A report on Drudge
The folks at GayPolitics.com can't tell you that Matt Drudge is a closeted gay man. The site is run by the folks at the Victory Fund, so that is completely understandable. I, however, can. What we do learn from the site is that Matt Drudge is anti gay:
Matt Drudge, the influential conservative web news aggregator, has prominently linked to a startlingly anti-American, anti-gay opinion piece in Pravda, a online Russian tabloid that uses the same name as the storied newspaper that served as a propaganda organ of the Central Committee of the Communist party until 1991.Here's how Washington, DC City Councilman David Catania put it in the film, Outrage:
It's very often those self hating gay people who in the closet are the most vicious towards other gays and lesbians as a way to kind of deflect attention from their own orientation. And, yes, Drudge is gay.

A Republican? I am shocked!
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pennsylvania attorney general says a legislative staffer wanted to dress up in a panda costume and have sex with a 15-year-old boy.
Attorney General Tom Corbett says 40-year-old Alan David Berlin, of Carlisle, was charged Thursday with attempted sexual exploitation of children and related crimes.
A Corbett spokesman says the boy's parents alerted authorities after finding graphic messages on his computer. He says agents found wolf- and cat-type costumes in Berlin's home.
A spokesman for Sen. Jane Orie says Berlin has been suspended. Berlin worked in the Senate about a decade, the past several years with the Allegheny County Republican.
Berlin is in the Dauphin County jail. Officials didn't know if he had an attorney.
Does anyone care?
So, the guy gets her into the big oval shaped room and doesn't bother to say, "Sonia, where do you stand on choice?" With a court in a 5-4 balance, you think a smart guy would have been smart enough to ask it. It's not illegal.
Fortunately for the nominee, she's getting support in the most unlikely of places:
Bill Donohue: Will Likely "Quietly Root For" Sotomayor (!): "Conservative Catholic activist Bill Donohue shocked me this morning by saying he will 'quietly root for' the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor. During an email exchange, he wrote:I like the fact that she is not brandishing her religion. I do not want Catholic judges to rule as Catholics but as judges. I am all for Catholic legislators having a Catholic-informed opinion, but a judge has a different charge. Unless something pops that we don't know about, I am not going to oppose her. Indeed, the experiences I had working with the Puerto Rican community lead me to quietly root for her.

Funny...
The Ed Show Video
Marriage, Prop 8 and the Obama Administration's failure to address issues of importance to the LGBT community were on the agenda at The Ed Show last night. I got a few good points in what was a short appearance.
First off was Prop 8 and marriage. I expressed how the issue crosses ideological beliefs and my concerns over Ted Olson. We need to watch him like a hawk. Has Ted Olson seen the light like other past ultra-right wing homophobes Brock and Sully? Or is he a stealth, shrewd manipulator who wants to set us back decades in our struggle for equality (see Goodling. Monica)? I'm hoping for the former. I hope we are prepared for the latter.
We also chatted briefly about the President and the protest he faced last night outside a Beverly Hills hotel. The candidate who always included us in his speeches, doesn't care about us as President. The Harvard Law graduate, the first black editor the Harvard Law Review and a Constitutional law professor and he doesn't have an opinion on whether the right to marriage is covered under the equal protections of our country? Either he is lying or Gibbs is.
Enjoy the clip.

On The Ed Show on MSNBC tonight

I'll be on MSNBC to appear on Ed Schultz's show. It's live it starts at 6pm. I am on during the second half of the hour long show (that can shift). If you are not familiar with Ed, it was on his coast to coast radio show that I first reported on Sen. Larry Craig, a few months shy of a year before he was arrested. Ed is great. His producer James "Holmy" Holmes and Verne, the guy who connects DC to NY to Fargo and makes it all work, are the best.
The marriage story
Someone in the comments lambasted me for ignoring the marriage story, as if it has something to do with outing. My views on the overreaction to a predicted loss in California are known to regular readers of this site. It's a small step back in a march forward in a war the right wing has already lost. Let's stop whining and get to winning. For the long haul of humanity two or four years will not make that much difference in the end.If you are concerned about pushing or equality, check out the Dallas Principles.... I signed onto it and encourage readers to do the same. The Dallas Principles will do as much for gay rights as protesting on the streets. They go hand in hand.
Memo to the GOP
No one knows if Sessions plans to do so -- but when Democrats opposed the nomination of Justice Alito, the Republican declared that judges should face only a 'majority vote' and that filibusters of court nominees were 'very painful.' (emphasis added)

