoes at gay events, ignoring dumb voters

Apparently the all-powerful "lord" who decided marriage was for a man and a woman is not powerful enough to help stupid people pull the right lever:

Opposition grows to initiative that would ban gay marriage
:
The shifting numbers in today's poll seem to reflect, in part, the effects of changes made to the measure's ballot title and summary by Attorney General Jerry Brown earlier this summer.

Prop. 8's title initially was "Limit on Marriage." Its summary described the initiative as providing that only marriages between a man and a woman would be "valid or recognized in California."

Brown's office changed the title to "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry." Officials said the wording better described what the initiative would do, although proponents alleged that the new description was biased and unsuccessfully tried to block it in court.

The wording change has increased opposition to the measure among voters who do not follow the issue closely, poll Director Mark DiCamillo said.

" 'Eliminates the right' -- those three words, no matter what you say after that, most people support preserving rights. Those words have a negative drag for those voters," he said.

There has been a call...

...There has been a call for some huge outing this week. I have been pretty clear that it is not going to be an elected official ("Let the electeds relax.... Not time for any of that kind of stuff....," I wrote). In the list of of others, you don't get any higher than this guy before you bump into the layer of politicians in the closet.

I certainly wish I could do more of the stories faster...but for a host of reasons stories get delayed. In one case, people banded together behind my back to not only take information, but to also tell potential sources to not speak to me if I contacted them. In democracies, they call it 'treason,' but that's an entirely different matter.

Live....and in person....

I found out tonight that the person I am presenting the award to will not be around as originally expected, so it needs to be moved to next week. This is going to be the FIRST Roy Cohn award presented in person, so I'm working out a few of the technical and filming details.

As soon as the actual award is here, I'll photograph and post it.

Larry Craig returns to court to fight 2007 gay sex sting conviction
A three-judge panel with the Minnesota Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in Senator Larry Craig's latest attempt to clear his name.

A judge has previously ruled against him in his bid to reverse his signed guilty plea stemming from a June 2007 incident in which he was held at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport during an undercover sting under suspicion of soliciting gay sex in one of the airport's restrooms."

A baby shower for Carole and Charlie?

I think hearing a toddler playing in the governor's mansion would be quaint. Charlie, it's OK now, a court in Florida said you can Carole can adopt even though you're gay!

Florida anti-gay adoption ban is unconstitutional
KEY WEST, Fla. -- A state judge has ruled against Florida's gay adoption ban, calling it 'unconstitutional' and allowing an openly gay foster parent to adopt a boy he's been raising.

Monroe Circuit Court Judge David Audlin Jr. said the 31-year-old law is contrary to the state constitution because it singles out a group for punishment. He added that adoption is in the 13-year-old's best interest. He has learning disabilities and special needs, and has lived with the foster parent since 2001."

Russia, yes? Canada, no?

Well, if her proximity to Russia is qualification... How will that measure up to Obama's time on the Foreign Relations Committee AND his proximity to Canada. In fact, by not recognizing Barack's closeness to our neighbor to the north, McCain and friends have insulted our largest trading partner.

Shame on you, Canadian-hating Republicans.

Hypothetically...

Let's say you ran a blog and next week you were going to give a Roy Cohn Award to someone in a very high position, toiling behind the scenes to help an anti-gay politician, which material would you create the award from?

Brushed metal? Because these losers brush off their own community.
Cherry? Cause these guys CAN tell a lie.
Stainless Steel? So they can see their hypocrisy reflected.
Walnut? They're nuts.
Mahogany? Do They Know Where They Are Going To?
