Outing Priests
Phil Attey, a longtime activist and communications pro in the LGBT community, has kicked off ChurchOuting.org, a site that collects information on closeted gay priests in the DC area (the site is also taking information on straight priests who have affairs).Folks have asked me what I think of an effort to reveal the hidden sexual orientation of clergy members. I certainly think exposing Haggard was a good idea. Applying my thought process on outing political players, I think it's a good thing to expose hypocrisy like this when the clergy are leading the fight against us. I am not sure where I fall in terms of outing clergy who are merely silent on the issue.
A few months after I started this site, Keith Boykin and Jasmyne Cannick wrote about homophobic Black pastors and asked in the blog post if each of them might be gay. It generated controversy at the time. I know that ChurchOuting.org will as well.