The view... Video...
The discussion was thoughtful and respectful Kirby and I got the major points out there. On TV time flies... Seven minutes feels like two.
The full transcript is here.
I told a fib...
As if folks don't know, I'm on The View today at 11:00 AM ET. When I was in NY on Wednesday to tape, the experience was awesome and sitting at "the" table is one of the experiences I will never forget. When the program shows clips to the TV audience (from the movie, for example) the folks at the table (Elizabeth, Sherry, Joy, Whoopie, Kirby and me) see what you are seeing on a screen right below the camera.
I'm watching the segment and there's Doug McKelway on world wide TV saying "I'd like to take you outside and punch you across the face."
Why the fib? It's a small world and it just so happens that the Chair of the Board of the Ronald Reagan Library is Vice Chairman of Allbritton Communications, the owner of Channel 7 WJLA TV in DC. Since it's an ABC affiliate (obviously the national network is MUCH better than the local) I didn't want to give them a chance to call The View and get the footage yanked from the show.
Hey Doug, you're about to make a complete ass of yourself from coast to coast. What's next? Disneyworld?

Busy day tomorrow
What's really fun is this... I post it at 10:30... he stews for an hour and a half... then has to do his show. This is gonna be sweet.
Then at 11:00 AM, The View is broadcast. If you miss it, I'll the video up here.

The New Gay interview

One of the fastest growing scenes in DC is the "non-scene."
The site, The New Gay, is part of a larger operation that includes social nights, dance nights with hundreds of folks attending. It's a great alternative to the standard "scene."
Mike, one of the bloggers there, spent some time interviewing me. I appreciate this thoroughness and hope you'll stop by to take a look.
You can read the rest of the piece here. Thanks to every one at The New Gay.Though Rogers’ “outing” work continues to provoke controversy both inside and outside the LGBT community, he doesn’t view his activism as a revenge tactic or a personal attack, but as a way to stop anti-gay political figures from pursuing anti-gay policies. Not infrequently, those same figures end up working on the side of gay rights once they no longer have to put up a front to protect their “secret.”

Very sad news...
Rodger was the first Director of Gay Men's Health Crisis, a founder of ACT-UP and Broadway Cares, an author, a Navy veteran, an author and so much more.
Rodger will be missed. He was a friend, a teacher and an inspiration. If you'd like to see a very short clip of Rodger, he is in the trailer for the film Outrage, in which he appears. When I saw that he was in the film I was quite excited. In these sad days, I'll reflect on the past twenty years of knowing Rodger and be grateful that he appeared in such an important film on a topic he supported me so strongly on.
To watch Rodger in the trailer, click here (Rodger is at the 1:30 mark).
Here are some pictures of Rodger...
Rodger appeared on a panel withLarry Kramer, Michelangelo Signorile
and Kirby Dick following a screening of Outrage.

Will it ever end?
In less than five years Schmidt he went from being anti-gay to supporting marriage equality and his views are being echoed by Meghan McCain. Apparently, most of the right wing still don't get it, so now they will try to divide America over the issue of same-sex equality via President Obama's pick for the Supreme Court.
It's EXACTLY for this reason that in 2004 I started this blog. Once again there will be closeted anti-gay politicians lining up to bash the gays. If you know of any, be sure to use the tips email.
Conservatives Plan to Question Obama's Supreme Court Pick on Gay Marriage:
As President Obama prepares to name his first Supreme Court justice, conservatives in Washington are making clear that his nominee will face plenty of questions during the confirmation process on the legal underpinnings of same-sex marriage.

Bringing you up to date on the Doug McKelway campaign
Welcome to new visitors and those who have not been around for a while. This post is an introduction to the situation with Doug McKelway (left), a homophobic TV anchor and talk show host for the Washington, DC ABC affiliate and its all news channel.I appeared on Let's Talk Live to speak about Outrage and from the start it was obvious to me that Doug, the co-host, did not like my work. I expected a spirited debate, but not one like this. He went too far. Watch Doug talk about punching me "across the face." Here is where it all started.
Doug, a journalist, found it perfectly acceptable to invoke violent imagery when arguing a point on gay rights. It certainly is not OK against any other minority group and it's not OK with me.
Here are the rest of the posts in chronological order, earliest first. The next day: McKelway and co-host Natasha Barrett discuss the incident. McKelway refuses to apologize and says, "Come on back on the show Mike, let's talk some more." After being scheduled, I am canceled with no explanation whatsoever. In the clip. Natasha shreds him and calls his type of journalism unprofessional. Watch it here. GO NATASHA!
A tipster shoots me a link online. McKelway was forced to apologize on air fifteen years ago for calling someone a "pansy."
The story becomes more widely known and searching "McKelway" and "Doug McKelway" on the Google shows sites with lots of stories and posts about the controversial. It's also it becomes a front page story at America On Line.
I announce I will be emailing the staff of the station to let them know about McKelway's history of homophobia.A friend on line, sends me this very short parody clip of Doug. It's pretty funny and just 3 seconds long. (Direct audio file here.)
Watching the video on line, I catch something I missed before. Why is the United States Government sponsoring a show with this kind of attack journalism? Now it's time to turn up the heat. I will be educating people via DougMcKelway.com and at a blog, dougmckelway.blogspot.com.
Doug should reconsider his "no apology" missive. And if he does offer one, I'm not accepting crap like "If my words offended you..." He needs to say "It was unprofessional, it was wrong, I am sorry."
The requirements of the apology are simple:
- On-air and written apology as described above.
- An opportunity to be properly interviewed for a similar amount of time by an unbiased reporter who is willing to both challenge me and respect me enough to hear my answers.
Doug's specific insistence on the tight shot was the video equivalent of "getting in someone's face," a gesture that is always meant to intimidate. It is part of a pattern of bias and intimidation. And, if he will not recuse himself, the station is ethically obliged to do it. Even his own co-host accused him of behaving unprofessionally.
Now this is odd...
Why is the United States government's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration sponsoring Doug McKelway's show? I'll be looking into it as well as sharing a report on McKelway's history (over a decade old) of homophobia with the show's advertisers.I asked McKelway for an on air and written apology and he has refused. It would have been a simple way for Doug to put the matter behind him, but, nope, he clearly wants more attention and, well, I'm going to give it to him.
A couple of campaign updates:
1. I'll talk with a representative from the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration this coming week. I will ask why a government agency (particularly one dealing with mental health) would sponsor a program that has a host who invokes violence when talking about gay issues?
2. I have asked folks I know, including one member of Congress, to ask SAMHSA why they are supporting this program.
3. I will begin a public education campaign with my new site -- just purchased tonight, dougmckelway.com. I will be putting up the video clips of Doug saying he'd like to punch me across the face and the video where he refuses to apologize and then lies by saying he wants me back on the show. I'll also post names and numbers of advertisers and ask readers to contact them.
4. I have also started a companion blog: dougmckelway.blogspot.com -- from time to time I'll post stuff there relating to this as well.
5. Check out the Google. When you search on the word "McKelway" the story occupies six of the ten stories on the page, including the TOP TWO! Searching "Doug McKelway" still returns Channel 7 at the top, but my video is right up there and plenty of other info.
Doug may not think he owes me an apology. I have a feeling that with enough pressure, his silence will end and an apology will be forthcoming. Do advertisers on Let's Talk Live really want a public website connecting them to the man who refuses to apologize on air for telling a guest he wants to punch him "across the face?" I'll bet not.
Update: I set the new domain to forward... check it out here: http://www.dougmckelway.com.

Please do not put entries here, put them up at the Outrage Facebook page.
Time to turn up the heat...
So, how can you help? I never watch ABC news in DC. It would help me if readers could send me the name of every on air personality and staff at WJLA. I'll handle converting the names to email addresses and then I'll share them here.

Welcome to Outrage viewers and AOL-ers
I've gotten requests to put up a basic information page and I'll post that tonight. Below I have put some linksof the casess referenced in the film. The most popular email? Where can I hear the original Ed Schrock tapes? Here they are!
Before you venture into the site, I hope you'll consider clicking here to support the work of BlogActive.com. The work of reporting on and exposing anti-gay closeted hypocrites can only continue with readers' support. Thanks!
My original post outing Larry Craig is here, Ed Schrock here, and Dan Gurley here.
Here are the tapes of Schrock (Adults only, please). If your work situation is such that playing sexually explicit tapes of closeted a US Congressmen looking for sex on phone sex lines is a problem, you'll want to pass on these.

AOL exposes McKelway and his onair tirade...
Anchor Loses His Cool With Gay Activist:
An activist devoted to 'outing' closeted gay lawmakers who work against gay rights drew the ire of a news anchor who said he wanted to punch the activist during a TV interview.
Mike Rogers runs the Web site BlogActive, exposing what he calls government hypocrisy by listing the names of politicians and staffers who vote against gay rights issues but may be gay themselves. On May 6, he appeared on 'Let's Talk Live,' a Washington, D.C., show co-hosted by Doug McKelway on News Channel 8.
During the show, McKelway isn't shy about letting Rogers know that he doesn't agree with his tactics. When Rogers accuses the host of implying that being gay is wrong, McKelway tells Rogers he'd like to 'take you outside and punch you across the face.' In a follow-up segment, viewer e-mails and McKelway's own co-host take him to task, but he refuses to apologize.

St. Petersburgh Times names Charlie Crist
As Florida Gov. Charlie Crist considers whether to enter the competitive race to replace Sen. Mel Martinez, some public talk has turned to the issue of his sexuality, thanks to Outrage, an independent film focused on politicians who are accused of hiding their sexual orientation.
During this appearance on an Arlington, Va., cable newschannel, Crist's name surfaced during a conversation on Outrage. The film names Crist among several political figures alleged to be hiding their sexual orientation, using comments from people who claim to be past lovers in addition to other material.
The newschannels' segment featured blogger Mike Rogers, whose blogActive site features similar reports on political figures, and host Doug McKelway in a heated argument that distracts from some key questions which deserve an answer:"

Fifteen years in the making
From 1994. The Washington Post:
Channel 4 news anchor Doug McKelway apologized to viewers yesterday after he used the word 'pansy' on the air while chatting with reporter Jess Atkinson during Atkinson's live report on ice skaters on the Mall ...
'It was extremely inappropriate,' news director Dick Reingold said last night. Immediately following a commercial break, he said, McKelway returned to the air with the apology ...
'We thought it was important to present an apology for the remark as soon as possible,' Reingold said. He said no disciplinary action had been taken against McKelway but 'there will certainly be a follow-up today' ...
The incident occurred during the first half of the 5 p.m. news hour, which...
Time Out NY on the film
Does anyone, infamous or not, deserve to be outed? A tricky question, with the respectful impulse leaning toward discretion. (I must be part of the media conspiracy.) To Dick’s credit, though, he develops a thorough, reasoned argument—via the comments of, among others, BlogActive’s Michael Rogers and Larry Kramer (“Activism is about anger,” the latter says)—that those who harm the LGBT community with prohibitive legislation don’t deserve protection. New Jersey’s former gov Jim McGreevey speaks sincerely about his resignation (so does his bitter ex-wife); Barney Frank is, per usual, a blast of honesty.

Back on Let's Talk Live Monday and those threatening emails
UPDATE: THEY JUST CALLED AND CANCELED. NO REASON. I ASKED WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. THE PRODUCER PROMISED TO GET BACK TO ME IN 20 MINUTES!OUTRAGEOUS!
UPDATE II: NO CALL BACK! CALL ME MR. NOT SURPRISED.
Here's the latest from my appearance:
I went on TV had had a tussle with the co-host of the show, Doug McKelway and he gots LOTS of complaints over how I was treated (see it here.)
He refused, on air, to apologize, Then, at the same time, he invited me back on the show (see it here.)
Then I got a note that said it was not up to Doug and that he would talk to the people who decide such things. Huh? On camera invite that was not an invite at all?
I wrote back:
By looking into the camera and saying you were going to have me back and then tossing it off to others is pretty deceiving and could be interpreted as trying to make me look afraid of challenging you. Can you give me the [telephone] number of the people who make the decision? It did the trick. I got an email a little while ago:
OK, Just talked to our news director. And he suggests the best time to have you back on is this coming Monday. Today's show is totally booked with guests. In addition to having to cancel people who’ve arranged the schedules around our show today, you and I would be cut short time wise. Monday , on the other hand, affords us more time to make good points in a less frenetic atmosphere. I hope you’ll do it.I've been a scheduled guest on a TV show who got bumped. It really sucks. I imagine more so for the people who appear on a show like Let's Talk Live, which focuses on local issues with folks who have but rare opportunity to appear on television. I don't want to be "that guy who bumped me."
Now, as for the notes people have written to McKelway. LET ME BE CLEAR. In no uncertain terms, I condemn ANY threats (serious or not) emailed Doug (or anyone else with whom we disagree). Even if folks with whom we disagree invoke violence or threats of violence (itself an assault under the law), we must resist similar activities.
Now some words on such threats:
It's my believe that the vast majority of threats are placed by conservatives to make gays look like like lunatics. I have yet to see any form of violence erupt, EVER, at a gay pride event or ANY gay event for that matter. The language in those emails is eerily similar to the very tactics called for on mainstream conservative websites like Free Republic.
Doug expressed to me a concern about attending because of the threats. And frankly, I believe him. Sure, such treats are never acted on, yet if I was a newscaster and someone threatened -- seriously or not -- to toss a brick at me, I'd do the same thing. (One's face is an important thing in his business.)
If threats of violence are made, I hope the station captures the IP address and investigates. I've been threatened before and I submit the information over to the proper authorities and seriously encourage them to do that. (It's like a bomb threat. It's the threat that causes panic and fear -- So. Not. Cool.)
If you're writing to the station, please acknowledge it with a POSITIVE comment.

Los Angeles Times names names...
Kirby Dick's 'Outrage' comes at pivotal moment in gay rights fight:
All the law and policymakers identified have previously been 'outed' in print or online, but most either deny being gay or simply decline to comment on privacy grounds. Among those named in 'Outrage' are veteran California Rep. David Dreier, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, ex-Louisiana Congressman Jim McCrery, former New York City Mayor Ed Koch and ex-Idaho Sen. Larry Craig, whose notorious 2007 arrest on suspicion of lewd conduct in a Minneapolis airport men's room effectively ended his political career."
The New York Times names names in Outrage review!
Much of “Outrage” consists of interviews with journalists and activists who reflect on that history, including Andrew Sullivan, the blogger and author; Representative Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Democrat; and Larry Kramer, the novelist and playwright who was a founder of Act Up. Their reflections are interwoven with allegations about the sex lives of several well-known current political figures, including Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida, Representative David Dreier of California and Larry E. Craig, the former Idaho senator whose arrest on a charge of soliciting sex in a Minnesota airport bathroom provides Mr. Dick with his most complete case study.
(In a somewhat manipulative passage he juxtaposes Mr. Craig’s denials of homosexuality with reflections by James E. McGreevey, the former New Jersey governor, on the psychic and spiritual costs of such denial. Mr. McGreevey is talking about himself, but the editing makes it seem as if he also has Mr. Craig in mind.)
The central claim of “Outrage” — advanced most ardently by Michael Rogers, a blogger who sees it as his mission to name names and reveal secrets — is that politicians who vote against gay interests while surreptitiously pursuing gay sex deserve exposure. There was a time when this position seemed much more radical than it does now, and I suspect that “Outrage” might create less of a furor than it would have a few years ago.
OH MY GOODNESS

Raw Story » GOP governor eyeing Senate run to be outed in film tomorrow
The Republican governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, who is strongly considering a run for Senate, will be outed in a independent film being released tomorrow.
The film, “Outrage,” tracks the outings of prominent gay political figures, such as Crist and former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman. It’s being produced by Magnolia Pictures and will appear in Landmark Theaters across the country.
“Using some firsthand accounts of former sexual partners, old campaign footage (to occasionally humorous effect) and commentary from gay political media watchdogs, the film makes the case for each man’s homosexuality, and presents his lifetime gay rights voting record,” according to one reviewer. “In each instance, the disconnect is staggering.
Anyone have a face mask?
Oy. This guy. Let's just say he clearly has some very strong (V-E-R-Y strong) personal feelings on this issue. At one point I thought of saying to him, "relax girlfriend, oh I just love your bright pink pink tie." (It's LEVITY people)It's at that 2:45 mark that he expresses that he'd like to take me outside and punch me in the face.
As I write this, I'm on the phone with my cousin, star of an NYC amateur hockey league team. Maybe I should ask him to send me some hockey gear to protect myself from this guy's attack.
This movie and the work around it has taken two years. As always, it's the generosity of BlogActive readers that keep this work going. If you're able to help, here's a link.
NPR covers Outrage
In his new film Outrage, Academy Award-nominated director Kirby Dick (This Film Is Not Yet Rated) turns his camera on some of the nation's most powerful policymakers — politicians, in both legislatures and executive suites, who live what some say are closeted gay lives while chalking up what activists describe as deplorably anti-gay voting records.NPR interviews Kirby Dick: In The Political Closet, Dark Shadows
You can hear the interview with Kirby here. It includes some audio clips from the movie, including one in which I talk about my work. Dan Gurley is also interviewed. Dan is a former bigwig with the RNC who was tossed by homophobic party leaders when I reported on his hyprocrisy. He now works for North Carolina's statewide LGBT rights organization.
